The course design was informed by a ''pedagogy of discovery'' whereby learners sourced OER and open access materials in pursuit of their own learning interests combined with the integration of online digital literacies. The [[AST1000|course materials]] were developed and hosted on WikiEducator which enabled easy integration into the Moodle learning management system which was used for administering course registrations and course announcements. (The AST1000 prototype pre-dated a wiki-based registration and course announcement solution.)  An online facilitator at the University of Southern Queensland posted course announcements at appropriate times during the course. The University of Southern Queensland established an online payment gateway for cost recovery for the three summative assignments (AU$50, AU$50 and
