MOTOWN SQUATTERS TRASH TV REPORTER When WXYZ TV ABC CH 7 Detroit, MI reporter Ronnie Dahl leads efforts to evict squatters, she becomes a target of their food-based rage. Dahl approaches the group of squatters as they drive away from the house they recently take over. They toss what appears to be soda on her and later throw what looks like a bottle of barbecue sauce at her. As Dahl does a live shot that covers their eviction they drive by and whip out the barbecue sauce again. Ronnie shouts at the thugs: Just so you guys know, you’re live on television. I wouldn’t do that. But they do. A TV Spy reader observes: The same thug attitude that keeps Detroit down, and people wonder why it can’t be saved.

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST These days digitization reigns supreme in the paper magazine publication industry. Many folks prefer to read their magazines on the Internet than receive paper copies in the mail. Personally, Classic automobile oriented magazines are OK on the Internet but I still prefer to hold paper copies of my favorite auto magazines in my hand. Ladies’ Home Journal’s ad pages are on the decline for years, plus they drop 22 percent during the first quarter of 2014. Ladies’ Home Journal which is with us since 1883 recently makes a bold move. Meredith plans to continue publishing LHJ, but it will reduce Ladies’ Home Journal to a quarterly, newsstand-only publication. As a result of its decision to decrease LHJ’s publication frequency, LHJ cuts 35 of its staff members. Hang on in there baby.
RADIO AND TV PERSONALITIES VISIT RICKLES BACK STAGE One of our all time favorite comedians, Don Rickles, has a multi-month tour of casino appearances. After his performance at the Northern Lights Theater at Potawatomi Bingo Casino in Milwaukee, WI on Tuesday night, April 8, 2014 a large group of Chicago, IL radio and television stars journey up north to see the show and visit with Mr. Warmth himself. For approximately 15 minutes, Chicago media personalities WGN-720 host Bill Leff, WGN-720 host Dave Plier, WGN TV producer/personality Jeff Hoover, WCIU TV/Me TV host Rich Koz, Me-TV Director of On-Air Operations Jim Roche and Pop culture historian (and frequent guest on WGN-720) Kevin Pokorny meet the almost 88 year-old insult comic legend back stage.
BLACKBERRY NOW FEATURES FM RADIO In January 2014, Leslie Stimson writes that Blackberry has an update available for its BlackBerry Z30, Q10 and Q5 models that includes FM capability. Wilkinson Barker Knauer attorney David Oxenford says that AT&T recently sends him the FM radio software update for his Blackberry Q10 and he tries it out. David tells Radio World: The reception is great in and around D.C. even with using headphones or ear buds acting as the antenna. Oxenford discovers the radio tab under the Music icon on the touch screen. The screen is populated with the frequencies of radio stations that are in your area. Tap on the frequency, and the local station immediately starts playing. The change from one station to another is in less than the blink of an eye.

Hello again, Jim: Yes, I do remember the market pie being big enough to accommodate at least one station of most any format…here, it was WHBQ and WMPS battling it out…we always won! I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention that we were battling it out for #2; WDIA, the nation’s first black format station was always solid #1, and rightly so; they did exactly what the FCC said do; they served the listeners…Memphis was 38% black in those days, and all 38% were WDIA fans…B.B. AFN Europe turns off its 873 AM radio transmitter in Central Germany May 31, as part of Department of Defense’s ongoing efforts to reduce operating costs. It is one of two that serves Wiesbaden Army Airfield. AM 873 provides a mix of news, talk and political commentary. The second transmitter, 98.7 FM, broadcasts AFN The Eagle, 24/7 service of contemporary music, community information & top of the hour news. News & talk fans can listen to two Power Network Shows, Morning Newswatch, from 0600-0900 & Afternoon Newswatch from 1600-1880 weekdays on AFN 360: Internet Radio. 873 AM transmitter, off post in Weisskirchen, Germany, singled out for cost savings because of isolated location & high-cost upkeep. AFN Europe anticipates additional changes to provide American military with quality entertainment & command information, while being good stewards of taxpayer dollars.

MIKE BRAUN [ex KWTX-1230 Waco, TX] (Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: KWTX celebrates number 68. Jim, KWTX-AM in Waco celebrates 68 years of broadcasting in a few days. KWTX radio’s inaugural broadcast was May 1, 1946, at “1-2-3 on your dial” (1230 kc) from its original second-floor studio at 108-1/2 South 6th Street in downtown Waco. The station was a Mutual affiliate and aired a mix of local and network music, news, sports and drama. KWTX was founded by Corsicana lawyer Beauford Jester and a group of Waco businessmen. Jester would be elected Texas governor in 1946 and again in 1948. He died in 1949; the only Texas governor to die while in office. The station moved to a new facility at 4520 Bosque Blvd. in Waco around 1952. This building would become known as Broadcast Center, and after the building was expanded, it shared space with KWTX-TV (Channel 10) in 1955 and KWTX-FM (97.5) in 1970. KWTX radio and TV moved from 4520 Bosque Blvd. to a new building at 6700 American Plaza in 1986. The Bosque Blvd. building later became Oakcrest Funeral Home. KWTX-AM and FM were sold to GulfStar Communications in 1996. The stations are now owed by Clear Channel Communications and are located at 314 West State Hwy. 6 in Waco. KWTX-TV was sold to Gray Communications in 1999 and remains at 6700 American Plaza. The KWTX-AM transmitter and tower are in their original location near Primrose Drive between South 16th and South 18th streets (off LaSalle Avenue) in Waco. Allwine who later becomes Disney’s official voice of Mickey Mouse marries voice-over actress, Russi Taylor, who is the official voice of Minnie Mouse. On May 18th, 2009 Tony Allwine passes away at 62 due to complications of diabetes.
