Middle Ages Clothing

Clothing played a very significant role in life of the Middle Ages as it does today. It was a way to establish your class, your power and the role you played in society. Styles of clothing were influenced by many factors such as wealth and foreign influence. Laws and church enforcement were one of the many factors that pushed a change in fashions. Middle Ages fashion changed in several ways over time, but was always very unique. Clothes were lavish and extravagant, nothing like what we know today as fashion. Clothing was important in times like the Black Death; it allowed people to express their feelings of sorrow. There were several amounts of causes that made fashion what it was in the Middle Ages.

There were many aspects that influenced how people dressed, and believe it or not, the church was a very significant influence. Men were the first to change their appearances and this upset the church. The church believed people who spent a lot of time on their appearance were vain. Those who were fashion conscious and lavishly dressed were said to have a guaranteed place in hell. People were so involved in keeping up with the latest trends that they began to spend more time staying informed that they forget their allegiance to the church. Not all faith was lost, but some of their values began to fade away. The church did not agree with the latest trends and thought people had better things to do with their time, such as worship more often. To assert their power, the church decided that all women must wear a modesty veil at all times. At first women were outraged, but they later found ways to make them stylish and suit their fashion needs. More veil styles were invented, lavish decorations were added and the women's headdress became a major trend. But the struggle continued with the church trying to control fashions trends. As the styles became more outrageous, the church tried their hardest to implement regulations, but people refused to listen. Finally when they got through to people, a new trend would appear, even more outrageous, continuing the struggShown here is the typical dress of the church leaders. As the desire to dress well became more and more common, the church had to constantly remind people of their virtue and humility.

As much as fashion may have changed for all walks of people, the church dress has never changed significantly. The dress of the church leaders developed from the Roman Empire religious dress and it has stayed similar through most of time. Their clothing was very distinctive and it always covered them up thoroughly. Priests wore layers of clothing called vestments. It started with an alb, a belt white tunic, then a dalmatic which was a long, unbelted surcoat then it was finally topped with a long, ornate cape called a chasuble. The Bishops and Archbishops wore the same outfit as a Priest as well as large triangular hats called mitres accompanied by a hooked walking stick in hand known as the crosier. All of the many layers worn by the Pope were of red and white shades. The outfit was topped with an elaborate headdress. Monks and Nuns wore very simple clothes made of low quality material. Their dress resembled their purity and commitment to their type of lifestyle. Since dressing well became so important to all classes of people, laws were made that tried to stop people from spending too much money on their clothes. It was also necessary to dress within your social class to keep society balanced. The laws were so restricting that people who failed to obey and listen to them were sometimes punished for ignoring. Some laws were enforced to restrict specific styles, such as the enormous sleeve. People were so in love with the style though they refused to listen. It rarely happened for a fashion law to have a full affect on people's decisions, but on the occasions that it did and the style was banned, another door of opportunity opened. A style being banned acted as a passed trend, once it faded something newer and even better became stylish.

The fight for power and fashion continued for years and years. It may never have reached its peak and importance in people's lives.

This picture depicts a noble women dressed in clothes of mourning.

People often dressed to represent how they felt or to support something, a trend that continues into our present day. However, in the Middle Ages you had to be highly involved with fashion to understand the meanings behind the clothes. For example, nobles who wanted to support a duke, a king or a queen would attempt to wear a colour that they commonly wore. At tournaments the nobles would wear the colours of the knight they were cheering for, as today we wear our team colours. As decorations and embroidery became more involved with clothing, people would decorate certain accessories in such ways to represent feelings. For example, there was once a man who was sad so he wore a hat that was covered in embroidered teardrops. The most common show of feeling through dress was mourning. The colours designated to mourning were black, white, red and purple but most common black and white. During the time of the Black Death, most people forgot about the latest trends and committed to wearing black and white during the time of sorrow. The clothing was plain and dull. It represented the pain that was in the air and the hearts of all the people who had lost their beloved ones. Some people who had lost loved ones left behind the trends and dressed as if they were in mourning all the time. One more way clothing had a voice was in the way that it showed changes in time. Clothes went from being simple and plain to eloborate and fancy as people of the time grew and gained a better knowledge about the world. As the people and times changed and evolved, the clothes they wore represented these changes. Clothes became more complicated which shows how time were becoming more complicated. Dressing to represent feeling was a newer concept in the time that never really became popular, but there was still always a unique twist to every person's style.

This is a portrait of Beatrice d'Este. The two most well know fashion icons of the time were Isabella and Beatrice d'Este. They were sisters who lived in Italy, which was a country known for its influence in fashion and clothing. The d'Este sisters were known as 'fashion inventors'. They lived apart and were both married to noble men. They always kept in touch by writing letters to one another. Their letters would always include all of the new ideas they had thought of for clothing. The styles they created were very unique, such as using chain as a decorative belt on an outfit. As soon as one of their trends gained a following,Air Jordan 9 Retro Original Black, they would make sure to invent a new one, always staying ahead in fashion. Being the greatest fashion innovators of the Middle Ages, they would do anything to keep up their reputation. The d'Este sisters would give or do anything to be fashionable. Several times, they had gone into small debts just to keep up with their magnificent fashion ideas. Isabella and Beatrice were the start of many uprising fashion inventors. Clothing was their passion and they never failed not to live up to their reputations of being the most innovative people in fashion.

The Feudal system and social pyramid was such a significant part of Middle Ages people's lifestyles. Clothing was the way one would judge, how they could place you. Social classes had a huge effect on the way people dressed,Cheap Luxury Handbags. There were some very significant factors that separated the classes such as cost and jobs. Most importantly, clothing and appearance was the way one could establish a person in a class just by glancing at them.

Starting at the top of the pyramid, ruling classes wore lavish highly decorated clothing that often had strands of gold hand woven into the silk. However, in earlier times the ruling classes were known to wear rough garments such as furs and leather. Byzantine influence pushed the ruling classes towards wearing fancier garments which was a wise choice because it gave the rulers a much more elegant appearance. One aspect in the ruling classes clothing that separated them from other classes is that they had Chamberlain's. Also known as Esquires of the Body, they were a team of people that consisted of about 7-10 people that were devoted to dressing the King or Queen. It was their duty to ensure that all clothes were clean and the ruler approved of them. It was also their job to dress the ruler every day, undress as well. They had to make sure the King or Queen was comfortable while being dressed, such has having a sofa prepared to be sat on placed by a fireplace. They would dress the ruler head to toe, layer by layer which was a luxury only available to the ruling class. A main colour that was exclusive to ruling classes was purple, as it is an ancient royal colour. For people of royalty, their clothing represented their high power. Lavish jewelry resembled that they did not have to work. Another aspect royals liked to incorporate into their clothes was to increase the space their body occupied by wearing heals, adding padding to clothes. Most commonly, the farthingale, a large hoop made of metal or wood, was used to increase the area a women's skirt would occupy. The ruling classes were always extravagantly dressed people and were generally the people to start the latest trends.

Working down the pyramid, the nobles of the Middle Ages were also very established in the ring of fashion. For nobles, clothing was their way to symbolize their power and importance in society. Similar to royalty, very wealthy nobles often had a few servants devoted to their clothing that would help dress them as well. They also wore high quality materials. High quality materials were much softer compared to the quality of the lower classes. Wealthy noble families were known to have contacts within a circle of people as their resources for the latest materials and best tailors. An aspect that separated noble clothing from the lower class was that theirs was always made by tailors. They would buy the material and have the tailor design and make the clothing for them. Tailors were generally dressed in the same way as nobles because they had knowledge of fashion and were quite wealthy because the nobles would always want new clothes. The wealthy would wear fine silks woven in Italy and Spain that were then imported by Eastern Traders. Dressing out of your class was forbidden so they would do their best to set standards so high and unattainable, no lower class person would be crazy enough to spend that much money on clothing. However, striving to keep the balance throughout the classes caused problems for the nobles. As time went on, trends started to change more rapidly and the upper class had to maintain their reputation of being the most fashionable. Money would be spent and wasted as a style was forgotten. On some occasions, people often declined event invitations because they could not afford new clothes to fit in with other guests. Nobles believed that if they were well dressed, they would earn respect. Another way for nobles to show their wealth and importance was by wearing lots of jewelry on their body and decorations on their clothes. When it came to upper class women, the main aspect that separated their appearance from lower class women's appearance was the decorations on their clothes and their jewelry. Besides that, most of their styles were the same. One very significant aspect that separate clothing classes was colour. The wealthier were available to a wider variety of colour choices as colour was expensive. Similar to royalty, nobles would pad their clothes, use farthingales, wear tall headdresses, anything that would increase the space they occupied to help show off their class. Always striving to be up to date, dressing to show they didn't have to work, making sacrifices to be fashionable, the nobles may have been some of the most influential people of Middle Ages clothing.

Depicted here is the typical working peasant wearing simple clothing. Their tights were sometimes shorter to accomodate their work.

Continuing down the social pyramid, the working class had a very different style of clothing compared to the higher classes. People who had more physical jobs were more concerned with wearing clothes to accommodate their jobs. Mostly peasants who worked in farming fields had these concerns and it shows in their style. They wore plain blouses and tunics made of rough materials. They would make their own clothes from linen, wool, goat skin, sheep, and wolf then sometimes trim it with fox, otter and rabbit fur. The most significant aspect to their clothes was the length. Having long flowing clothes that covered your body was the fashion, but peasants needed to wear short tunics so they could bend down to work in the fields. Peasants were also told by the higher classes to have short hair and wear simple gray clothes. Colour was not available to the peasant class, but they didn't need it because their clothes were usually dirty from a hard day's work. Dressing in your class could not be stressed enough. If a peasant tried to dress fancier and spent their savings just to have a nice outfit, if caught dressing out of their class they would be punished. The general punishment would be a public humiliation. The peasants lived a hard life, and it showed in their dress. Living in the high fashion shadows, peasants strived to present themselves better, but were never successful.

Overall, within the Feudal system social classes, the way you dressed was the tag you wore to label your class. Staying in your place was extremely important and could lead to harsh consequences if disobeyed. From imported,Jordan 11 Low White Cobalt, hand woven silks, to sheep skin tunics, there was a place for everyone in Middle Ages fashion.

Of all the aspects that influenced clothing, trade really had to be one of the most significant ones. It was the 1400's when the textile industry prospered. As towns grew in size and wealth, specialized shops appeared. These shops were run by weavers along with tailors, and other textile crafts workers. Dunring the early Middle Ages people made clothes as they did for hundreds of years. They used natural resources and spun thread into cloth to make clothes. Trading changed all of this. As opposed to making their own clothes, people who could afford it took their fabrics to tailors to be made as they had an advanced knowledge of fashion as well as merchants because they were always traveling. As crafts workers became more skilled, better quality clothing was made. Within a crafts worker guild, there were people specialized to making one type of fashion, for example a shoe maker made strictly shoes. They began to cut,Hogan Interactive Shoes, fit, and decorate clothing more elaborately. Tailors were very proud of their skills so they took advantage of their skills to make some of the most outrageous clothing. However, tailors were generally male because most women made their dresses at home. Merchant guilds that imported and finished cloth became very wealthy and powerful. In fact, some of the greatest most successful merchant guilds of the Middle Ages were clothing orientated. As established in society as the crafts workers were, they would still try to cheat customers. They would sometimes sell their goods in dark areas to hide the quality of the fabrics. In the end though, they never failed to satisfy the people with the latest trends.

There was a common route merchants traveled to gather materials. Ideas and styles could only travel as fast as the people could, therefore styles varied in different areas. Men traveled more so their dress was similar throughout countries whereas women's clothing was considered fashionable in their cities. It was the merchants who traveled the distances to spread and share fashions. Trading routes caused Venice to be influenced by Germany and other Eastern countries such as Milan and France. Germany was known to have many merchants that traded overseas whom brought back many desired materials. Germany though was mainly made up of small, separated towns. Countries that exported materials became rich because there was such a high demand for cloth as the styles were always changing. However, some countries did not have the luxury of high quality materials, therefore they had to import. Italy for example had poor quality wool and in the 1360's England started weaving wool exporting it to countries such as Italy which caused England to become very wealthy. In the 1100's Italy started importing silks from the Middle East, but they later began to produce silks that they then exported. In fact, Italy became known for the fine silks they exported along with the Chinese silk they exported. There were setbacks for importing countries though. Countries that imported goods had to be cautious and keep demands for materials low as to not become poor. Other countries though relied on the trade to stay wealthy and continue producing. If countries stopped importing, then the exporting countries would become poor as well.

Overall, trade really did have a large influence on Middle Ages fashions. Merchants were the people who spread the fashions, kind of how fashion magazines inform people today. Importing and exporting of materials allowed people to experience fashion from outside of Europe. If it weren't for the traveling merchants, Middle Ages clothing would not have become as diverse as it was.

How did fashion/clothing change over the Middle Ages and what caused these changes?

Middle Ages clothing definitely changed drastically over the time. Clothing showed development in time and people. It started out simple, loose and handmade and turned into elaborate, extremely fitted and tailored. Everyone wore an under layer of clothing and if you could afford too, you would layer more clothes upon that layer,Jordan 10 Sacramento Kings. Women were always expected to have a head cover of some sort. If you look at clothing from the start of the Middle Ages then at the end, there is a significant difference. There were reasons for these changes however. Some of the changes had positive effects, but there were also negative effects. As the people of the time evolved, what they wore did as well.

During the Early Middle Ages, men and women both wore shapeless, loose fitting clothing. It was mainly a simple tunic with a belt throughout all classes of people. Fitted clothes later replaced these loose clothes. The women's tunic started to turn into a long dress for those who could afford the materials. There would also be laces to fit the dress to the upper body. Men wore loose tights underneath tunics called breeches. Breeches could be loose or other known variations were wrapped cloth around the legs to make stockings. During these early times, men and women had similar clothing worn in variations.

Some variations of the wimple.1100, the first changes in clothing were recorded with men, which caused upraise of anger within the church. Starting in the 1100's through the 1200's, women started to wear head covering pieces called wimples. They were large veils that covered all the way down to throat. Men also wore hoods called liripipes. Influenced by Crusader wear, men and women started to wear outer tunics called surcoats that covered the entire body, cheap dr dre beats. It was during this time that women covering up more than men became a significant factor. Men generally had sleeveless clothing whereas women had long sleeves.

Moving into the 1300's when upper class clothing became really fancy; accessories also became popular among the upper class. Buttons were used for decorations and there were countless types of buttons. Decorative edgings called dagging were added to trim clothes. Men and women still continued to share some styles of clothing such as the cote-hardie. It was a simple, long jacket worn with a jeweled belt for
