GUNMAN FIRES AT TV NEWS REPORTER Over the weekend in Charleston, WV an unknown gunman fires a shot at television news reporter Sean Delancey while he performs an interview with a local citizen about a recent shooting at a local department store. When the shots blast, remarkably, neither Sinclair WCHS TV ABC CH 8 Charleston-Huntington, WV reporter Sean Delancey, nor the local woman he interviews receive injuries. The incident makes quite an impression on newsman Delancey: When I heard the first shot, my whole body went stiff.

NY TIMES ZONKS 100 NEWS In times like these, Newspapers are like revolving doors. The New York Times layoffs officially begin. According to a memo from the Newspaper Guild of New York, the Times slashes 21 union members. With 57 union members plus about 30 non-union members who accept a buyout, the Times runs circles around its goal to reduce its newsroom by 100. The Guild’s note states: Discharged employees will be presented with a severance package and likely their last day of work is sometime this week, possibly even the day they are given the news.

ROUTE 66 RETURNS TO TV From October 7, 1960 to its final episode on March 20, 1964 television seriesRoute 66 captivates us fans. ROBERT MILLER [Eastern Michigan University Professor] (Detroit/Plymouth, MI) Subject: JIM ROSE REMEMBERS RADIO December 19, 2014 [Friday] Issue #1365. Jim & Suzie, Wishing you a Merry Christmas and looking forward to another great year of your work! Like you, I have million dollar memories from the places I’ve worked-KVOU, KBUC, KONO-TV, KEEZ-FM, WSTX, WHOA, WJKC-FM. (Wow, what a ride). I have great stories about each one of those places. Sad to say that teaching Intro to Electronic Media is discouraging. The kids today have zero interest in how radio and television happens. Sincerely Bob Miller

JOAN PATE-DAY [late Sam Pate’s sister] (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: add. Jim add my “better half” to your mailing list ( he drove the news van with flashing words across top for KLIF ) Also conductor for Santa Fe RR for 37 years. William “Bill” Day wllamda@suddenlink.net

BILL DAY [Joan Day’s spouse] (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Jim, my wife (Joan) was right. I did work for KLIF for a while. My main job was the Santa Fe Railroad. I am now retired from the Santa Fe Railroad as a Conductor. I did drive the unit that had the neon, or flashing lights on top of the unit for KLIF Radio. I know you remember that unit. I would receive the news of the hour via two-way radio, type it out on a ticker-tape, It would punch the message on the tape, I would tape the ends together, load it into the machine it go around, and around. I would find a traffic jam and there I would let it play, and play. Joan and I both are retired from the Railroad. We have a Amtrak pass, and we have never been on a train, after retirement.

TONY WILLIAMS [WKY-930/KRLD-1080] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Regarding salaries, my first paying job in radio was weekends in Lawton, OK in 1971. I drove from the University of Oklahoma to KLAW to work Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. After my shift on Saturday night, I slept on the floor of the production room. It wasn’t that bad. The room was dark … and carpeted, and I was 19 years old. Minimum wage. In 1974, I was hired at WKY in Oklahoma City (12-6 a.m. Tuesday-Friday and 2-6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday). $165 a week. I did not ask for a raise, but Danny Williams, the PD, gave me one after about three months. My wife and I lived in a newly-built apartment — $90 a month, furnished with all bills paid. High cotton, huh?

TRIVIA ANSWER: According to Wikipedia, The first official paid advertising to appear on American commercial television is on July 1, 1941 on WNBT TV CH 4 (now WNBC) NYC before a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. The Bulova watches announcement costs anywhere from $4.00 to $9.00 displays a WNBT TV test pattern that looks like a clock with the hands showing the time. The Bulova logo, Bulova Watch Time, is in the lower right-hand portion of the test pattern while the second hand sweeps around the dial for one minute.
