CUMULUS DIAL GLOBAL DEAL SHAKES UP NY RADIO In 1997, Chief Executive Lew Dickey co-founds Cumulus. In 2011, it acquires Citadel for $2.4 billion and adds big-market radio stations. Cumulus buys Dial Global for $260 million in cash. But Cumulus spars with Clear Channel’s Premiere over future rights to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity radio shows. Cumulus renews Limbaugh but sends Hannity packing. Cumulus’ 440 stations is well behind Clear Channel’s 800. Cumulus-Dial combination creates a smaller competitor to Clear Channel’s Premiere Networks and Walt Disney’s ESPN Radio. Rumors have it that if Les Moonves spins off his CBS Radio division that Cumulus might snap it up in a jiffy. A recent report in the New York Post says that it could happen in the next 12 to 24 months.

THE RUSH IS ON It’s official. In January 2014, Clear Channel plans to move Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity from Cumulus WABC-770 to its WOR-710 in NYC. In the August 2013 PPM radio ratings, WOR-710 registers a 1.2 share, which is well behind WABC-770′s 2.7. WOR-710 plans a full rebranding with a new lineup. For WOR-710, Clear Channel registers domains www.NewYork710.com, www.NewYork710AM.com, www.NY710.com andwww.NY710AM.com. All of its domains redirect to its existing site. Both Talk stations repackage to grow their audiences. The addition of Limbaugh and Hannity features six hours of WABC-770′s daytime squad moving down the radio dial to WOR-710.

CHUCK CASHMERE [former KNUZ-1230] (San Diego-Carlsbad, CA) Subject: Go see Cal. Hi Jim thanks for the post on Cal (Worthington). I spent the better part of the last 20 yrs of my working life at his dealerships. With all the accolades about his business success I’m tempted to add this little bit of trivia. I feel some of todays hip hop slang ie: dawg emanated from the neighborhood surrounding his Long Beach, CA. dealership. The kids there grew up with “my dog spot,” It’s speculation on my part but it’s possible some of this vernacular got started there. Just an observation.

DAVE DONAHUE [ex KTHT FM, KRLA-870] (Jasper, TX) I am trying to remember memories from KTHT Houston 1957 or 58??? I was all summer vacation relief. Think Larry Kane? worked there, who else? Cannot remember. I did get to know Biff Collie of KNUZ, along with Newsman Cecil Tuck. Both of them would move to LA and I’d know Biff out there as he was doing some work for Peter Frank Studios/Stars International, where I was a producer in early sixties. Cecil would tip me on work at Pasadena’s KRLA (in receivership) and I’d work night shifts for Reb Foster, and one of my even today biggest hero’s, Bob Eubanks, who first brought the Beatles to the West Coast. Amazing time out there! Thanks Jim, I look forward to our communication. Dave Donahue, Johnny Knight, Mark O Marks, PJ Thomas

BILL HILL [principal license holder of KSET] (Beaumont, TX) Subject: All News. Jim, they don’t need radio salespeople. They need someone to develop mostly non radio people to sell the concept to non agency accounts. That’s what Total Traffic still does. At WOAI, there was one year when we were number 1 in billing for the entire year and 72% of our billing was direct. I wish I could consult them. It’s such an easy fix when you know how. The tools to manage it are knowing how to develop and monitor each salesperson in ways not usually used in radio. Shane has set up an excellent product with some real pros on the air. I listen often. They have some advertisers you don’t hear on other stations, but not nearly enough of them. I would also bet they are letting agencies dictate rate, which is a real copout. Crashing this format and being another music source with little or no personality or local identity is not the answer.

TRIVIA ANSWER: From 1954-57, Steve Allen is The Tonight Show’s first host. For 6 months in 1957, Jack Lescoulie & Al Collins host. From 1957–62 Jack Paar  hosts until he abruptly quits in a dispute. From 1962-92, Johnny Carson is the king of late night television. After Carson retires, from 1992-2009, Jay Leno takes over the late night desk. Briefly from June 2009 to January 2010 Conan O’Brien is host. From March 2010 to present Jay Leno returns as host. In 2014, when Leno’s contract ends Jimmy Fallon is its next host.

JAY WEST [ex KILT-610/KODA FM/KRIO-910] (Houston, TX) Subject: Jay West has recommended you on LinkedIn.
