Why We Went: My parents love Greek food and I knew Adelphia Sports Bar, in downtown Charleston, West Virginia, would be the perfect place to take them for lunch. We even lucked out with a primo parking spot at a meter out front.
What We Had: I ordered the Saganaki (flaming cheese) for my parents to try because they had never had it. For lunch, they both souvlaki over a bed of rice (one chicken, one pork) and I opted for the Greek gyro with a side of hummus and pita bread. My mom also had a side Greek salad, which was just average in taste.
Something Special: The gyro was perfect. The meat was cooked to perfection, wrapped in fresh pita, seasonings in check, crisp lettuce, diced tomato, flavorful tzatziki (cucumber sauce), and red onion. The up charge to have hummus and pita bread rather than a typical side item was $2.50.
Noteworthy: Adelphia is a true sports bar and showcases TV's around the restaurant showing a variety of sporting events. It is "the" place in downtown Charleston to watch popular sporting events or big games, especially local ones, as everyone in the restaurant just cheers and bonds through the excitement.
Worst Part of the Meal: The flaming cheese was a big disappointment. I've had this dish in Greece as well as many other US cities and it is typically quite the production. In this case, a kitchen worker brought a round DIRTY tray to our table with a lemon wedge, plastic soufflé cup of the flammable liquid (brandy), and a small platter with the deep-fried feta cheese. He poured the brandy over the hunk of cheese and lit it, gave a light-hearted "Opa!" cheer that only we could hear, and left the dirty tray and all at our table. Flaming cheese is usually served with cut vegetables or at the very least, fresh pita bread. I had to ask my server for something to eat with the cheese which costs $1.50 extra for 6 tiny triangles of cold pita bread. What a disappointment! Why even bother having it on the menu?
What Needs Improvement: Service, bathroom cleanliness, dirty tables need cleaned timely, and charging extra for simple things that belong with the menu item.
