What’s the best thing about gingerbread houses? The candy! Here are some of my favorite candies for gingerbread cookie house decorating. Can you name all of the sweets above? (Left to right, back to front: Twizzlers, chocolate mints, malt balls, gumballs, orange gummies, gum, peppermint suckers, bubble gum tape, crushed root beer candies, gobstoppers, sour cherry balls, fruit tootsie rolls, cherry gummies, jelly bean rocks, and two kinds of gum). Jelly beans are great because they come in so many different flavors like toasted marshmallow, buttered popcorn, and banana. The speckled ones look like rocks or bricks so they work well for decorating fireplaces and chimneys. This fire is made from swirling red and yellow royal icing together with a toothpick. The logs are made from marbled modeling chocolate. The rug is made of gumpaste and the floor is made of chocolate royal icing and caramel crunch. Nowadays you can buy candy legos, which go nicely as toys in a gingerbread house. Can you spot the two flavors of fruit strips above? The red and green speckled “rocks” in this mushroom garden are actually holiday mints. Tangled in the vines of this candy garden are gummy raspberry candies. Here’s Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Can you name all of the candy on the ground around them? (lemon drops, lemon gumballs, jumbo jelly beans, nerds, caramel crunch, red hots, and a jumbo gumball & pretzel lamp post). I also like to use smaller decorations like edible pearls and sprinkles. Here’s all the candy that I used on my 2013 gingerbread house village. It was over $50 worth of candy.

The goal when gingerbread house decorating is to surprise people with where you put the candy. Can you guess what’s on top of this tiny cake that’s on top of a gingerbread table? (Three jelly beans)
