Epic has announced they’ve got several projects currently in the works for the Unreal Engine 4. However, none of these development projects include a new Unreal Tournament. This is an unfortunate announcement for fans of the fast-paced, old-school arena shooter.
Epic Games made the announcement during their GDC 2014 panel. Epic boss Tim Sweeney, as reported by CVG, said:
We’re not [planning on] shipping an Unreal Tournament game.
We have a lot of nostalgia for the game, but we’re actually not developing anything in the Unreal game universe at all at the moment.
However, Epic is currently working on a few new games that utilize the Unreal Engine 4. We’ve seen one of these in action already. The previously announced Fortnite looks to be a huge hit when it releases. Sweeney continued:
We’ve announced Fortnite… That’s a game we’ll be talking about later.
Sweeney did crush any GDC announcement dreams while speaking at the panel, saying:
We don’t have anything to show you here at GDC.
There are several other projects that aren’t announced yet that are being developed with Unreal Engine 4
The big announcement from Epic is the licensing model for Unreal Engine 4, which allows developers to subscribe for just $19 a month.
Are there any Epic games you would like to see? Or, perhaps, just some new IP? A new Unreal Tournament would have been incredible.
