SUN-TIMES DROPS PRINT GOES ONLINE Sun-Times says times like these call for drastic measures. In a major shift, Wrapports, LLC parent company of Chicago’s Sun-Times Media sells all of its suburban newspapers to Tribune Publishing – parent company of the Chicago Tribune. On Friday, October 31, 2014 Sun-Times Media’s 6 daily and 32 weekly suburban newspapers join the Chicago Tribune Media Group (CTMG): Chicago Tribune, RedEye, Hoy!, Chicago magazine, Naperville magazine along with other Chicago-based media brands. Sun-Times suburban newspapers’ 143 editorial and sales employees are now Tribune employees. Sun-Times move displays its faith in online news, but lack of support for print’s future.

TEXANS BLOCK COWBOYS Here in Houston, TX we lifelong Dallas Cowboys fans will miss a very important game on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Fox TV has both the Houston Texans – Philadelphia Eagles clash plus the Dallas Cowboys – Arizona Cardinals NFL showdown on schedule at the same time at noon but we here in the Bayou City miss the 6-2 Dallas Cowboys game in favor of the 4-4 Houston Texans miss-match. Give me a ticket for an airplane to Big D to see if Tony Romo, with his extra padding to protect his newly injured back, lines up against the 6–1 Arizona Cardinals or if Cowboys backup quarterback Brandon Weeden jogs out onto the field in Jerry Jones’ new $1.2 Billion dollar NFL fortress in Arlington, TX.

RED JONES [2008 Georgia Radio Hall of Fame – retired from WKNG-1060 [W] June 15, 2011 after 63 years in radio] (Carrollton-Tallapoosa, GA) Subject: on line radio stations. I know there are a number of internet stations and such as Pandora, but Carl Peeples in Douglasville, GA has I think one of the better. Carl’s Gold Radio. A mix of absolute hits from the 40s through the 80s. His sequence and balance of so much music from so many genres is excellent. Also great history bits and even an occasional commercial from Pall Mall, Lucky Strike, and other choice bygone classic spots. Add to that station jingles from the past from some 200 big name stations around the country. Very different and very good. And coming soon Carl’s Country Gold. I’ll be voice tracking it 24/7. Even in retirement, there’s a little ham left in all of us. Google Carl’s Gold for his home web page and click from there. Let me know what you think. Red Jones Georgia Radio Hall of Fame

BILL CHERRY (Dallas, TX) [Realtor in late 1950s Music 'til Dawn host on WWL-870] Hi, Jim — You may or not know. Houston radio man for a zillion years, Don LeBlanc, (now retired) has just had 1/2 of his right kidney removed. Cancer. However, it was contained within the margins, so his docs have said he is cancer free. He’s supposed to be going home this weekend, according to his wife, Maryanne. I don’t know where all Don worked over the years, but the first time I heard him, I was about 17 and he had a program on KTRH 740 called Music ’til Midnight. Bill Cherry

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Hi, I have started playing the violin more than in the past. I played it from the summer between the 1st and 2nd grades but quit in the 7th grade. A year later I started singing in the church choir. I liked a girl Marcella Robertson but was too young to date, so I joined the choir so I could at least be doing something that might get her to notice me… The next year I started playing the guitar, the choir director played Classical Guitar on a Goya. I talked my parents into buying me a guitar for Christmas. That year I got from them a Silvertone from Sears and also they gave me an album Sounds Of Silence, they might have been trying to tell me something. I then was at a book sale and found a copy of a book Anglo- American Folksongs by Abrams Foss, it talked about traditional folk music in English as compared to other traditions in the Americas. Anyway, on the violin I can play simple tunes like: Battle Hymn Of The Republic, Just As I Am, Promise Land, Mary Had Little Lamb, More Pretty Girls Than One, Sourwood Mountain. I like playing but not near enough to make money… -30- KC5RAI

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1954, the Federal Communications Commission goes after Hank Ballard’s Work With Me, Annie because of its purple play on words. Hank Ballard’s record holds #1 on Billboard R&B for 7 weeks. In 1955, Top 40 WABB-1480 receives over 15,000 letters of complaint about its playing of dirty records. WABB-1480 promises to censor all controversial R&B tunes.
