DES MOINES, Iowa– At an event designed to help people upgrade their homes, one non-profit drew a big crowd encouraging people to down size.

The “tiny house” is on display at the Des Moines Homes and Gardens Show at the Iowa Events Center this weekend.

Habitat for Humanity built it in January using materials from ReStore.

The home is less than 500 square feet but has a bed, kitchen, bathroom, shower, and small living area.

Habitat officials say similar homes have been popular with people looking to cut down on bills, go off the grid, or live more simply.

“There are a lot of groups of people looking into this. One is your recent college graduates. They have these huge student loan debts, can barely afford to rent an apartment, and for the price of a car, they can have a home to live in. Some communities are also looking into this as a solution to homelessness,” said Lane Stumme, the director of Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

A Des Moines couple actually purchased the “tiny house.”

You can still see it tomorrow at the Des Moines Homes and Gardens Show from 10 AM to 6 PM.
