Students compete with business in mind
Nearly 50 students at Fairfield University have spent most of the 2013-2014 academic year preparing for the annual business plan competition. Advice comes from faculty members and business experts, including BlumShapiro partner Tom Walsh and manager Patrick Dunleavey.
The Fairfield University Business Plan Competition was created three years ago by the Charles F. Dolan School of Business. This year, teams will compete in two categories: the venture track for new businesses with a profit focus and the social track for new organizations with a social mission. Each category competes separately with its own judges and prizes; a total $20,000 will be awarded. The final judging takes place April 14 at Fairfield University.
Numerically minded health

The Get Healthy CT campaign provides free screenings for body mass index, blood pressure and blood sugar. There are two free remaining BMI, blood pressure, and blood sugar screenings in Bridgeport: Feb. 19: 2-7 p.m., Golden Hill United Methodist Church, 210 Elm St.; and Feb. 27: 5:30-7:30 p.m., United Congregational Church, 877 Park Ave.

O’Shaughnessy elevates three to partner status
Stamford-based O’Shaughnessy Asset Management, a research-based, equity money management firm with approximately $6.5 billion in assets under management, announced the promotions of Scott Bartone, Patrick O’Shaughnessy and Ashvin Viswanathan to partner/ portfolio manager.
In their new roles, the three are responsible for investment strategy research, product development and client service. With their appointments to equity partner, one-third of OSAM’s employees – and 84 percent of the investment management team – are now equity partners.
O’Shaughnessy Asset Management provides a broad range of equity portfolios to institutional investors and the high-net-worth clients of financial advisory firms and independent financial advisers. The firm also manages mutual funds in the U.S. and serves as a sub-adviser to a family of Canadian mutual funds through the Royal Bank of Canada.
Brody Wilkinson opens New York City office
Southport-based law firm Brody Wilkinson P.C. has opened an office in New York City at 420 Lexington Ave in the Graybar Building at Grand Central Terminal. The decision to establish the office was in response to the increasing number of clients the firm serves, particularly in the trusts and estates area, who reside or work in New York City and the roster of Brody Wilkinson attorneys who are admitted to practice in New York.
“We are enthusiastic about our growth and the opportunities that we believe a physical presence in New York City will present for the firm,” said principal Peter T. Mott. Principal Robert L. Teicher will now divide his time between the Connecticut and New York City offices. Teicher practices in the areas of estate planning, estate and trust administration, taxation and business law.
Crunch time
Nick Loeb joined Greenwich-based Withers Bergman attorney Jeffrey Blomberg and regional entrepreneurs to discuss his journey and marketing success. The networking event was held recently at the Delamar Greenwich Harbor. Loeb is founder and chief marketing officer of Ohio-based The Crunchy Condiment Co.
Berchem Moses & Devlin grows with merger
Berchem, Moses & Devlin, P.C., with offices in Milford and Westport, has merged with Norwalk firm Kimmel & Kimmel L.L.C. and has also added five other lawyers practicing in diverse areas. The additions are significant in the growth of Berchem, Moses & Devlin’s Westport office and in the expansion of its municipal practice.
Joining the firm are Eugene M. Kimmel, as senior counsel; Gregory S. Kimmel, as senior partner; Peter V. Gelderman, a Fairfield land use/municipal lawyer, as of counsel; and Ansonia Corp. counsel John P. Marini, as an associate. Also joining the firm as associates are Rebecca Goldberg and Christopher J. Sugar in the labor practice; and Lynn A. Kirshbaum in the education department.
Kimmel & Kimmel has concentrated in the areas of real estate transactions, divorce and family law issues, personal injury matters and criminal law.
Prenguber takes naturopathic reins at UB
Dr. Marcia Prenguber has been appointed the new dean of the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine, effective March 1.
Prenguber previously served as president of the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education. She is past director of Integrative Care, Goshen Center for Cancer Care in Indiana and the co-founder of the Naturopathic Post-Graduate Association, a naturopathic residency organization.
