A subscription to one of the UK’s impressive investing and personal finance magazines can, with a bit of effort, educate you in finance and investing and yet they cost remarkably little.

Since the introduction of RDR or the Retail Distribution Review, which among other things banned the use of commission as a means of remunerating financial advisers, an increasing number of people have taken the responsibility of managing their own money themselves. This can be a fantastic option for some but it has pitfalls. The most significant being that financial services legislation, encompassing tax laws, can be extremely complicated and is susceptible to frequent change by populist politicians or the regulator the FCA.

What can an ordinary investor do to keep up with it all? If you can’t afford or really don’t want to use the services of an IFA, then one option is a relatively cheap subscription to one of the range of personal investment magazines targeted at the ordinary investor. There are several and they all cover a broad range of personal investing subjects from pensions/SIPPs, shares, investment trusts, funds, tax planning and wrappers etc.

Below is a quick introduction to them but what do you think? Are you a subscriber to any of these publications? Has it helped your investment knowledge and more importantly have you profited from it?

Share your views in the forum below but if you care to share a little more detail we’re looking for volunteers, people who subscribe to any of the magazines below to complete a short survey on their experience, that we’ll publish a later date. The purpose is to share your experience with others.

Every day, an awful lot is written and spoken about finance and investing. Much of it is incredibly boring, lots more is either meaningless or plain stupid, and most of it is a complete waste of your time.

Our aim is simple: to give you intelligent and enjoyable commentary on the most important financial stories, and tell you how to profit from them.

So how do we do that?

Firstly, by talking to thoughtful people who know their stuff. That means City professionals, fund managers, stockbrokers, industry experts, and the commentators that we respect. We have a wide range of financial professionals who write regularly for us, come to our monthly ‘Roundtable’ discussions, and who contribute their expertise to the ongoing MoneyWeek debates.

Secondly, by reading a huge amount of financial news and commentary every week. That means all the mainstream sources – press, websites and magazines – and many more specialised ones, such as broker reports, newsletters, newswires, trade journals and so on.

And finally, by writing articles that we would want to read ourselves, which means intelligent, thought-provoking, practical (as in, advice you can make money from) and entertaining, written in normal English.
