Age-friendly Manchester Local Member Support
We are delighted to announce that Councillor Sue Cooley, who has been Lead Member for the Age-friendly Manchester / VOP programme since 2003, commenced her term as Lord Mayor at the beginning of this month. Councillor Mary Watson of Whalley Range Ward will be taking on the role as Lead Member for the Age-friendly Manchester programme. Councillor Watson also works with the team as part of the Age-friendly Whalley Range Steering Group, who are continuing to develop age-friendly initiatives throughout the Whalley Range Ward.

Age-friendly Research and Evaluation Framework launched
25th June saw the launch of the UK’s first evidence-based guide for age-friendly policy makes and practitioners.  Authored by Sophie Handler from Manchester University and the Age-friendly Manchester team, the guide sets out latest evidence, key resource and templates for the development of city strategies.

Job Opportunity: George House Trust Local Coordinator – Health, Wealth and Happiness Project
The Health, Wealth and Happiness Project is an innovative new project that seeks to address the social and financial exclusion that many older people living with HIV (OPLHIV) face. This post holder will be responsible for supporting and coordinating activities for OPLHIV locally. You will work collaboratively with the Project’s National Coordinator to ensure that local partnerships are robust and that referral pathways are clear in order to maximise access to the project for OPLHIV. Volunteer Peer Mentor and Befriender
Manchester Carers Forum is looking for volunteers for the Peer Mentoring and Befriending Project, to visit carers on a one to one basis and provide flexible support. You will be able to signpost to local services which may be of benefit to the carer, making them aware of the support available and help prevent isolation. Neighbourhood Coordinator, Oldham
Are you retired and live in Oldham? Help Intergen bring older and younger people together by bringing volunteers from the community in to three local schools.  Intergen will train, pay (an honorarium of £2000 per year) and support you while you meet some great people and make a contribution to your local community. Volunteer Opportunity – Volunteer Handyperson
Care & Repair are on the lookout for a Volunteer Handyperson. Volunteers will complete tasks alongside our HandyHelp Safety Operatives. Coal – exhibition
People’s History Museum, Left Bank, Spinningfields, Manchester M3 3ER
30 years on from the Miners’ Strike, the PHM presents Coal, an installation of paintings made as a tribute to the militancy and bravery of the miners and their families, by Nicholas Baldion. These strikers faced the venom of the media and the brutality of Thatcher’s state when they stood up against the destruction of an industry and their communities. Manchester and Salford in political fiction: from Disraeli to Christopher Eccleston

From drama to satire, the British public’s view of democracy has long been shaped by fiction.  Come and hear Professor Steven Fielding’s latest research on how the British have imagined their politics, from the parliament worship of Anthony Trollope to the cynicism of the BBC’s The Thick of It.  Fielding argues that dramas and fictions have performed a crucial if rarely noted role in the battle of ideas, in a way undreamt of by politicians. Ellen Wilkinson: From Red Suffragist to Government Minister

Ellen Wilkinson was the most famous, and certainly the most outspoken British female politician.  Born and bred in Manchester, she was a feminist and a socialist.  In 1924, when Ellen first took her seat in parliament, she was the only woman on the Labour benches and one of only four women in the House of Commons.  Join Dr Paula Bartley as she examines what it was like to be in such a minority in parliament and find out more about Ellen’s achievements. +Culture Shots is a week-long series of free events offering the hospital community the opportunity to be enthused by culture. Our ambition is to encourage individuals to find out why culture works, by discovering how the expertise within Manchester museums and galleries can be used to improve professional practice as wells patient and staff health and well-being. Cultural organisations from across the city will be taking their collections into the hospitals public spaces, whilst artists and musicians will be running drop in workshops. Advice, Support and Information Books to Go – Home Delivery Service
Books to Go provides a home delivery service for Manchester residents who have limited mobility, a visual impairment or any difficulty leaving their home and visiting their local library.  When you join you will be asked if you prefer audio books, large print, DVDs or ordinary print, also what types of book you enjoy.  Experienced staff will choose books to you preference and deliver them to your own home free of charge. Community Consultation: Making Manchester Safer
Manchester’s Community Safety Partnership is in the process of refreshing its strategy to tackle crime and disorder across Manchester. A number of priorities have been identified and the Partnership is keen to consult with residents to ensure that these priorities meet local needs and concerns. Manchester Care and Repair’s handyperson service is available for small works to help an older person keep their home safe and warm. The service is free and is usually able to respond with a couple of weeks (the service does not cover the cost of materials). Home from Hospital Service

Care and Repair offer low level support to any older person (over 60) who has recently been in hospital or attended A&E and is not eligible for support from Adult Social Care. Support includes practical tasks, benefits checks and applications, finding relevant support services and telephone support. Donate Your Unwanted Furniture and Support ‘Care & Repair’
Thinking of buying new furniture but don’t know what to do with your old items? Moving home and need to get rid of anything? Care & Repair have teamed up with CT Home to offer you FREE COLLECTION of your quality used furniture and household appliances. If you are interested in donating, please call 0161 745 7588 and quote Care & Repair. CT Home will collect anywhere across Greater Manchester and sell the furniture at their warehouse in Salford.

Independent Living Support Service
The Care & Repair caseworker service has recently been awarded funding by the Big Lottery Fund to expand its service in Manchester. This free home-visiting service provides short term assistance, benefits checks and applications, signposting and information to older people of any housing tenure who want to remain in their own home. East Manchester Advocacy
The Generation Project provides an Advocacy service in East-Manchester for those aged 55 and over. Care & Repair Energy Support
Manchester Care & Repair has recently expanded its BIG Lottery funded Independent Living Support Service by recruiting an Energy Support Worker. Visiting clients in their own homes, they will provide advice on improving the energy efficiency and thermal comfort of the home, as well as addressing any fuel poverty issues. If you’re struggling to pay for your fuel costs and/or would like some energy efficiency advice, call 0161 872 5500 to enquire.

People First Dementia Support Service
Free support available to people aged 55+ living in Manchester who are exhibiting signs of dementia, memory loss or confusion. The service provides support in a range of areas including prompting upkeep and management of the home, claiming benefits, access to care and other local services and assistance with medical appointments.
