Love stories, sometimes no matter how unrealistic they may get, are something that most of us love to watch. The very core of Bollywood is romance, a genre which continues to win hearts till date. Indian cinema has made several love stories, which linger in our hearts and minds for years. No wonder movies from the early 90s like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge and Kucch Kucch Hota hai are still telecasted on TV nearly every other Sunday.
Bollywood has made several heartwarming love stories ever since it was born. To include even fifty percent of those movies in the list is not possible. In no particular order and rank, here are a few Bollywood love stories that found a place in the heart of millions of viewers.
Maine Pyaar Kiya
The heartthrob Salman Khan and the beautiful Bhagyashri made their Bollywood Debut with this blockbuster that got them a permanent ticket to the film industry. Maine Pyaar Kiya gained brilliant ratings and reviews from all quarters. Sooraj Barjatya made his debut as a director, and the movie was produced under the Rajshri Productions banner. Prem (Salman Khan) and Suman (Bhagyashri) fall in love with each other but torn apart by clashes in their families. However, Prem is given a last chance by Suman’s father and then, of course, love wins in the end.
Ddlj (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge)
If there is a King of Romance, it is Shahrukh Khan. If there is a couple, who epitomize romantic relationships, it is SRK-Kajol, and if there is a movie, which probably can never be replaced by any other, it is DDLJ. The low budget movie got a tremendous breakthrough in Indian cinema and emerged as one of the greatest love stories ever made. Produced by Yash Chopra and directed by Aditya Chopra, DDLJ has broken nearly every cinematic record. Although the movie needs no introduction, here is a brief of the story in case you are one of those endangered species yet to watch it! Raj and Simran find love in Europe, only to be separated over Kajol’s arranged family engagement against her will, and then the protagonist winning his lady love despite all odds by winning the heart of her family. Beautiful movie!
Dil Toh Pagal hai
With the lead trio, SRK, Karishma Kapoor and Madhuri dixit, this is yet another blockbuster romantic movie from the King of Romance under the production banner of Yash Raj Films. Dil Toh Pagal Hai made several box office records with its warm and suspenseful story. Rahul (SRK) is a dancer and also the director of his dance troupe. Nisha, his best friend, who is a member Rahul’s troupe, is secretly in love with him. Rahul, however, falls in love with Pooja, who is already engaged to Ajay. Watch it to discover how love eventually wins over everything.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is one of the most successful love stories made by Dharma Productions, which became the highest grossing film of its year. It is a romantic comedy movie directed by Karan Johar with Shahrukh Khan and Kajol in main lead and Rani Mukherji in supporting role. It tells the tale of love and friendship. Your best friend is your true soul-mate. “Pyaar Dosti hai,” a quote from the movie which became a building block for so many love shayaris.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, popularly known as K3G, emerged as a major success, not only in the country but also overseas. The movie generated a collection of over 1.35 billion both domestically and internationally and went on to becoming the highest grossing film ever. Produced by Yash Johar and directed by Karan Johar, the movie Amitabh Bachchan, Hritik Roshan, Shahrukh Khan, Jaya Bachchan, Kajol and Kareena Kapoor in the lead roles. It centers on the love stories of Kajol and SRK, Hrithik and Kareena, both of which battle the adversities of a union of two people, who belong to opposite social and financial backgrounds.
Devdas
It is impossible to discuss love stories without a mention of Devdas, a masterpiece by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. We bet you need no introductory insight to this story!
Kal Ho Na Ho
A rom-com directed by Nikhil Advani as his debut, this 2003 movie stars Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta in the lead. Written by Karan Johar, the movie collected over 1.15 billion and won several national awards. Naina (preity) falls in love with Aman (SRK), who poses he is married already and convinces his best friend Rohit (Saif) to woo her instead.
Fanaa
Starring Amir Khan, Rishi Kapoor and Kajol, Fanaa won the hearts of a million viewers worldwide with its heartwarming story, which talks about love and the many sacrifices one makes for it. Kajol plays a blind girl, who falls in love with a tourist guide, Amir Khan. With several emotions involved, this movie is a must-watch.
Jab We Met
Jab We Met is a comedy love story from 2007, starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Dara Singh in the lead with many others. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, it tells the tale of two lovebirds, who meet as co-passengers on a train journey and despite the odds, without which a movie cannot run, marry each other eventually.
Jodha Akbar
Jodhaa Akbar, a historical Epic love story, was released on 15th of February 2008. The movie describes an untold hidden love story between the Mugal Emperor Akbar and his beloved queen and wife, Jodha Bai. The movie stars Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai and Sonu Sood in the lead roles. Produced and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the movie won several national awards. The movie also went on to being dubbed in Telugu and Tamil languages. Brilliant acting, directing and music were what made this movie stand out from other epic romance stories.
