MOVE OVER HIP HOP HERE COMES HICK HOP Remember 1979 when we hear lots of Disco dance music on the radio? Times change. Along comes Rap and Hip Hop. The latest music sensation is Hick Hop which is a little bit backwoods and a little bit street southern sound with an urban beat. It’s Country (with) rap’s heavy bass about pickup-driving, beer-swillin’, good ole boys. Can you dig it baby? Country music singer-songwriter John Rich says:Just when you think everything’s been done in music, you look up and here’s a new amalgam. Lenny Cooper and Charley Farley are Hick Hop rappers on their music video Country Folks Anthem on location at Wooley’s in Mooreville, TN. Colt Ford, one of Hick Hop’s most popular artists says its fan base is the countriest of the country people.

TV NEEDS NEWS FACT CHECKERS Rumor of the day is should TV news have on-air fact checkers? When newspapers print incorrect news information they do print updates with correct information but they are hidden away in tiny blocks some place else in the newspaper. So, no one sees it. When we watch a TV anchor or reporter with incorrect news no one ever corrects it. Take CBS News and NBC News when they misidentify the Navy Yard shooter. USA Today‘s Rem Rieder argues that TV news should take cues from ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption and employ on-air fact checkers. ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser says: If you get something wrong, you ought to correct it right on the spot. If you don’t, you can be sure that many readers and viewers will take to Twitter to point themout.

CHUCK CASHMERE [ex KNUZ-1230] (San Diego-Carlsbad, CA) Regarding my tenure at KNUZ (1230)/KQUE (FM), Webb Hunt was my PD in 64/65. Arch hired me for part time in 1976 at KNUZ, then I went part time to KQUE after a couple of weeks where Paul was PD. I never knew about my ratings but as I understand they were ok. 76 staffers were Paul, Webb, Walt Hammock, Gray, and a couple of others I can’t remember. I enjoyed the work and people, hung around waiting for a full time job. When I found out the $$$ they were paying I hi-tailed it back to CA. But I loved radio, didn’t think I had much talent for it due to a limited education. CC

L.B. LYON [News Anchor KBNJ FM 91.7] (Dallas-Waxahachie-Red Oak, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio. Times are not good for an old fart in radio. Even the young guys are getting ousted. I decided to not leave this market (Dallas) because my family has established too many roots. Instead, I created a little radio niche for myself by preparing and broadcasting short news reports for smaller market stations that cannot afford their own news talent or department. At present I do the news for KVMV in McAllen, TX as well as KBNJ in Corpus Christi. I also do news reports for Leading Edge Radio Network (internet radio). I also prepare a one minute news that doubles as a call to prayer for Christian stations. I do this daily and have it on the air at prayerpoints.net, as well as radio stations in Dallas, McAllen, somewhere in Arizona and Danville, Pennsylvania. I do voice work when I can find the jobs and I also do feature stories (narration, interviews and production) forwww.faithteam.org. It keeps us old radio dogs busy. L.B.

DAVE DONAHUE [ex KTHT FM/KRLA-870] (Jasper, TX) Thanks Jim, Of course, add me to your email list. Much appreciated, you do a awesome job of keeping in the loop. I am reading a lot of your site now to catch up. Great stuff! First job, 1954 doing “God Block” and LIVE station ID’s (Thrill!) “Hey Mom, did you hear me on the radio?” *KVHL, Homer, Louisiana. Think I made twenty-five cents an hours, and that included vacuuming and emptying out the studios and offices on Sunday! *(Those calls don’t exist any longer) so who knows today what the little station is about). First full time vacation relief, KALT, Atlanta, Texas with the later country star, NAT STUCKEY. Also GEORGE JONES and I just missed each other in 59 in Jasper at KTXJ radio as ‘announcers’ and my first full time “Teen Time” afternoon show. Thanks Jim, I look forward to our communication. Dave Donahue, Johnny Knight, Mark O Marks, PJ Thomas

TRIVIA ANSWER: When given the opportunity to air this program in 1970, reports indicate that CBS President Bob Wood turns it down with these words: Preempt Doris Day? Are you out of your mind?. Monday Night Football is what Wood turns down in favor of the popular Doris Day variety show. MNF moves over to ABC with Howard Cosell, Frank Gifford, Don Meredith, Dan Dierdorf, Al Michaels and Dennis Miller. In 2006, the 1970 brainchild of ABC Sports president Roone Arledge, Monday Night Football, shifts to cable ESPN TV. To this day, MNF remains a prime-time staple that we love.

JOE FORD [former KLDE FM/KNUZ-1230/KILT-610] (Houston-Spring, TX) Subject: WYDS. You know what they say, Jim. Today’s receptionist is tomorrow’s Operations Manager! Unfortunately, it’s true. Several of you who worked the Houston market probably remember the story of the idiot who hired a girl because she was cute and looked good sitting at the front desk. A month later she was appointed music director! A couple of months after that, the station tanked. Management was replaced, she was replaced and in no time, the station switched formats! Gotta love it!

LAWRENCE J. PETER [The Peter Principle] In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence. Members are promoted so long as they work competently. Sooner or later they are promoted to a position at which they are no longer competent, and there they remain.
