DURBAN– December 31 2015: A three-and-a-half year old girl is undergoing trauma counseling after she was punched and pushed during a home invasion in Shongweni. Careline volunteers will treat the child and her father after the attack left the tot with a blue mark and swelling. Jamie Visagie and little Enya were waiting in their Shongweni home for her mother, Cathy Rees, to return on Tuesday. Visagie heard a noise in their driveway and, thinking it was Rees, opened the front door. Fourblack thugs rushed in, slapped the spectacles off his face and held a gun to his head. “Enya and I were shoved around. They wrapped a towel around my head so I could not see their faces. They threw us down on the double bed in the room. “Enya was crying, so they threatened to kill her. They pulled me into the other room to open the safe. I unlocked the safe. They tied me up with ski ropes and telephone cords,” Visagie said. Visagie wanted it all to end so he could get to his daughter. The little girl went silent for the 15 minutes they had him tied up. “I realised the more I fought for Enya, the more harm they were going to do us. As soon as they left, I undid the knots and ran to the room where I last saw her. She was under a blanket. Enya said the guy had punched her,” Visagie said. Rees said Enya was left with a blue mark and swelling behind her right ear and had received medical attention. Doctors are monitoring the injury. “We are not sure if she was hit unconscious and if the covered her up with a blanket. We only discovered she had been injured when police and family arrived later and Enya complained her head was sore,” Rees said. Rees said she had not slept since the ordeal. “They called me white trash and spoke in racial undertones. I was threatened with death numerous times,” Visagie said. Private Security Company Secure Link spokesman, Steven King, said the thugs took appliances, alcohol and food. Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said Visagie was threatened with a knife and firearm. “They ransacked the house and loaded the goods in Visagie’s Opel Corsa bakkie before fleeing the scene,” Zwane said. A case of house robbery has been opened at Hillcrest police station.

A white husband and his wife were shot and wounded on the N12 East near the Voortrekker Road off-ramp in Alberton this afternoon after their car broken down. At about 2.15pm paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene where they found a man and a woman that sustained gunshot wounds. The 48-year-old husband sustained gunshot wounds to his upper and lower leg. His wife, also in her forties, sustained a gunshot wound to her stomach. She was in a critical condition, Werner Vermaak, ER24 spokesman, said. It is understood from the man that they were on their way home from holiday when their BMW X3 broke down along the N12 near the Voortrekker Road off-ramp. While waiting in the emergency lane for breakdown services an unknown black thug apparently appeared and demanded valuables from the couple. Shortly thereafter he opened fire at the couple and ran away. The injured husband explained to paramedics that he managed to get out of the vehicle and flag down passing motorists to call for help. The couple were treated on the scene and transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

DURBAN-January 01 2016: – Burglars might have had a fruitful time in Hillcrest over Christmas, but one homeowner fought back, knocking the stuffing out of two of them. Private security company Secure Link spokesman, Steven King, said the Waterfall area had nine reported crime incidents within 48 hours between December 24 and 25. This included a house robbery, seven burglaries and an incident where a man had his card swiped by ATM scammers and R1 000 withdrawn from it at a local shopping mall. But Kirk Olivier, 53, of Niagara Drive, refused to become a victim. On Christmas Eve, Olivier went to investigate a noise in the lounge. Instead of finding Santa slipping down the chimney, he encountered two black thugs who had ripped the gate off the wall. The thugs attacked him with a metal pipe and a barbeque fork. Olivier, an electronic engineer, fought back and managed to punch one of the assailants in the face. The thugs fled the home empty- handed. “I was in my study looking over some work documents. The noise sounded like the ceiling had collapsed. The duo did not expect me to rush at them. “A pipe was thrown at me. It struck my shoulder and fell to the floor. They both pounded me with the pipes while I wrestled with them. It was blow for blow,” Olivier said. He said his dining room table, chairs and a couch had been overturned in the fracas. He also had bite marks on his knuckles. Two chunks of wall plaster and the burglar gate lay on the floor. One of Olivier’s dogs had a lump on the chest. He said he was not sure if the dog had been hit by the thugs. Hillcrest police are investigating. King urged homeowners to be vigilant and ensure they activated their alarms. “Even if you live in a complex you are just as vulnerable as anybody else. Complex burglaries have increased. “This is just the beginning of the silly season so let’s not make it an easy payday for criminals.”

STRUBENSVALLEY– January 01 2015: A SRT Security Response Vehicle patrolled Witwatersrand Ave, Strubensvalley. The Officer noticed a shocked white female with a African male walking with her in the veld. The Response Officer approached them and noticed that the woman’s trousers were opened. She was shocked and not comprehensive. He noticed the suspect had a black pair of scissors in his hand. A member of he public assisted our Officer and said he should call the police. The black thug then made a run for it. Our Response Officer chased after him but lost him in the reeds close to Christiaan de Wet Ave. Two other SRT Response vehicles gave assistance but could not find the suspect. The woman was taken to the SRT Offices. SRT called the Emergency Services for assistance. Honeydew SAPS, ER24 and the Roodepoort Fire Department gave excellent support. The rape victim was transported to Helen Joseph Hospital for urgent treatment. SRT Security contacted the victim’s family who will assist her.

DURBAN– January 03 2015: The body of a woman with a British passport on her was found in the bushes between Durban’s Suncoast Casino and the Pirates Surf Life Saving Club on Saturday night. Little was known about how the 31-year-old white woman died so a post-mortem will be conducted, said police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane. British authorities would be notified while police start an inquest into her death. Inquests are conducted when the cause of death is not immediately obvious, he explained. Pirates lifeguard Bennie Mthethwa said he was on duty in the lifeguard tower late on Saturday night keeping an eye on festive season night swimmers when a colleague shouted that there was somebody in the bushes. “I grabbed a lifesaving pack and ran down. As soon as we realized she was dead we called the police and other authorities,” he said. “I didn’t stay too long – I left it to police and I had to go back on patrol,” said a shocked Mthethwa. Zwane said police were investigating. The Sunday Times quoted Durban Tourism spokesperson Phillip Sithole as saying that as many as 100 000 people had flocked to the city’s beaches to celebrate the start of 2016.

The consequences of such an action need not be explained.The attack on Wayne & Marina must be seen as an attack on us all, an attack on our businesses, an attack on our way of life and an attack on the reputation of the South Coast. We call o n government to place barriers on the bridges, we call on SAPS to investigate this as a priority crime and for examples to be made of the perpetrator or perpetrators of this cowardly act. His second son, Jacques Deetlefs (39) told the Herald that the rest of the family was in Mossel Bay for a vacation and received the shocking news from his employees. Dr Deetlefs was working from his administration office at the house, although his consulting rooms were situated in Van Zyl Street in Oberholzer. Deetlefs had practiced in the medical field for more than 40 years and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement award for dedicated service from the Medical Association in 2015. His emotional son described him as a “kind, generous and loving man who always put others’ needs before his own. He was also a committed Christian who loved the Bible and the church and had nothing but love for the people around him”. The deceased leaves behind his wife and two sons. His entire family is absolutely grief stricken by the unexpected incident, according to Jacques.

PORT SHEPSTONE– January 04 2016: A white man (33) and a woman (29) were viciously attacked near the Port Shepstone beachfront last night. The white couple was hacked with bush knife by a black thug. Apparently he also raped the woman before fleeing. According to reports the man’s left arm was hacked open and the woman was left with gaping wounds on her head and both thighs. She was also raped. Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said Port Shepstone police responded to the scene near Princess Elizabeth Drive at about 10pm. “The couple was attacked with a bush knife. The suspect also raped the woman before running away,” said Lt-Col Wiid. An attempted murder case has been opened. Shortly afterwards, police were called to Hansen Road, Oslo Beach. “A man watching television in his lounge was attacked by an intruder wielding a bush knife. “The man (45) sustained injuries to the head and was taken to hospital,” she said. TZANEEN- January 05 2016: About 15H00 today a white woman was attacked in her home by an unarmed black thug. She was outside on the phone and went inside the house when the conversation ended. She locked the gate behind her. Her dogs started acting strange and kept on growling towards her bedroom. When entering the bedroom the thug was lying next to the bed. The area was searched but nothing found. The lady is unharmed but in shock. We believe the suspect gained entry through a entrance in the side gate used by the dogs. Suspects gained entry to a Arbuthnot rd and ripped the house apart taking out copper pipes, the suspects stabbed the 85 year old white woman home owner who ho died from her wounds. The stillness of Arbuthnot Street in aManzimtoti on Wednesday morning belied the brutal murder of 84-year-old white Lorraine Roberts, who had been stabbed in her modest family home – apparently for little more than copper piping. When the Daily News arrived, there was an air of tranquility in the leafy, tree-lined street on a hill overlooking the sea. A fleet of police cars parked outside Roberts’s home was the only sign that something was amiss. But inside the house was a different scene: household items lay strewn across the floor, a mattress was pushed up against the wall of one of the bedrooms and the geyser had been hacked apart, causing its contents to spill into the bath. Her lifeless body lay in a heap on the floor, in a pool of blood, partially buried under a pile of clothing and linen. Her nephew’s wife, Lynette Hichens, was there. She had found Roberts a few hours before and spoke about how she had made the grisly discovery. Hichens was visiting – as she has done every morning for several years – to bring Roberts her meals for the day and to do chores around the house. Entering the house that morning, she immediately knew something was wrong. She said despite the fact that Roberts never drank, the smell of liquor permeated the house and the home had been “ransacked, from top to bottom”. “Not a thing was left unturned,” she said. At first, Hichens was unsure what exactly had happened, but when it occurred to her that a break-in had taken place, her concern mounted. She began walking through the house, calling out for Roberts but said she was nowhere to be seen. Eventually, Hichens stumbled upon the elderly woman’s body in the spare room. A slight person, Roberts was barely visible amid the chaos and Hichens did not see her there at first. “I had to look twice,” she said. Roberts’s face was covered, in part, by a piece of cloth. It did not appear as if it had been placed there on purpose, Hichens said, but rather as though it had fallen on her. Hichens said she removed the piece of cloth. “And I could see she wasn’t alive.” Roberts had been stabbed in the stomach. A frantic Hichens ran outside, where she found officers from a local security company who helped her contact the authorities. Hichens, who lives close by, was visibly shaken. She said the violent nature of Roberts’s death had left her completely unsettled and likened the incident to an act of terrorism. On Wednesday, it looked as though little more than copper piping had been taken from the house. Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said eManzimtoti police were investigating a case of murder. “The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage and no arrests have been made,” he said.

PRETORIA- January 07 2015: An eight year old white child, his 10 year old brother and their parents became the latest victims of violent crime in Eldoraigne, Centurion. Four black thugs brutally attacked Leon and Alet Jones with knives and a monkey wrench in their Centurion home in the early hours of the morning on Thursday with their ten year old son witnessing the attack. His 8 year old brother in the adjacent room slept through the horror. At approximately 02:05 on 7 January 2016 Leon was rudely awaken by his bedroom light being switched on. As he tried to get up, he was hit with a monkey wrench on the head. His wife Alet, who also by then was awake, got stabbed in the arm with a knife, cutting the artery in her left arm. She started to bleed profusely. Leon managed to get out of bed and he noticed four thugs in his bedroom. He bravely started to fight the thugs. Three of them attacked him with knives, whilst the fourth one used the monkey wrench. During the fight he sustained several stab wounds – twice in the chest which punctured his lung, one above the right eye and several in his legs. He was also struck two more times with the monkey wrench on the head. Alet got stabbed 4 times in her left arm and 3 times in her leg. Whilst brutally attacking the couple, they continuously shouted to Leon and Alet that they will die. One of the thugs then produced a handgun and pointed it at Leon and told him to stop or else he will be killed. The fight stopped and the thugs demanded firearms from Leon. Leon informed them that he had no firearms, and the thugs left the bedroom to search the house. Leon, Alet and his one son remained in the bedroom and after a while when everything went quiet he realized that the thugs have left with various electronic equipment. The family got into their car and drove to Unitas Hospital where both Leon and Alet underwent surgery. The thugs gained access to the house by forcing open the security gate and back door. One of the thugs had dreadlocks and was wearing a yellow, blue and red striped jersey/top. The two children were unharmed. Talking to his parents after the attacked he witnessed, their 10 year old son said he is never going to sleep again, as he wants to be awake and waiting for the thugs if they return.

PRETORIA– January 09 2016: Fiona Zerbst and her friend Carmen le Roux were attacked & beaten while hiking in the reserve on Saturday morning. There has been yet another attack on hikers in the Groenkloof nature reserve. Fiona Zerbst and her friend Carmen le Roux were attacked, beaten and robbed by black thugs while hiking in the reserve last Saturday morning. Zerbst, a published poet and author of the book Oleander, said two men jumped out of the bushes as they were walking along a trail in the reserve. “We had been jogging when two of the staff at the reserve came to us and warned us to keep a lookout, as some of the paths may be dangerous,” said Zerbst. “Barely five minutes later, while we were walking down the same path, two black thugs jumped out of the bushes.” Zerbst, who has martial arts training, advised Le Roux not to show fear and to simply greet the men as their intentions were not immediately clear. “We said ‘hello’ and they greeted us back. They continued to walk towards us. I noticed something was wrong when one of the men took off his shirt and tucked it into his pants,” she said. The two thugs then grabbed rocks and ran towards Zerbst and Le Roux. One of the thugs then hit Le Roux over the head with the stone. Zerbst instinctively reacted and pre-emptively attacked the thug rushing towards her. The two scuffled before the other thug joined in and they pushed Zerbst into the bushes. “The one then started choking me as I was lying in the bushes. Luckily I managed to kick his leg, so he let go,” she said. The other thug then grabbed a cloth sack she was carrying around her waist, which contained a phone and others items. The thugs also grabbed Le Roux’s phone, and the two disappeared into the bushes. “We are fortunate to be okay, but something needs to be done to curb these attacks,” said Zerbst. This is the latest in a string of attacks at nature reserves in Pretoria over the past year. In May 2015, an elderly couple was tied up, beaten, and robbed in Groenkloof. The modus operandi of the attackers in both instances are eerily similar. On Thursday 21 May, a father and son cycling at the Voortrekker Monument were attacked and robbed by two men who pelted them with large rocks.

BENONI– January 12 2016: Karen Rautenbach (48), who was found dead in her Brentwood Park home recently, was a warrior, who lived and loved fiercely until her death. Karen Rautenbach’s body was recently found in her Brentwood Park home. This is how she was described by her daughter, Callie (24), whom Rautenbach raised as a single mother. Rautenbach’s body was discovered by her domestic worker on the morning of Tuesday, January 12. At the time of publishing it was still unknown when exactly she died. “The police suspect that the deceased might have been strangled and the incident may have occurred a few days earlier,” said Benoni SAPS spokesperson, Const Zunickha Essakjee. Callie described her reaction upon hearing of her mother’s death. “I was absolutely shocked, heartbroken, devastated,” she said. “My mom’s domestic worker called me from a neighbors’ phone, telling me to come to the house, because something strange was going on. “When I arrived at the house, it had already been taped off as a crime scene. “As soon as I saw that, I knew (my mother) wasn’t there anymore.” Callie said her mother lived alone with her beloved three pet dogs, Pug, Gup and Bunty. She spent a lot of her time with her pets. Callie explained that she and her mother had a very close relationship, as Callie was Rautenbach’s only child. “My mother was a selfless woman, who raised me as a single mother, sacrificing a lot in the process,” Callie said. Rautenbach had lived in Benoni her whole life and worked as a salesperson until her death. On Thursday, January 14, the Benoni SAPS brought a man in for questioning in connection with Rautenbach’s death. Acting station commander Col Martin van Nieuwenhuizen said the man had not been charged with murder, but several suspects were yet to be eliminated through investigations. Die slagoffer, wat luidens berigte alleen woon, kon egter eers om 05:40 daarin slaag om ‘n verbygaande motoris op pad gimnasium toe in die straat voor te keer met die versoek om Edwel-gemeenskapsforum te kontak, vertel forum-woordvoerder, Antuanette Pretorius. Aangesien die slagoffer se selfoon tydens die voorval gesteel is, kon sy nie self die forum kontak nie, maar het wel ‘n besigheidskaartjie met die forum se noodnommers daarop aan die persoon wat haar te hulp gesnel het, getoon. Die gemeenskapsforum is ontbied en ‘n saak is by die polisie aanhangig gemaak. Volgens Pretorius word ‘n kriminele saak ondersoek. ‘n Ruit is stukkend geslaan waardeur dieswart kriminele toegang tot die huis gekry het en ‘n makker het vermoedelik buite waggehou. Teen druktyd kon die polisie egter nog nie die saak bevestig nie, maar die huis waar die voorval plaasgevind het, was afgesper.

WITRIVIER– Januariy 13 2016: A white man and his wife were attacked & overpowered and tied up by three black armed thugs at their home on the Plaston Road last night. The thugs burnt a plastic bag, intending to torture the couple by burning them with the molten plastic. According to Const Cynthia Mbokodo of White River SAPS, the home owner stated that he was closing the door and locking up for the night when three black thugs grabbed him and tied him and his wife up. The thugs reportedly demanded to know where the safe was and wanted cash. The man told them that he didn’t have firearms but said they could check his wallet for cash. The two victims were then taken to their bedroom where the thugs proceeded to intimidate them and repeated their demands. The attackers burnt a plastic bag, intending to torture the couple by burning them with the molten plastic.According to the male victim’s statement, the thugs had a firearm but didn’t actively point it at them. The three attackers apparently realised that they weren’t going to find any firearms on the premises and proceeded to steal items like a camera, laptop, iPhone and cash, before heading off. No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing. Community members that have any information pertaining to the case are urged to contact the White River police station on 013-750-0888. Mbokodo advised community members to be on the alert and lock doors and gates and activate their security alarms. “They should also check around the house to see if anything is suspicious when they get home from work. Domestic workers and gardeners, who are at people’s homes during the day should keep a lookout for anything suspicious. They should not open the gate or doors for anyone, except when the home owner has arranged for them to open for someone specific,” she concluded.

André was op pad om vir sy broer in Musina te gaan kuier. Hy het by die OTM gestaan en gesels met ‘n familie-vriendin van sy broer, toe twee swart kriminele hulle genader het. Diekriminele het messe by hulle gehad en André en die vrou (wat anoniem wil bly), tot by André se bakkie geforseer. In die bakkie het die kriminele André beveel om koers te kry na die Hanglip Bosbou-area. Naby die hoek van Stubbs– en Rivierstraat het die krminele André beveel om af te trek in die grondpad en in die bosse stil te hou. “Toe ons stilhou, het hulle gesê ek moet uitklim. Een van die kriminele het my toe begin steek met die mes,” het André Dinsdag gesê. Die anderkriminele, volgens André, het aanvanklik nie betrokke geraak by die struweling nie. Dit was eers toe André en die eerste krimineel tydens die gestoei op die grond land, dat die tweedekrimineel tot hulp van sy makker gekom het. Diékrimineel het ‘n baksteen beetgekry en vir André daarmee herhaaldelik oor die kop geslaan, totdat hy half bewusteloos was. Terwyl André op die grond gelê het, het die twee kriminele sy bakkie leeggesteel. Buiten vir die kontant wat hulle gebuit het, het die kriminele ook sy bank- en lisensiekaarte en selfone gevat. Selfs die sleutels van sy bakkie, asook dié van sy maatskappyvoertuig, het diekriminele gesteel. Hierna het die kriminele op die vlug geslaan. Die vrou wat saam met André was, is erg getraumatiseerd en het ‘n klein snywond opgedoen aan haar hand toe sy probeer help het. Hulle het na die pad gestap, waar hulle toe hulp kon ontbied. André het heelwat snywonde aan sy hande, arms en kop opgedoen en moes hospitaal toe geneem word vir steke. “Weet jy, op die ou einde kos al die goed wat hulle gesteel het baie geld, maar dit is nie jou lewe werd nie,” het André gesê. Hy het ‘n beroep gedoen op inwoners om meer paraat te wees oor wat in hul onmiddellike omgewing aangaan.

Ek sien nog sy gesig voor my.” So vertel die 19-jarige Charné Erasmus wat Sondag met ’n vuurwapen teen haar kop gedreig is toe ’n swart krimineel haar van haar selfoon by Kareelaan woonstelle in Reitzstraat beroof het. Charné was omstreeks 01:00 besig om ‘n fliek in haar kamer te kyk. Haar ma was aan die slaap in die ander kamer. Na ’n lang dag se trek wou dié tweedejaarstudent net bietjie ontspan. “Ek het ’n geluid gehoor en gedink dit is dalk my ma wat opgestaan het,” vertel sy. Haar ma was egter steeds in die bed. Sy het daarna twee swart kriminele gesien wat deur die venster van haar woonstel klim. “Die een was reeds binne en die ander was nog besig om in te klim.” Sy het op hulle geskree terwyl sy na haar ma gehardloop het. Gelukkig het die kriminele gevlug sonder om enige iets te steel of iemand te beseer. Mooirivier Beskerming het gereageer nadat hulle die oproep gekry het, maar kon nie die verdagtes opspoor nie. Dit was egter nie die einde van Charnè en haar ma se beproewing nie. Teen omstreeks 03:00 het Charné en haar ma buite gesit en koffie drink omdat nie een van hulle kon slaap nie. “My ma het iets naby die karre, wat naaste aan die hek geparkeer was, gesien beweeg. Toe sy nader loop, het twee swart mans aangeloop gekom. Een van hulle het ’n vuurwapen in sy hand gehad wat hy oorgehaal het soos wat hy nader stap,” vertel Charné. Gevries van skok, het sy op die stoep gesit tot sy die koue staal teen haar voorkop gevoel het. “Ek onthou dit nog alles, dit speel gereeld in my kop af. Hy het baie aggressief begin skree toe hy nader gestap het, maar ons het so hard geskree dat ons nie gehoor het wat hy sê nie. Haar ma het intussen tot by haar gekom en haar gegryp om haar in die woonstel in te sleep. Op daardie oomblik het die man Charnè se selfoon gegryp en gevlug. “Ons het die wag wat aan diens was by die kompleks gaan soek, maar kon haar nêrens kry nie,” vertel Charné. Haar vriende het Mooirivier Beskerming gebel wat baie vinnig saam met die polisie gereageer het. Die erg geskokte Charné sê sy is nou te bang om iewers heen te loop. Tot tyd en wyl bly sy maar in ’n gastehuis totdat hulle ’n ander woonstel kan kry. Ao. Mpho Manyoba, polisiewoordvoerder, het die voorval bevestig. Volgens haar is daar nog niemand aangekeer nie en word die saak ondersoek.

NEWCASTLE– January 15 2016: A white business owner will stand trial for shooting a black thug that was trying to rob him. . A man has been arrested for attempted murder following an armed robbery at Terminus Street in Newcastle CBD, on January 15. A white businessman had just locked the doors to his shop, when he was approached by two black men allegedly armed with a gun, who demanded entry to his shop, said police spokesperson, Captain Shooz Magudulela. Trying to protect his business, an altercation ensued between the owner and the alleged two thugs, one of whom sustained a serious gunshot wound. “He was later transported to hospital where he was treated for his injuries,” said Capt. Magudulela. The business owner was arrested and charged for attempted murder. He is still in police custody, awaiting a trial date. Investigations continue.
