FOX TV SENDS SUPER BOWL TO EUROPE For the first time ever Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia will be able to watch Super Bowl XLVIII live via Fox International Channels. New England QB Tom Brady says that he will not watch the Super Bowl: I could care less. Super Bowl XLVIII with the NFC champion Seattle Seahawks vs. the AFC Champion Denver Broncos at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on Sunday, February 2, 2014. The live European broadcast begins at 00:25am (CET) on February 3rd. It’s Denver Broncos vet QB Peyton Manning against Super Bowl newcomer young Seattle Seahawks franchise quarterback Russell Wilson. Manning is four-time MVP with the Indianapolis Colts for 14 seasons from 1998 to 2011.

COLLAPSE OF MAINSTREAM MEDIA Cable TV channels in disbelief as to why their ratings numbers plunge. From November 2012 to November 2013, MSNBC loses almost half of its viewers as 45% of its audience disappears. Same is true at CNN when 48% of its viewers evaporate over the same 12 month period. MSM ousts real news reports for celebrity paparazzi. A recent case in point is the breaking news of 19-year-old Teeny Bopper diva Justin Bieber’s arrest for racing his yellow Lamborghini submarine on the streets of Miami Beach. What about real news items like NSA spying on American citizens? A good example is when MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell interrupts Congresswoman Jane Harman as she discusses NSA spying to switch to breaking news about Justin Bieber’s arrest for racing.

AGENT FOX CHARLIE CHARLIE CLOSES IN Upon inspection of its tower site, the FCC awards Birach Broadcasting’s 13,000 Watt Daytime Only WTOR-770 Ethnic (Punjabi, Serbian, Macedonian and Urdu Radio) Youngstown, NY a $10,000 NAL (Notice of Apparent Liability) fine because the FCC says it fails to enclose its antenna structures. The FCC agent observes that almost half the fence surrounding a tower is on the ground. When the agent tries to lift the fence, the agent finds it difficult because the grass grows through and around the fence. Now get this. The FCC agent says: the gate and fencing support posts for the tower had been removed and are lying on the ground. The antenna structures have radio frequency (RF) at their bases. The FCC says this is a no no.

CHUCK CASHMERE [ex KNUZ] (San Diego-Carlsbad, CA) Subject: Gaylon Christie. What a loss to the local community. Gaylon was one of the finest people I’ve known in radio. He was one of the fellows who referred me to a job at KTEM after I was discharged form the army at FT. Hood. He and the other guys at KTON had played a record I’d cut shortly before being drafted and I’d gone by to thank them for the air play. When they quizzed me about my future I mentioned I’d had a little experience in radio and they suggested I try KTEM where there was an opening. So began my short venture into broadcasting. I didn’t last long and migrated back to Houston where I did a little radio with two other part time jobs. I never forgot Gaylon and tried to stay in touch for a few years. He was a real down to earth person, never saw him with an inflated ego and know that he contributed a lot to the local community. RIP Gaylon. You were one of kind.

BUD BUSCHARDT [former Director WFAA TV CH-8, ABC satellite radio PD/host] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Congratulations! Thanks Jim. The years have gone by in a hurry. I have many students out there in radio-land, TV-land, and movie-land that I’m very proud to have known for a short time while they were in the RTVF Department at UNT. Some have stayed in touch and I always enjoy hearing from them. Those with passion, drive, and persistence have gone on to do some big things in the biz. Bud

H.W. Inauguration in 89. My wife Gail, son Kelly and I make the trip with Jody and his Texas Cowboys to D.C. and I had the pleasure of introducing both bands. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY’S RADIO? WHERE IS RADIO HEADED? We want to know what is on your mind. Let’s start a radio revolution.  Give us your opinion about today’s radio or whatever is on your mind at Rosekkkj@earthlink.net.

JO BUSSELL [ex KLDE FM/Mix 96.5/Metro Traffic/Clear Channel/Atlanta's Z93 and V103] (Houston, TX) Subject: KSBJ FM contact. I worked for KSBJ about 11 years ago before Troy and I moved to my hometown of Atlanta…and back after the station suddenly sold. That’s the only reason I left because that is one great station to work for. Maybe someday I’ll do some radio just for the fun of it. But, no time soon because there’s nothing open. I’d love to work for this station in Conroe but they recently had to cut back, too. But I’ve been talking to them for months. I’d really enjoy that!!

TRIVIA ANSWER: British pop band The Nashville Teens form in Weybridge, Surrey, England in summer 1962. They are perhaps best known for their 1964 single Tobacco Road a top 10 UK hit and a top 20 hit in the United States. The book Tobacco Road is a 1932 novel by Erskine Caldwell about Georgia sharecroppers. John D. Loudermilk writes the song Tobacco Road and first records it in 1960. While playing in Hamburg, Germany (as several British bands of the era do) The Nashville Teens back Jerry Lee Lewis on his Live at the Star Club Hamburg album which is widely considered one of the greatest live Rock and Roll albums ever.

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Sunday, I went to the Balcony Club and heard The Dave Burris Combo, there were only a few there, so I was able to talk to a few of the members when they went to take  a break. I noticed when I asked certain questions they looked at me like why did you ask that, but I only talked about music. There are lots of good talented musicians not played on the radio. Texas Slim has a new CD, That’s Who I Am on ITunes. Charles George

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [ex KRCS DJ] (Marshall, TX) Subject: Radio News the Times They R A Changin. Jim, good job on bring us No Brag Just FACT. “No brag, just fact” is sometimes said to be an old Texas saying, but it originated on the short-lived television western The Guns of Will Sonnett (1967). Will Sonnett (played by Walter Brennan) would tell old western stories and often say that he was the fastest gun in the west. Sonnett would then quickly add that his comments were “no brag, just fact.” CafePress.com I Love Texas Of course Texas is a great place! No brag, just fact. Thank you Leslie

WALTER BRENNAN (July 25, 1894 – September 21, 1974) Life gets tee-jus, don’t it?
