Save the Date: Age Friendly Neighbourhood Coordination Event
Monday 20 July 2015 at 1.00pm
Friends Meeting House, Mount Street, Manchester
The Age Friendly Manchester team is pleased to announce the return of the popular Neighbourhood Coordination meetings which will reconvene and meet twice yearly. The group will once again bring together frontline staff from a wide range of services and will present an opportunity for partners to share local successes and news. Previously participants largely represented the AFM Locality Networks but an opportunity exists to open this group to a wider audience including partners with a ‘community of interest’ around the age agenda.
Participants will be invited to learn about national developments, receive updates on the AFM programme and to hear about what services are available to older residents living across the city. As part of the event participants will be asked for their views and input on a new wellbeing model for older people that is being developed. It is important to identify all the things that our health and care system in Manchester needs to be promoting, supporting and delivering which will enable older people to remain active, happy and healthy in later life.

North West Men in Sheds – Meet the Shedders Event

UK Men in Sheds Association in conjunction with Age UK Tameside and Age UK Oldham, has organised its first North West Regional Networking event for Men in Sheds in being held on:
Wednesday 17 June 2015 at Manchester’s Deaf Centre, Crawford House, Booth Street East, Manchester M13 9GH
The principle aim is to raise awareness and share practice as well as recognise the benefits of men in sheds for shed leaders, men and their communities
The event will be mixture of presentations, interactive workshops, demonstrations and exhibitions stalls. It will be of interest to; existing men in sheds, men’s groups, those wanting to set up men in sheds or other organisations interested in men’s health and ways of combating social isolation and loneliness in men

East Manchester Spring into Summer Festival
Huge thanks go to all those involved in the first Age Friendly Spring into Summer Festival which was held in East Manchester from 16 to 30 May. Over 30 different partner organisations supported the festival by either hosting or promoting events. The Festival launched with a fabulous Open Day at the beautiful Clayton Hall, with over 60 people joining in activities uncovering the Halls secrets from a time gone by. Other events which took place over festival fortnight included; a spectacular Free Open Day at the new East Manchester Leisure Centre in Beswick, Dementia Friendly Swimming Sessions, Walking Football and Fish Chips, an introduction to the new Men’s Shed Project in Openshaw, a Family Fun Day at the Wells Centre in Clayton, Creative Crafts at the Libraries and Nordic Walking. The Festival closed with a Community Lunch at Resurrection and St Barnabas Church in Beswick. Over 2000 What’s On Guides were distributed across east Manchester to publicise the festival and the local AFM Networks who organised the festival will meet shortly to review it’s success.

New report highlights the needs of older lesbian, gay and bisexual communities in Manchester
The State of the City for Manchester’s Older Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Communities, published by LGBT Foundation, focuses on the needs of the 7,650 older people living in Manchester who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB). Sadly, half of all LGB people over 55 feel that their sexual orientation has or will have a negative impact on getting older. The report presents the evidence on inequalities related to health and the wider determinants of health, explores the inclusion of older LGB people’s needs in service provision across Manchester.
North City Nomads
The idea of developing a project which would reach high numbers of older people who would benefit from improved interaction and social connectivity, was prompted following discussions about how the North Manchester Age Friendly Locality Networks could work collectively, in a practical way, to begin to address the very profound issue of loneliness amongst older people. As a result of these discussions a Membership Group has been set up for people living in North Manchester.
Over 200 people have registered to become members of North City Nomads and on 18 June the group will embark on their first ever outing. Five vehicles will leave North Manchester in convoy on a trip to the beautiful coastal resort of Southport. With further trips planned for the year ahead please do spread the word and encourage people to register with the group. The Life of the City: Manchester City Centre – an Age-Friendly Neighbourhood?
Researchers from the Manchester School for Architecture are working on a study about the advantages and disadvantages of living close to the city centre for older people. The research is being undertaken for Manchester City Council and will be used to inform the city’s provision for older people. Lost Gardens Found
Age Friendly Thursday Late at Manchester Art Gallery

Following the success of two previous Thursday Lates events, a group of older people are taking over the gallery once again, based on The Lost Gardens currently on display outside the Gallery and our House Proud exhibition. There will be art, stories, music, gardens, food and much more. Curators tour of House Proud will begin at 5.30 p.m. Do put the date in the diary and come and join us on 11 June.

Dr Suzy Pilkington, a researcher at The University of Manchester, would like to invite you to take part in a study to find out how the immune system in your skin changes as you age. This would involve a one-off visit which would last 60 minutes, at a date and time of your choice. The visit would take place at Salford Royal Hospital in Eccles and would involve four small skin samples being taken from your upper buttock/lower back area. Transport For Sick Children is a team of dedicated volunteer drivers who give up their time and use their own cars to make a difference to sick and needy children in Manchester. Our volunteers are keen to use their free time to help families with sick children, who often have complex health needs, get to crucial health and hospital appointments. Our volunteer drivers take the accompanied child, wait until treatment is finished and then take them home.. All children are referred to us by professional health workers. People First Volunteer Befriending Scheme
We are recruiting volunteer befrienders for our scheme in Hulme and Moss Side. Our volunteers visit adults aged 55 years and over to help reduce loneliness and social isolation. We provide a full training package, reasonable out of pocket expenses and support to find permanent employment or other volunteering opportunities. Due to working with vulnerable adults we will ask you to complete a full DBS, which we will pay for. Previous experience is not required. INTERGEN Burnage
Intergen is looking for retired people in the Burnage area who would like to volunteer an hour or so a week in a local primary or secondary school. Share your skills and experience with young people and help to break down the generation barriers and give the children a real sense of community. Current volunteers are helping with a variety of school clubs, offering one to one help with reading and introducing young people to new (or old) skills. To mark the 71st anniversary of the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy, one of the most significant military campaigns of the Second World War, discover personal stories from IWM’s collections. Hear the story of Royal Marine Jim Baker as he landed at Juno Beach on 6 June 1944, and learn how Sapper Stanley Charles Donnison cleared beach defences to help the Allied forces land. Learn more about the Second World War through the stories of prisoners of war like RAF officer Oliver Philpott, who used a wooden vaulting horse to escape from the Stalag Luft 3 prison camp, and Ronnie Horner, who was forced to work on the infamous Thailand-Burma railway.

Building the great monuments of Rapa Nui (Easter Island)

Based on fieldwork on the island by Professor Colin Richards, an archaeologist at The University of Manchester, this talk will explore the social significance of the range of volcanic materials that are used in the construction of the ceremonial platforms (ahu), including the statues (moai) and topknots (pukao). Discover Peace Trail

Interested in looking at Manchester in a different way? The City Council is a partner in a European funded project that has developed a new Manchester City Centre Peace & Justice Trail. The Trail is available in a small booklet / website and it outlines some of the people, ideas, movements and organisations that have brought about some of the major social developments in Manchester’s history. Relive the events of Peterloo, the campaign for the vote, the abolition of slavery, the birth of trade unions and the co-operative movement and the struggle for a just and more tolerant city, country and world. We are keen to get the views of people from all ages and the day will also include free refreshments and lunch. The next two sessions are: 15th June and 20th July at Lowry Lodge, Shrewsbury Street, Old Trafford, M16 9AJ. We meet from 1.30 – 3.00pm. Do you know someone who enjoys singing or listening to people sing and would like to get out more?We are members of two groups of local people who sing regularly… and we love it! We want to reach out to older people who might struggle to get out and we want to invite you to sing along with us and enjoy the pleasures we all get from singing as part of a group. We meet once a month, and we’re getting out and about to different venues to help more people to find us. Singing for an hour and then tea and cake. There’s no formal charge, but you’re welcome to make a donation towards costs, such as refreshments and transport. Hear why Saranda Bogujevci, who escaped from Kosovo to Manchester, won the Anne Frank Award for Moral Courage and discover how aid worker Emma Kay helped people fleeing from NATO air strikes on Albania and Macedonia in 1999. Learn about settling into a different country through the stories of Alice Brand, one of 250,000 Belgians arriving in Britain during the outbreak of the First World War, and Celia Horwitz, whose parents sent her from Nazi Germany on the Kindertransport. Inter-Generational Climate Change Learning Project
17, 18 and 19 June
Eco teams in Manchester schools are learning about climate change and working hard to communicate the issues with each other and adults in their communities.
Pupils are exchanging ideas with parents and grandparents. They want to plan and take action on climate change. In the process they are gaining science knowledge and skills in expressing their views, writing persuasively, in self-organising and family learning.
Young people want adults to engage and join them on practical inter-generational learning projects, including a ‘Carbon Classroom’ in the Manchester Arndale Centre

From posters to plates to pipes, the exhibition includes an object from every general election, from 1900 to 2010. Content will be dictated by events, with displays updated daily. Voices of Kosovo in Manchester

In 1999 the most serious humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War II erupted in the Balkans. Kosovo ethnic Albanians were airlifted to Manchester in an unprecedented British evacuation programme. Hear personal stories of a community fleeing from ethnic cleansing, their arrival in the UK, and the impact it had on both the people of Manchester and those who arrived as refugees. A Manchester Aid to Kosovo (MaK) project, exhibition curated by James Walmsley. Suitable for adults and young people.

Advice, Support and Information New free leaflet: Vitamin D and sunlight
This new leaflet for the general population offers guidance on safe sun exposure, diet and vitamin D supplements if necessary. Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are very common in Manchester, mainly because of lack of sunlight and exposure to it. Those over 65 years are in one of the high risk groups. This leaflet has been endorsed by David Regan, Director of Public Health, Manchester City Council. Maximising the Benefits of Passivhaus: A Guide to Supporting Older Occupants
Living in cold and damp homes can exacerbate health problems prevalent in the older population such as heart and respiratory disease. Homes built to Passivhaus standard, such as those recently refurbished by Eastlands Homes, now part of One Manchester, at Erneley Close in Longsight, provide a warm, dry environment with stable temperatures to reduce health problems and dramatically reduce fuel bills. The University of Manchester Institute for Collaboration Research on Ageing, Eastlands Homes and the Housing LIN have published ‘Maximising the Benefits of Passivhaus: A Guide to Supporting Older Occupants’ to help residents adapt to life in their refurbished homes.
