Nail It! magazine made its debut on newsstands in March, and their July/August issue is selling out like hotcakes. Nowadays, nails are the new accessories for women, and compared to temporary tattoos. Celebrities like Katy Perry, Rihanna, Zoe Deschanel, Beyonce and more are obsessed with extravagant nail art.

Our nail blogger, Yazmin Ramos, caught up with Nail It! magazine Editor in Chief, Stephanie Lavery to find out the best way to keep your nails healthy for summer, and if 3-D nail art is indeed OVER??

Nail Candy: Congratulations on the debut of Nail It! magazine. It’s definitely a page-turner. Why did you decide to create a magazine all about nails?
Stephanie: It’s been a labor of love, and to hear that people are enjoying Nail It! magazine, and responding well to it really makes me happy. Nails have grown to become super popular, and unfortunately the consumer audience doesn’t know much, and there was really no outlet for consumers to learn about nail trends, nail products, nail safety, salon health and how to find a good nail salon. Our goal is to educate the consumer.

Nail Candy: Was it hard to find the perfect name for the magazine?
Stephanie: Finding the name was 100% the hardest thing that we had to do. We went through so many rounds of names, and somebody thought of the name “Polish,” but we couldn’t use it. It actually took a long time, but we finally settled on Nail It! and I don’t know why we didn’t just start with it from the beginning.

Nail Candy: What are your thoughts on women (even little girls) that are bold and daring with their nails?
Stephanie: I am thrilled that nail art is so popular now, and that everyone is accepting it, and enjoying it, and trying out different nail trends! I mean everybody literally from little girls to older women. The wonderful thing about nails is that they can be an extension of who you are, and it’s an accessory for any outfit. I love that nails aren’t permanent and that you can change them when you get bored. The trend of nail art is driving so many consumers back into the salon. I think it’s great to finally have everyone realize that nails are an awesome service and an affordable luxury.

Nail Candy: Vogue magazine says 3-D nail art is over, and no longer considered a trend. Do you agree?
Stephanie: Well you know my whole thing, and I mean my respect goes to In Style and Vogue — they’re like bibles for me. I’ve been reading them forever, but at the end of the day, what does Vogue and In Style magazine know about nails? They know everything about celebrities, and great things about fashion, but they don’t know about nails! That’s why I’m hoping Nail It! magazine is successful because we know the latest nail trends, and we know every celebrity nail technician.

Nail Candy: What’s the best way for women with natural nails to keep their nails healthy for summer?
Stephanie: The key to healthy nails is cuticle oil! Keep a little bottle in your purse, and apply it on your nails everyday. You should also have a bottle of cuticle oil near your bed, and one at your desk. I literally have cuticle oil everywhere and every time I think of it I slather it on because it really provides moisture to your nails, which will increase flexibility. Cuticle oil keeps your nails healthy and prevents your polish from chipping. Never clip or nip your cuticles. You should only be nipping dead pieces of skin!
