Duplin Winery
The Duplin Winery is the largest and oldest winery in the South. The Fussell family started this business in the 1970’s and it is still family owned and operated today. Brothers Dave and Jonathan work together to ensure that their award winning Muscadine winery continues to grow.
Rose Hill, North Carolina is Duplin Winery’s main location. Here you can find a bistro, retail shop, tours of the production facility, and wine tastings. As of June 2015, Duplin has added a second location in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
My fiancé, Blake, and I had the chance to visit Duplin Winery’s Myrtle Beach location. Jonathan welcomed us with open arms. He gave us a history of the winery, let us tour the facility, and partake in a wine tasting.
Lots To Offer
The Duplin Winery makes 43 different wines and a plethora of other products. Sweetzers are a sweet frozen treat with a slushy like consistency. All you need is a bag of Sweetzer mix and a bottle of the recommended Duplin wine to make them. I had the Jolly Juice during my visit and fell in love with it! We ended up buying a Jolly Juice kit to make at home.
Duplin also makes gourmet foods to go along with their wines. Their gourmet foods include jellies, dressings, crackers, BBQ sauce, and nuts. Impressively enough, Duplin makes fudge, too!
You can purchase all of these items at the North Myrtle Beach Retail Shop Monday-Saturday from 11Am-8PM.
Our Wine Tasting
By our count, there are 4 beautiful tasting rooms that accommodate around 25 guests. A Basic wine tasting is $5 and allows you to sample 10 wines. The Deluxe tasting is $10 and also includes crackers and dip (which is awesome!), a glass of wine afterwards, and you get to keep your glass. I definitely recommend the Deluxe tasting. Note that the Muscadine wines sampled change every 6 weeks. Tastings take place Monday-Saturday from 11AM-7PM.
Jonathan led our wine tasting and it was a blast. Blake and I had so much fun! Jonathan told stories that kept all of us laughing and we liked almost all of the wines that we sampled: Christmas Eve, Scuppernong Blush Reserve (most antioxidants), Christmas Wine, Frosty Frolic (this year’s Christmas special), Jolly Juice (Sweetzer), Toil and Trouble (Halloween wine), Carlos, Midnight Magnolia, Beaufort Bay, Naughty & Nice, Burgundy, and Pink Magnolia.
I love how diverse our tasting group was. There were couples, a bachelorette party, a guy who had just turned 21, and friends looking to have some fun on a rainy Monday afternoon. Duplin’s wine tastings are truly fun for everyone.
Special Offerings
The North Myrtle Beach location has two unique offerings. One is that visitors can watch the bottling process. This is the same set up that the Duplin Winery started with, which is really interesting to see. Jonathan let me go through the bottling process and it was awesome! The second, is that the winery has live music on the back patio from 4:30-7:30 daily. The patio is a great place to come and relax.
The Rose Hill location sees more than 100,000 visitors each year. They offer several special events including Murder Mystery Dinners, a Christmas Show, Valentine’s Day Dinner, and annual Grape Stomp Festival. All of their events sound like a blast. Heritage Club
If you love Duplin wine, sign up for their Heritage Club. This will give you a discount on all purchases, first access to new wines, and exclusive events. The cost is $45 per quarter and you will receive quarterly shipments of three Duplin wines.
The Heritage Club is a tight knit group that often travels together. They have even gone on cruises in the past.
Whether you are on vacation in Myrtle Beach or live locally, the Duplin Winery is worth a visit. Their Muscadine wines are awesome and you are sure to have a great time!
