The Mingo County Commission regular session Tuesday, February 16, 2016 4:30 p.m. room 136 first floor, Mingo County Courthouse.

The Matewan Utility Board and Council meetings will be Feb. 16, at 5:00 and 6:00 p.m.

February 17

The next regular Stop Coalition meeting will be Wednesday, February 17 at 12 p.m. at the Mingo County Board of Education’s first-floor conference room. Lunch will be provided and everyone’s invited to attend. This was postponed from last week.

The Mingo County Redevelopment Authority board meeting will be conducted Wednesday, February 17th, at their office in East Williamson at 3:30 p.m.

February 18

Stone Heritage will hold its regular monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room of Appalachian First Response. Everyone is welcome to attend.

February 20-21

The “Lights Out” 3rd grade double-elimination Buddy League basketball tournament will be held at the old Lenore Gym. The dates are February 20-21. For more info call 304-784-4520 or 304-475-3170.

The Williamson Branch NAACP and SWVCTC will present the annual Black History Month/ Candlelight Vigil Program at the Logan Street First Baptist Church, in Williamson at 3 p.m. Guest speaker will be Mr. Owens L. Brown of Wheeling W.Va. who is the newly elected President of the West Virginia State Conference of NAACP Branches.

February 23

There will be a Small Business Development Summit on February 23rd at 10:00 am at the UMWA Union Hall in Matewan. This will be especially beneficial to tourism and Hatfield McCoy Trail related businesses (potential businesses, too. For more information you can contact the Mingo County Redevelopment Authority at 304-235-0042. You’ll need to RSVP to them as well.

February 27th

The 3rd annual Cause for Paws event will be held by the Tug Valley Road Runners Club. All proceeds will benefit Save Our Strays, Mingo County’s only official not-for-profit no-kill animal rescue group. The race will take place at the Williamson Fieldhouse in West Williamson with an 11 am start, while registration is from 9:00 am till 10:45 pm.

February 29

The regular board meeting of the Housing Authority of Mingo County Board of Commissioners will be held on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 12:00 noon. It will be held in the office at 5026 Helena Avenue, Delbarton, West Virginia.

September 16, 17, 18

The Chattaroy High School Reunion will be held September 16, 17, 18 this year.

September 23, 24, 24

The All-Class Williamson High School reunion will be held September 23 to 25.

Recurring Events:

Mingo Extended Learning Center is offering a Microsoft Word/Excel class to prepare for Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification. The class will meet for four hours on Tuesday evenings at 4:30 (or class consensus) beginning January 19 and ending on May 31. The cost of the class is $400 ($200 due the first night, then $100 due March 1 and the final $100 due April 1); which includes the cost of two textbooks and both certification exams. Registration for Spring classes at the Mingo Adult Learning Center has begun. If you have considered earning your high school equivalency diploma (GED), preparing to enter college or a training program, or just brushing up on math, reading, or other skills, it’s a great time to sign up. Located on the Williamson SWVCTC campus, the Center is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Instruction and materials are offered free of charge. The Pike County Recycling Bin which was located at the Food City at South Williamson is now located at Black Gem Park in 85 Black-Gem Road, Belfry. All residents are encouraged to recycle for the benefit and beauty of our natural environment.

Alcoholics Anonymous – St. Paul Episcopal Church has AA meetings Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The church is located at 5th Ave. and Prichard St. in Williamson.

A Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting will be held on Friday evening, at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Pauls Episcopal Church on Prichard Street in Williamson. The meeting will be held in the basement section of the church.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meets Saturday’s at the Jacob’s Well in the old Cantees’ location on 3rd Ave. in Williamson. For more info call 304-235-6029.

The Tug Valley Shrine Club meets the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. on the 4th floor of the Cinderella Thearter Building in Williamson.

The UMWA Local 1440 meets at 10 a.m. the first Saturday of the month at the UMWA Union Hall in Matewan, W.Va.

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Chapter 141 in Belfry, Ky. will be holding their monthly meeting the third Saturday of each month at 2 p.m. in the Belfry Courthouse.

Commander Fred Baldwin is inviting all interested parties as DAV is always looking for new members.

A Food Pantry will be available at the Matthew 28:19 Ministries Church located Parkway Drive in West Williamson on the second Saturday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The pantry is for those in need.

House of Hope Food Pantry gives out USDA food the fourth Monday of each month. USDA food is given out regardless of income.

The Parsley Bottom Freewill Baptist Food Pantry will continue to provide USDA commodities. The pantry gives out the food once monthly on the fourth Thursday.

Operation Charity food pantry will distribute free USDA food from 12 noon to 2 p.m. the last Friday of each month at the New Vision Assembly Church in Hatfield Bottom.

The Delbarton VFW Post 8001 encourages VFW veterans to join the local post. Meetings are held on the first and third Monday of each month at 6 p.m., in the VFW building located behind the barber shop in Delbarton. For more information call Ron Dempsey at 304-475-4566.

The Mingo County Wellness Committee will conduct quarterly meetings at the Board Office in Williamson. If you would like to join the county wellness committee, please contact the Child Nutrition Office at 304-235-7142. The purpose of the committee is to address the wellness needs of students and the school environment by working collaboratively with community agencies toward addressing identified needs. Each school also has a wellness committee. If you would like to participate in the school wellness committee, please contact your school.

The Pike County Airport Board will hold two regular meetings each month at the following times and locations – First Thursday, Pike County Airport at 5 p.m. – Third Thursday at the East Ky. Expo Center at 12 noon.
