ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

LONG TIME BBC JOURNALIST PASSES INTO THE NIGHT Journalist and broadcaster Alan Whicker’s BBC and ITV TV career bridges six decades. After he joins the British Army at the end of World War II, his stint as editor of British Army newspaper whets his appetite for journalism. In 1957 he allies with the BBC. Alan is best known for his long-running docudrama series, Whicker’s World, which airs from 1959 to 1988 on both the BBC and ITV. The series features Whicker reporting on the unusual and bizarre, interviewing all types of people from millionaires and monks to gangsters and dictators. During his career, Alan wins two Baftas: the Factual Personality Award in 1965 and the Richard Dimbleby prize in 1978. Alan Whicker dies at 87 from bronchial pneumonia.

GRETCHEN EXITS FOX FRIENDS Another female TV commentator who lays so easy on our eyes is Gretchen Carlson on Fox & Friends. Fox News Channel announces late Tuesday, July 9, 2013 that Elisabeth Hasselbeck replaces Gretchen as co-host on the its morning program, Fox & Friends. Elisabeth is a nice person to see on our TV sets but many of us grow accustomed to Carlson’s face during our morning coffee. Hasselbeck, who is the in house conservative voice on ABC’s The View joins Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade on the Fox News New York City set beginning in mid-September 2013. That’s when Carlson hosts her own teatime Fox TV show because Megyn Kelly moves to Primetime. Jenny McCarthy joins The View as a regular panelist when it begins its 17th season in fall 2013.

IMUS SWITCHES TEAMS IN PHILLY The revolving door of local hosts on Merlin News/Talk WWIQ FM (IQ 106.9) Camden/Philadelphia, PA may finally ease up a bit as it brings in the syndicated Imus in the Morning Talk show beginning on Monday, July 15, 2013. In May 2012, Merlin launches WWIQ FM with Philly’s Morning News host Program Director Al Gardner plus longtime Philadelphia TV anchor Larry Mendte. At the end of 2012, Mendte leaves the building. WPIX TV New York commentator Lionel is his replacement. In March 2013, Gardner exits. Prior to the switch, the syndicated Imus in the Morning Talk show has a long run in mornings on crosstown CBS News/Talk WPHT-1210. Don Imus’ Cumulus Media Networks program new time on WWIQ FM is from 6-9am.

TODAY’S TV ADS ARE LIKE ROTTEN TOMATOES Is it just me or do today’s TV ads repulse and upset your equilibrium, too? Who is in charge of promotions that allow such balderdash to flow through the eye of our TV sets that turns them into true idiot boxes? Today’s TV ads depict imbeciles, kooks and morons who look like rejects from society who perform silly deeds. Which TV ad disgusts you the most? These nauseating ads attempt to fill our minds with ideas of how society should percolate but none of it is real. Today’s nerdy TV ads are distasteful, obnoxious and offensive. What tries our souls the most is that the worst TV ads air over and over on all channels seven days a week. Every time one of those awful TV ads pops up, we snatch the remote control to find another similar ad.

Mike is a Texas native and has had a long & successful career. My Father, Jack Woods & I have had the pleasure to both work with Mike. Charlie & Harrigan, mercifully at times, introduced Mike on the air when he worked Mid-Days on KLIF in 1975. Mike was my Morning guy on KLUV-FM 20 years later. Mike is currently in Dallas working on air for Cumulus. Mike is real deserving of the hall and I would appreciate you voting and encouraging other voting members to do the same. JAY WEST (Houston, TX) I recall way, way back when I first started radio at XEL radio in Mexico City while still at the American High School. I was 7-10PM and took requests. This is even before rock ‘n roll was a thing. Phone rang, I answered and on the other end was a voice telling me…Hi, this is Audie Murphy, and wondered if you could play “Battle of New Orleans” for me. Of course, leery as I was, I told him to buzz off. He said, no really this is Audie Murphy and I am requesting a song. I hung up on him and went about my business. I thought his voice sounded familiar, but that’s about as far as it went. Next day I read in “The News”: (American language paper) that Audie Murphy is in town finishing up his latest movie. I had always been a huge Audie Murphy fan since the movie/book “To Hell and Back”…Audie the most decorated soldier in US history. Now I am sure it was really him. Oh well, what do expect from a 17 year old high school student. I’m sure others in the radio business have made similar asinine mistakes. — JAY WEST
