The main topic today is a new Tropical Depression Kiko west of the Philippines. This area brought heavy rain showers and thunderstorms across the Philippines over the weekend claiming the lives of at least two people in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines. One landslide forced the evacuation of about 300 families in Visayas and there was numerous reports of flooding across the country including in Manila where several parts of the city became water logged from storms on Sunday.

PAGASA at 10AM local made this statement on the storm.

These weather systems are expected to bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms in Mimaropa, Visayas and

Mindanao which may trigger flashfloods and landslides. Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Bicol Region will experience light to moderate rains becoming heavy during thunderstorms.

Now this storm is tracking North West taking a very similar path as Tropical Storm Jebi. You could actually call this one Jebi part II because it is taking a similar path and will have many of the simialer impacts on Vietnam and Hainan. With that said the worst hit areas will likely be about 100km south of where Jebi hit due to the slight strengthening of the Pacific high over China and the fact the storm is originating farther south emerging in to the South China Sea from Mindanao vice Southern Luzon like Jebi.

Heavy rainfall and flooding can be expected in Vietnam by Wednesday. With the area already saturated due to Jebi this new storm will increase the risk of yet more flooding in the country. Ha Noi will see temperatures in the high 30s with afternoon thunderstorms developing on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday scattered showers and gusting winds are in the forecast.

Also in the tropics a new area is brewing east of Guam. Many global models develop this in to something impressive by the weekend with GFS picking up on a new Tropical Depression by Wednesday at the earliest. Also the GFS model run at 00Z indicated a likely super typhoon impacting Taiwan by Tuesday of next week. This is still long range but the GFS has been rather persistent in this storm and with the genesis area now visible on satellite imagery we can be a little more confident in the fact that something will be forming through the end of the coming week.

Also in today’s video update we talk about thunderstorms brewing over Japan and what the impacts will be from those.  Kagoshima prefecture in western Japan has been hit the hardest recording up to 282mm of rainfall in the past 24hrs. 180 of that was in just a 3hr period. Tokyo could see a scattered storm today while Okinawa will continue to anticipate sunny skies with temperatures in the 30s.
