GLEN BECK PRAISES RADIO In a special appearance at Premiere Networks Talk Show Boot Camp 5 in Dallas, TX syndicated Talk radio host and BlazeTV personality Glenn Beck tells its attendees to have courage if they truly want to succeed in life. The multi-media mogul credits veteran Talk programmer and TSBC co-host Gabe Hobbs with giving him his first big break. Beck also tells the gathering of talk hosts and other industry executives why he still loves radio: Radio is still the most powerful medium ever. It is a medium where listeners think of you as their friend and one where you can build an intimate relationship with your audience. Beck also advises those on-the-air to never underestimate the audience and to be a beacon to those who you want to attract to your show.

JOURNAL DIVIDES AND CONQUERS RADIO AND TV PROPERTIES Journal Broadcast Group’s re-alignment that separates its radio and TV properties means that Steve Wexler, Journal Broadcast Group EVP and GM for the Milwaukee TV and radio stations, takes on the new role of EVP of Journal radio. Debbie Turner is new EVP of Journal television. Andre Fernandez, Journal Communications President/CFO, explains: As we have invested in our broadcast businesses and expanded our geographic footprint over the last decade, we believe that repositioning our segment around television and radio recognizes the unique expertise we’ve always had in Journal Broadcast Group around each medium. These changes should help us further improve our operational performance.

JIM PREWITT [Catfish-CBS Radio KNCI FM (105.1)] (Sacramento, CA) Hey bud don’t worry about it. I just read on John Landecker’s Facebook one of the comments about him not being in the nat radio hall of fame. He writes the people with not much talent get the awards, they put all their concentration in winning awards… Don’t sweat it. You’re a h*** of a unique writer and nice guy and DJ to boot! Give Lacy a biscuit. Sent from Studio A Jim Prewitt (www.JimPrewitt.com)

JERRY HEILMAN (Nacogdoches, TX) Subject: NEW CD. Any old folks out there who remember the late Rev. Grady Nutt will be glad to hear that his sons, Tony and Perry, have put up a new website dedicated to their father’s memory, www.gradynutt.com/. They are currently offering a 2CD compilation of Grady’s stories for Christmas. It includes several stories from the former Hee Haw humorist that have never been released before. I remember the Nutt family well. When I was just a little tyke, we had a black dog named Lady. It seems that Grady’s dog got run over, so my parents offered the family our dog. I cried when Lady left, but became friends with the Nutts as I grew up. His father was the longtime owner of Grady’s Hat Company in Jacksonville after he retired from preaching. Grady drew many of his stories from experiences his father had while serving as a “circuit rider” preacher. If you enjoy good, clean, Christian based humor, check out this 2 CD set.

A young man who is the grandson of Allan Paul English, a DJ on KITE in the 60s & 70s, has contacted me in an effort to find out something about his granddad’s days in radio. He writes: “I never met him before he died. I’m trying to find information about his time as a DJ. Please let me know if there is someone I can talk to about discovering more about this history.” If any of you can help please let me know and I’ll pass the information along to the grandson. Or, if you are willing to talk with him, I can provide him with your contact information. Just let me know… Thanks, Everybody! Liz

STEVE CUMMING [ABC oldies/KLIF-570/WBAP-820/North TX Radio for the Blind & Austin Info Radio] (D/FW, TX) Subject: Reviving radio. The only way to revive the medium is get it out of the hands of the corporate bean-counters and back into the hands of real broadcasters with some time and grade in the business. (Mom and pops in concept, at least.) It would have to be done in all sizes of markets, but if it happened to a few stations in major markets where some of the best veteran talents live, it could get interesting. However, who is going to lay out the cash in such a risky endeavor? Steve Cumming; Dallas, TX

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1964, singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend and bassist John Entwistle form British Rock band The Who. Shortly thereafter, drummer Keith Moon joins The Who’s band. On December 3, 1979 The Who’s tour of the United States mars with tragedy when a crowd crush at Riverfront Coliseum kills 11 fans and injures 26 others. This happens because of the festival’s seating arrangements where seating is unassigned (non-reserved). So, the first to enter the venue gets the best seats. Many fans who wait outside mistake The Who’s sound check for its actual concert. They force their way inside. When only a fraction of the arena’s entrance doors are open, a bottleneck occurs. With so many thousands of fans trying to gain entry, the crush becomes deadly.

FR. BOB TOMLINSON (Jacksonville-Lake Striker, TX) Subject: Birthday. Thank you Jim for the Birthday greeting. It’s hard to believe I’m 66. I feel much younger and thanks to good genes look it as well. Hope all is well with you and Lacy and thanks again. Bob Tomlinson

OVID [Roman poet 'Metamorphoses'] I grabbed a pile of dust, and holding it up, foolishly asked for as many birthdays as the grains of dust, I forgot to ask that they be years of youth.
