TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Five University of Alabama students, including three from north Alabama, were arrested Wednesday as a result of an investigation into hazing allegations involving Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, the university announced Wednesday.
The arrests came following a thorough joint investigation by UAPD and the UA Office of Student Conduct.
Hunter Lee Wagner, 20, of Huntsville; Richard E. Markwalter, 20, of Huntsville; Colter K. Anderson, 21, of Dallas; and John Patrick Buckley, 21, of Houston each face three hazing charges, according to UAPD. Mark Allen Powers, 20, of Athens, faces one hazing charge. Hazing is a Class C misdemeanor.
The men were booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail, and bond amounts are $1,000 for each of them. They have also been placed on interim sanctions by UA and are being referred to UA’s Office of Student Conduct.
“The University of Alabama will not tolerate hazing and takes allegations and incidents of hazing very seriously,” said Dr. Tim Hebson, dean of students. “Students who are the victims of, or who become aware of, hazing incidents are strongly encouraged to bring these incidents to our attention.”
UA, in concert with Phi Gamma Delta International Fraternity, has placed interim sanctions on the chapter. These interim sanctions include no social events and no new member activities.
