Bushcraft is all about learning to use the natural resources we all have around us to thrive in the great outdoors. This course goes from the basics of fire lighting and water purification to wilderness cooking around camp fires and many other bushcraft topics such as tree identification, weaving and shelter building. This is a fun, active six-session bushcraft experience with all participants receiving a certificate of completion at the end.
The course is designed for 11—15 years olds and includes:
Day 1—Survival situations and fire lighting
Day 2—Wild food, baking and tree ID
Day 3—Fire construction, signal fires, weaving and survival challenge
Day 4—Tracking, shelter building and charcoal drawing
Day 5—Water purification and filters
Day 6—Survival skills summary and food preparation
Outdoor Escape! The Hyde Park Summer School, Isis Education Centre, Hyde Park, London, W2; Mon 4 Aug—Sat 9 Aug; Mon—Thu 10am–3pm, Fri 10am—Sat 9am (overnight); £200
Supervised by the education team, this week-long holiday programme aimed at 12 to 16-year-olds is chock-full of fun and educational outdoor games and activities, including bush craft, horse riding, boating, swimming, environmental studies, photography and horticulture.
On the last day you stay overnight in the park, cooking your own dinner in a wood-fired outdoor pizza oven before setting humane traps for a variety of nocturnal creatures and taking a walk as dusk falls to listen for bats with bat detectors. An early start on Saturday morning will provide time to identify the small mammals or moths you’ve caught, before breakfast and heading back home. This summer school will give your teenager a chance to relax, learn and make new friends as they uncover, discover and explore nature and new outdoor activities as well as new ways of enjoying their Royal Parks!

How did Peter Pan get from Bird Island in the Serpentine to the magical shores of the Long Water in Kensington Gardens? Join the Isis Education Centre team at the Royal Parks Foundation on an interactive walk and discover how the magical boy made this perilous journey.
Walkers are encouraged to dress up, feel the magic and get in the mood as we look at Bird Island, Peter Pan’s statue — and avoid Captain Hook! Suitable for children and adults of all ages willing to go on an adventure, hear a good tale and use their imagination to create a little magic.
