This week, Killzone: Shadow Fall launches alongside the PlayStation 4, a game which is bound to look fantastic and play excellently. As a huge fan of Killzone and FPS myself, it made me look back to this last generation of games and the plethora of amazing FPS titles that have launched. As such, I decided to make this quick list to recommend some amazing looking FPS that you can pick up now to get some of that visual magic before the PS4 launches this week. The ranking isn’t done as a comparison of the merit or worth of the games but rather a way of listing amazing looking game series that are both fun to play and are a visual treat.

5. Halo

Ever since its launch on the original Xbox, the Halo series has consistently provided astounding visuals and phenomenal locations in a fictional sci-fi universe. Massive alien ships, large-scale air battles and even intense tank vs tank combat, Halo always delivers with visual flair on top of solid gameplay. The Halo series is exclusive to Xbox, with Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 on the original Xbox and Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo Wars, Halo Reach and Halo 4 all being on the Xbox 360. Each of these titles are classics that can easily be picked up for a cheap price and you can soon pick up the Halo 4: Game of the Year Edition. At E3, a Halo game was announced for the Xbox One but no further news was given, hopefully we can expect more details in the future. If you’re ready to jump into the shoes of Master Chief and many other Spartan and human heroes in the Halo universe, then you can start now.

4. Call of Duty

Whether it’s seeing the tanker sink into a dark, deep-sea in COD4 or watching as a satellite weapon delivers destruction to the earth in the recent Call of Duty: Ghosts, the Call of Duty series has its fair share of over-the-top set pieces and unforgettable moments. A large legacy and an even larger fanbase is the huge chip on the COD series’ shoulder, consistently attempting to deliver an experience that tops the last, running on all platforms at solid 60 frames per second. The series is renowned for maintaining this graphical fidelity in its other modes, especially its multiplayer mode which the series has become famous for. To find out more about the most recent game, you can check out our review of Call of Duty; Ghosts, a game which is available now for current gen and soon for next-gen platforms.

3. Battlefield

Whilst already being a moderately good-looking series, developer DICE upped the scale by utilizing the Frostbite 3 engine to turn their last two games, Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4, into stunning pieces of visual feats. An experience best played on PC, the recent two Battlefield games deliver a visual experience that must be seen to be believed, with vehicles and infantry going at it at a large-scale in Battlefield 3 to intense destruction and map changing events in Battlefield 4. The campaigns of each of these two games also show some amazing scenes and ‘battlefields’ for you to fight through, with Battlefield 4 doing its best on Xbox 360 and PS3 to still provide an amazing experience. Bad Company 2‘s destruction was fantastic and now coupled with Battlefield 3′s good looks, you can buy Battlefield 4 right now to see just how good DICE can make war look.

2. Killzone

Some may argue that Killzone doesn’t take any great steps forward in innovation, but it’s hard to argue that Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 aren’t some of the best looking games this generation. Fully utilizing the power of the PS3, Guerilla Games’ Killzone went from a somewhat average PS2 shooter to a PS3 exclusive heavy hitter. Killzone 2 has some of the most phenomenal real-time events, accentuated by the unique controls and challenging gameplay. Killzone 3 continued this trend whilst shifting the locations from dark skies and rusty metal to icy mountains and lush jungles. If you’re a PS3 owner you’d be doing yourself a favor by buying these games. They’re just that gorgeous.

1. Crysis

Legend tells of a game series with optimal PC specs so high that it might make your wallet cry. Developer Crytek crafted a game for PC so powerful that many thought it was just a glorified tech demo, yet on top of excellent visuals the original Crysis actually delivered a fun core experience. That experience was also brought to the Xbox 360 and PS3 with the arrival of Crysis 2, a game which could easily be called one of the best looking games on Xbox 360. Crytek also ported the original Crysis to Xbox 360 and PS3, giving it a facelift using the Cry Engine 3. To finish the trilogy, and end with a bang, Crysis 3 was released for all platforms, delivering the same high standard of powerful visuals and tactical gameplay. If you thought you’ve seen everything there is to see from FPS games this generation, then you might want to see Crysis 3′s ending for yourself, it might just blow you away.

So that’s it, those were the games that I believe to be the top 5 amazing looking FPS series of this console generation.
