A Pennsylvania State Police trooper was forced to fire at a suspect during a car chase on Route 222, officials said.

The pursuit began around 7 a.m. Sunday in the northbound lanes of Route 222 in Ephrata Township, Lancaster County, near the border with Berks County.

The accused, Willie Morant of Lancaster, led police on a pursuit and then attempted to run down several officers, authorities said.

That's when, police said, the trooper fired at the suspect's car.

Morant, 44, was not struck by the gunfire, and no one was seriously injured during the pursuit, police said.

The suspect was apprehended, charged with aggravated assault and committed to the Lancaster County Prison on $100,000 bail. He was also driving the vehicle without the owner's consent and had an active bench warrant in Lancaster County, police said.

State police troopers from both the Lancaster- and Reading-based troops, as well as from the Lancaster city, Ephrata, West Earl and New Holland police departments participated in the pursuit.

Six police vehicles sustained moderate to disabling damage, police said.
