Today I have a huge treat for you!  Amy from One Artsy Mama is here to share a craft with you.  If I am a wannabe crafty mom, Amy is a for real crafty mom, and I'm so happy she's here!  Thanks Amy for sharing!

Be sure to head over to Amy's blog, see all the amazing things she has to create, and check out the recipe I'm sharing with her readers today.

Hi, Lisa's friends and followers!  I'm Amy, aka One Artsy Mama, and I'm thrilled to be here today to share a quick and easy jewelry tutorial with you!  Lisa and I were joking recently about how different our specialties are; she's the chef and I'm the crafter.  So, we thought it might be fun to switch things up for our readers today by guest posting for each other and giving you all a little change-up!  She's over at my blog sharing a yummy recipe, and I get to share with you one of my favorite jewelry projects; my Sheet Music Ring!

Let me start by saying I am a total sucker for statement jewelry, I'm a musician {piano, voice, and a big of guitar}, and I'm crazy about all kinds of Mod Podge.  So, I came up with this project, which combines all three:

DIMENSIONAL MAGIC SHEET MUSIC RING

Materials:

sheet music or your choice of decorative paper

ring base {available for $3.99 at Michaels}

Mod Podge Dimensional Magic

scissors, pencil

STEP 1: Choose your decorative paper or sheet music.  I actually downloaded mine for free.  You can use basically anything, but if you want lots of little notes and both clefs, you should look for classical music designed for piano.  Since I started playing the piano at the age of 3, music is very meaningful to me and I wanted to choose something that I had a connection with rather than a random piece.  I selected my very favorite classical piece to play, Chopin's Waltz in F minor, Op. 70, No.2.  I learned it in college under the instruction of an amazingly talented professor and I just love the sound of it.  If music isn't your thing, you can opt instead to use a map, a dictionary definition, or some pretty scrapbook paper.

STEP 2: Use a scrap piece of paper to trace and cut out the correct size and shape to fit your jewelry base.  Then, trace that onto another piece of paper and cut it out as a "window."

STEP 3: Trace the window onto your sheet music or scrapbook paper.  This allows you to see just what will be in the oval, rather than trying to guess and ending up with something you didn't want.

STEP 4: Cut out and use a thin coat of regular Mod Podge to adhere it in the ring base.

STEP 5: Fill base with a thin coat of Dimensional Magic and let dry for at least 3 hours.

If you see any bubbles, pop them with a pin, a thin piece of wire, or your finger if you can.  I do mean a thin coat, by the way.  If you go too thick, it will take forever to dry and may be cloudy.

At this point, I realized that it was going to be tricky finding a way to sit the ring down and let it dry while remaining flat...here's what I came up with. ;)

Once it's dry, it's ready to enjoy!

Because it was just thin regular computer paper, when the Mod Podge made it wet, it picked up some of the pattern from the back of the ring itself...see the gray dots?  But you know what?  I love that!  I think it adds texture and some antique-ness to it.  I chose not to tea stain the music because I didn't want the yellowed look, but I really like the effect this gave.  If you want the yellowed look, you can brush a coat of Antique Mod Podge on before you add the Dimensional Magic.  Of course, you could always add glitter too!

I. love. it.  These are so simple to make, really inexpensive, and you can make them totally personal depending on what you choose to use.  And the best part is, you need absolutely no jewelry making skills to do it!  What do you think?  Here's a peek at how you could do the same technique with a dictionary definition...

Thanks for letting me stop by and share with you today, and thanks to Lisa for sharing a recipe with my readers too!  Hope you all enjoyed the post; I'd love for you to come visit over at One Artsy Mama sometime and check out my other tutorials for jewelry, kids' crafts, holiday ideas, crochet, sewing projects, paint and home decor projects, and more!
