On this installment of 40ForKolo, we get to know, Flexenbaum, the 20 year old Producer/Dj out of Boca Raton, Florida.

.

While being a Kolossus artist for him is humbling, he still finds motivation in the team, and works to make sure he can keep up with what Kolossus is all about.

.

Founder of Kolossus Records, XED, talks with Flexenbaum:

.

XED: -So what got you into music Flex?

.

Flex: -Since I was a kid, my dad had been showing me Grateful Dead. Yes, The who, and everything in between, so I had the dance and funk in me from a young age. Haha

.

XED: -Nice! So where in the world did your name, “Flexenbaum” come from?

.

Flex: -My buddy, Dadi just hassled me every day cause my name is Feigenbaum so he’d come in my room while I was learning to use Ableton asking, “YOU FLEXIN? FLEXENBAUM RIGHT NOW?” After a while it just ended up sticking with all my roommates so I just chose it. The music’s more about the tunes than the name to me I suppose.

.

XED: -Ableton user over here! Now tell us what gives you inspiration when you are about to work on a new song?

.

Flex: -I’m honestly drawing inspiration from everywhere, and the internet is such an awesome place right now because of that. I can have inspiration from sitting in my backyard and listening to trees rustle and make natural rhythms and shit or I can listen to a producers song from Finland and get inspiration from there too (shouts out to all our Finnish homies from Kolossus to you <3). I hear something new or original or really good and I just sit there jamming out like, DAMN I GOTTA MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS and end up making a weird version all of my own.

.

XED: -Cool, cool. So you mix at a lot of events, and one of which, you’ve done for a fashion show in Florida. So would you say you prefer Djing tracks more, or creating them?

.

Flex: -DJing is a loooooot of fun, but they’re nowhere near the same amount of personal reward as there is in creating a track from scratch or nearly from scratch.

.

XED: -I agree, so with that, what was one of the best tracks you’ve ever made? And what was one of your most challenging projects you’ve ever worked on?

.

Flex: -I really think this Ricky Bobby Flip I’m dropping today is one of my best. Just in terms of sound quality, crispness, transient variety, etc. From a producer’s perspective, I’m happy about the way it turned out. I’m currently working on my most challenging project ever actually. Haha. I’m making a 4-5 song trap/rap/twerk EP with a producer named, FLYBY (flyaway) from the northeast. It’s much more complex and full songs than I’ve done in the past, and also just much different than the beats and funky jams I usually produce.

.

XED: -Yes, you do work on a ton of remixes! So who would you say are some of your artistic inspirations?

.

Flex: -My artistic inspirations are too many to count and name but anywhere from have heart and hardcore music, to brodinski and deep house music, and literally everything in between. Also my kolossus family very much so. They inspire me by being my peers but also being really talented peers of mine that I look up to while looking in the eyes (metaphorically haha).

.

XED: -What are some goals for you artistically, that you want to surpass this year? Have you met any?

.

Flex: -I mean if me a year ago listened to my shit from today he would be shocked and impressed. Since the beginning I’ve made sure to be very modest and humble about the things I do and make, because there is always someone better than you out there making music. In the future from here though, I’d love to get really good at mastering and just improve my engineering skills.

.

XED: -What do you love most about the Kolossus family?

.

Flex: -I LOVE that kolossus is full of driven young people who are making music purely for the reason that they love music and being a creative artist. No one is making big bucks here or has too big of a head, it’s really nice.

.

XED: -Any new projects coming soon?

.

Flex: -An EP of my own eventually this summer, and an EP by myself and FLYBY. (@flyawaymusic)

.

XED: -Anything else you want to fill your fans in on?

.

Flex: -If anyone considers themselves a ‘fan’ of mine, thanks for giving a shit about anything I make and the music I put my time and effort into. Y’all have no idea how much it means to me. Make yourself happy and don’t let the world tell you what you want.
