American Heart Association appoints Gewitz
THE FOUNDERS AFFILIATE OF THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION recently appointed MICHAEL H. GEWITZ to its eight-state affiliate board of directors for a two-year term.
Gewitz is physician-in-chief and chief of pediatric cardiology at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. He is also professor and vice chairman of pediatrics for New York Medical College and vice president of Children’s and Women’s Physicians of Westchester L.L.P.
“Through his continued support of our efforts, including the National American Heart Association’s pediatric cardiology committees and local support in our Westchester region, Dr. Gewitz has demonstrated his commitment to improving the lives of people in his community,” said Michael Weamer, AHA Founders Affiliate executive vice president. “Now, as a member of our board, he will leverage his expertise to help make a significant impact on heart health and wellness across our eight-state region.”
American Health magazine named Gewitz one of the “Best Doctors in America” and he has been included in every issue of the “America’s Best Doctors” publications, as well as New York magazine’s “Best Doctors in New York.” He was also a driving force behind the campaign to build the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center.
Gewitz is past chairman of the executive committee of the American Heart Association’s Council of Cardiovascular Disease in the Young and past chairman of its committee on rheumatic fever, endocarditis and Kawasaki disease.
Prior to coming to Westchester in 1983, he was the founding director of the echocardiography program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which followed completion of pediatric residencies at the hospital and at the Hospital for Sick Children in London and a pediatric cardiology fellowship at Yale University.
“It is an honor to contribute to the mission of the American Heart Association, particularly through their initiatives to improve the cardiovascular health of children,” Gewitz said. “The American Heart Association is committed to building a healthier generation of children and I look forward to being an integral part of that effort.”
New appointments at Bristal at Armonk
THE BRISTAL AT ARMONK, an assisted living community, has announced the appointments of JUAN ADROVER as dining room manager, CLEMENT WALSH as housekeeping supervisor and JESSICA OLIVER as administrative assistant.
Prior to joining The Bristal, Adrover, a resident of Port Chester, was an assistant manager at Atria Senior Living in Rye Brook. He was also the dining room manager at Atria Senior Living in Briarcliff Manor.
Walsh was assistant executive of housekeeping at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City for six years before his new position at The Bristal. He received his bachelor’s degree in hospitality management at New York City College of Technology.
Prior to The Bristal, Oliveras, a resident of Armonk, worked at Atria Senior Living in Rye Brook.
Simon names new director of business development
SIMON, a global leader in retail real estate, recently appointed JUDD S. MOHEL of Bayside, as area director of business development for The Westchester and The Galleria at White Plains.
In his new role, Mohel will leverage his 14 years of advertising, sales and marketing experience to “position The Westchester and The Galleria at White Plains as ideal destinations for local businesses to enhance their image and increase brand awareness to qualified consumers through on-mall media, event sponsorships and cross promotions,” according to a press release. His day-to-day responsibilities will include identifying potential clients and partners and building solid relationships, resulting in revenue generating opportunities. He will be based out of The Westchester’s office in White Plains.
Most recently, Mohel was regional sales manager for Eye Corp Media, where he cultivated relationships with education, health care, retail and government clients and agency partners and increased business with strategic, solution-based programming. Mohel’s background also includes serving as senior account executive for World Wrestling Entertainment and account manager for Hearst’s Veranda magazine.
Mohel holds a bachelor’s degree in arts and science from Adelphi University.
Mount Kisco Medical Group adds to its team
The MOUNT KISCO MEDICAL GROUP has added four physicians to its medical team in Jefferson Valley. They are:
• LAN PHAM received her medical degree in ophthalmology from Tufts University School of Medicine. She completed an internship at Lenox Hill Hospital and an ophthalmology residency at New York Medical College. Pham is board certified in ophthalmology. She has privileges at Northern Westchester Hospital.
• MEGAN PIERCE is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and specializes in laparoscopic gynecological surgery. Pierce attended University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed her medical education at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She completed her residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. She is affiliated with Hudson Valley Hospital Center.
• WENDY MANOWITZ received her medical degree from New York Medical College and completed her pediatric internship and residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Children’s Hospital at Montefiore and Weiler Hospital. Manowitz was board certified in pediatrics in 2004. Her hospital affiliations include Hudson Valley Hospital Center and Northern Westchester Hospital.
• WILLIAM M. ZURHELLEN received his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College and completed his internship and residency in pediatrics at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Zurhellen is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric advanced life support. He has hospital privileges in Hudson Valley Hospital Center and Westchester Medical Center.
HGAR raises funds for Make-A-Wish
THE HUDSON GATEWAY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS, an organization with 9,000 real state professionals, recently raised $7,949.50 for Make-A-Wish Hudson Valley by holding garage sales throughout Westchester, Rockland and Orange counties.
Realtors donated items from their homes to sell to the public and all monies raised went directly to the Tarrytown-based charity that serves the lower Hudson Valley area.
“We are deeply grateful to the agencies of HGAR who participated in the garage sales. Their hard work and generosity will make it possible for us to grant a child’s one true heartfelt wish,” said Tom Conklin, Make-A-Wish Hudson Valley CEO.

LIU president receives honor
KIMBERLY R. CLINE, president of Long Island University in Brookville, Brooklyn and Westchester, has been honored as a 2014 Distinguished Leader in Education by Education Update.
Since becoming president in 2013, Cline has led LIU through a transformational process to provide students with an education that combines a solid grounding in liberal arts and sciences with real-world, experiential learning.
The notable achievements that distinguish Cline’s leadership at LIU include:
• Establishing the LIU Promise Initiative that pairs incoming students with personal success coaches who serve as a single point of contact — from academic counseling to financial aid, student life and career preparation — providing an advocate and trusted guide.
• Launching a cross-disciplinary emphasis on entrepreneurialism through multiple initiatives such as the opening of five student-run businesses and partnering with a Long Island venture capital company.
• Leveraging the opportunities offered by the region’s strongest industries by creating a host of career-ready programs in entrepreneurship, financial engineering, alternative investments, fashion merchandising and equine management, among others.
• Originating a UN Ambassador lecture series that allows students to learn directly from the most influential world leaders of our age.
• Encouraging talented high school students to explore career paths through the new Summer Honors Institute@LIU, which offers a weeklong, behind-the scenes view of some of the most popular careers.
• Recognizing the importance of athletics by introducing golf, track and field, wrestling, fencing, swimming and other programs.
In addition to these student initiatives, Cline was recognized by Education Update for strengthening university operations by focusing on institutional effectiveness, conducting a comprehensive strategic planning process and integrating all major enrollment service areas.
Arborists receive certification
Five members of ALMSTEAD TREE & SHRUB CARE CO., a family-owned business that is celebrating its 50th anniversary, recently earned the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification credential by successfully completing the course and passing the exam administered by the International Society of Arboriculture and the local chapter of ISA.
The arborists are KEN ALMSTEAD and DAN DALTON of the New Rochelle branch office; TIM KATENKAMP of the Hawthorne office; RYAN DUFF of the North Haledon, N.J. office; and GARY NORMAN of the Stamford, Conn., office.
The credentialing program is voluntary and designed to test an individual’s degree of knowledge in the field of arboriculture. The ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification is the only ISA credential that requires individuals to take a designated course. To earn the qualification upon completion of the course, individuals must pass an exam that includes both a written and field component to test their knowledge of tree risk assessment. To maintain the qualification, individuals must take the course and pass the exam every five years.
