FRANK HALEY [KDAZ-730 newscaster – ex KLIF-1190, KILT-610, KTRH-950, KVIL FM & KOB-770] (Albuquerque, NM) Subject: Ron Jenkins. FYI. Dallas Tornado. Did you hear about Ron Jenkins: I got this from Facebook Texas Radio Hall of Fame: TRHOF inductee Ron Jenkins (Ron McAlister) was one of the residents evacuated from the Rowlett Nursing Home and Convalescent Center for Saturday’s tornado, east of Dallas. I’ve read that the building suffered wind damage, but haven’t heard if residents were allowed to return. Ron has lived in the center for about 15 years, after a series of strokes (and eventual blindness) occurred. Hope you have a happy new year. Frank Haley

KENT BURKHART [legendary radio programmer] (Miami/Key Biscayne, FL) Mr. Rose. When you read this you will know why Jim Phillips was president of the TAB and was selected one of the very few…less than 100 I believe…of the TAB Radio Pioneer award. He is one of the top ten Texas broadcasters ever in my opinion. Jim and I were partners in a radio station package in South Carolina. He was a talented broadcaster. He hired a lot of on air and sales talent in Texas over the years. He will be missed by those he helped…and others. Read on and let your mouth drop. Kent Burkhart. TRIVIA ANSWER: On January 3, 1987 Aretha Franklin is the first female singer to induct into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1967, Aretha’s album I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) releases. The first song a cover of Otis Redding’s Respect reaches #1 on both the R&B and Pop charts. Aretha scores her first two Grammy Awards.

MIKE BRAUN [ex KWTX-1230 DJ] (Waco, TX) Subject: KWTX-FM celebrates 45 years. Jim, I intended to sent this note in December, but the month got away from me. KWTX-FM (97.5) Waco, celebrated 45 years in December (1970-2015). In the beginning the station aired “The Golden Sound” — mostly instrumentals — Percy Faith, Andre Kostelanetz, Ferrante and Teicher, Mantovani, etc., – and a few vocals from the likes of Perry Coma, Jerry Vale, Frank Sinatra, etc. “97.5 on your FM dial in stereo” was very popular throughout Central Texas back in the day. And it’s where I got my start in radio thanks to Dave South (program director, now Texas A&M sports announcer), the late Frank Fallon (station manager), and M.N. Buddy Bostick (president and general manager of KWTX) — all of whom gave a young broadcasting novice the opportunity of a lifetime to spin records and talk on the radio. By the way, Mr. Bostick was station manager of KWTX-AM (1230) when it signed on in 1946. He celebrated birthday number 97 this past year. Best wishes, Mike Braun, KWTX-AM/FM, 1975-1979
