The Alaska Railroad, a Class II Railroad owned by the (People of the) state of Alaska, is the state's primary rail transportation corridor, operating on 611 total miles of track, including 466 miles of main line. Not entered into {{Tag|route|railway}} tables below are minor spurs serving ocean docks/harbor terminals plus a yard at Anchorage, minor spurs plus a yard in Fairbanks, a short spur crossing the Nenana River at Healy, numerous other sidings and short spurs and about 9 miles of {{Tag|railway|abandoned}} to a quarry near Fox.

While The Alaska Railroad does not connect by land to Canada or the USA's lower 48 states, Alaska Rail-Marine Service moves freight railcars between Seward and Seattle on weekly barges. Also at Seward is railcar freight service with Canadian National Aquatrain.
