What computers can and can't do
Computers are clever
:
they remember
a
lot and think quickly
.
They can help us
to
send people into space, but they
can't
translate correctly. Even today
,
most
translations are
still done by humans, who use computers
to help
do word processing and search through
a
dictionary and thesaurus. Although
translation
programmes can be very helpful with the translation of the texts
,
the machine translated sentences are very unnatural and they
have to
be changed manually
.

Traduco il testo utilizzando dei tools trovati sul web. Poi però bisogna cambiare il risultato in alcune parti. Ritraduco il testo nella lingua nella lingua di partenza, questo processo mi aiuterà
a
capire dove il traduttore ha sbalgiato
.
Then I am trying
to
guess whether the translation is right or not. If I
can't
guess
,
I Google the result and see how many people using the phrase that I have my doubts about. As you can see a lot of
translations
on this wiki
are
wrong. I need you
to help
me to make
a
good
translation
!

Do you do it any other way? Please tell me your way!

+

+

It helps if you know both languages! If you don't know them
,
then you
have to
use dictionaries and ask the educated native speakers about the correct translation
.
Most of all you need to learn this language! I need to learn many languages!

Translate the word "frustration" into Russian and then back into English
When I did it at first with Microsoft Word,
frustration
became

разочерование

and then it became

disappointment

Some on
-
line dictionaries, such as
Google Translate
, give a few words for
frustration
. They even try to explain the meaning.

frustration
▹ разочарование ▹ disappointment

Microsoft has a very good reason not to translate this word at all. There was no word for frustration in Russian when I was growing up there, but maybe Worldlingo is right, maybe a few people know this word now. Good news,
better than a computer! You have got your senses, your feelings and mind: use them
, but be
warned, in Russian your thoughts and feelings may turn out to be different!

+

разочарованиеdisappointment, frustration, disillusionment, disenchantment, disillusion, letdown

+

расстройствоdisorder, upset, frustration, disturbance, derangement, disruption

Today I have translated
the
word with Google, it gave me "фрустрация". Ура!

I tried to explain the feeling of frustration to my Russian friends for half an hour but all in vain. There was a full bottle of vodka and an empty glass on the table in front of us. So I asked my friend’s husband to empty the whole bottle into the small glass. He told me that he was not able to do it: the glass was too little. I explained to him that it was not the point. The point was that he must want to empty the bottle into the glass; then
,
the mere fact that he was not able to do this, will give him that feeling of frustration. All of my friends were amazed. They told me that they could not even begin to start "thinking in this English way".

Wikipedia provides us with a very interesting article on wikipedia:en:Machine translation.

The Pentagon claimed that they had succeeded in designing a translation program. They invited Richard Nixon, to give it a try. His wife phoned while he was there and he used the phrase "Out of sight, out of mind" as a test phrase to translate into Russian, and then the result was translated back into English. The result was "Invisible maniac." I am not sure that the story is completely true, but that is what I heard.

How do you translate?
+

Boris Bulgakov: I use the Google translator but only to control myself. For example, usually I type in English in the left window and control the translation in the right window. At least, in this case I see the misprints and some mistakes. After that I just do copy - paste. Besides, I use a very good dictionary online - Multitran.

+

Natasha Brown: I translate the text using an online tool. Then I change the result a bit. Then I translate the text back into the language that I have just translated from. This process shows where the translation tool is wrong. Then I am trying to guess whether the translation is right or not. If I can't guess, I Google the result and see how many people are using the phrase that I have my doubts about. Please tell me your way! --

Traduco il testo utilizzando dei tools trovati sul web. Poi però bisogna cambiare il risultato in alcune parti. Ritraduco il testo nella lingua nella lingua di partenza, questo processo mi aiuterà a capire dove il traduttore ha sbalgiato.
