Biotechnology is a hot button issue and many wonder if the food created is safe to eat.

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) it is, they go through the steps of how a GM product is approved:

Generally, the developer of the GMO product identifies the distinguishing attributes of genetic traits and assesses if any new material consumed in food could be toxic or allergenic. The developer also compares the levels of nutrients in the new plant compared to traditional plants and then puts this information in a safety assessment, which FDA’s Biotechnology Evaluation Team evaluates.

The FDA teams of scientists have expertise in genetic engineering, toxicology, chemistry, and nutrition to name a few. The consultation is completed only when the teams of scientists are satisfied with the developer’s safety assessment.

Nearly 100 consultations have been completed and approved by FDA.
