Anyone looking to provide a caring home to a cat in need can do so for free through the end of the coming weekend.

Humane Pennsylvania announced Wednesday that it will continue its "Free to a Great Home" adoption program through Sunday, October 16.

Until then, cats two years and older can be adopted for free from the organization's shelters in Reading and Lancaster.

Adoption application policies still apply, as do the regular adoption benefits, including some vaccinations, de-worming medication, and micro-chipping.

The emergency adoption program was put in place on September 28 after the shelters' population of cats reached a critical level.

In the program's first five days, 121 cats were adopted. That's eight more than were adopted in all of September.

For more information about the program, you can contact the Humane Society of Berks County at 610-921-2348, or the Humane League of Lancaster County at 717-393-6551.
