MESA, Ariz. — A baby boy was born without eyes to an Arizona family.
Richie Lopez is 3 months old and due to a very rare condition, does not have eyes. His mother, Kelly Lopez, told KTVK that she had a completely normal pregnancy and ultrasounds never hinted otherwise.
Hours after Richie’s birth, Lopez became concerned that her son had not opened his eyes.
The hospital staff originally thought his face was swollen from birth, but thirteen days later an MRI revealed that he was born without eyes.
Doctors have told the family that Richie was born with optic nerves, keeping the hope alive for him to see one day.
“That would be amazing,” his mother said. “I do hope that one day that they’ll be able to either grow an eye or transplant an eye.”
