Sutton Turner | Executive Pastor and Executive Elder | Mars Hill Church | Seattle, WA
For the first 35 years of his life, Sutton Turner worshiped many things — toys, money, cars, career, real estate.

But, in 2005, this successful entrepreneur and Harvard Business School-educated CEO realized that despite his material possessions, he was dead on the inside. He needed God to revive his life.
Turner found a fresh start at a Texas megachurch where he served as executive pastor until 2008. “God transformed my heart, my marriage and my relationships with my kids,” he says.  After a brief stint as a church executive, Turner went to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar to be the founding CEO of what is now a megabillion-dollar real estate management company.

In 2011, Turner returned to America — and to his ministry calling. He now serves as the executive pastor and one of three executive elders of what he says is a “fast-growing and financially poor church” — Mars Hill Church in Seattle. He oversees the church’s central operations and business functions, including finance, property, technology, media, communications, publishing and recording. He also mentors all the executive pastors across Mars Hill’s 14 locations. ...

We're going to do an overview of the companies Sutton Turner has mentioned on his LinkedIn profile.  First we'll start with the most recent and obvious:

1. MARS HILL CHURCH

http://www.linkedin.com/pub/sutton-turner/12/525/91b

Executive Pastor & Executive Elder

Mars Hill Church

Nonprofit; 51-200 employees; Religious Institutions industry

April 2011 – Present (2 years 10 months) seattle, washington

Sutton currently serves Mars Hill Church as Executive Elder and Executive Pastor. Mars Hill is a multi-site church with 14 current churches across the states of Washington, California, New Mexico, and Oregon. Mars Hill has planted over 400 churches through its www.Acts29Network.org and trains disciples through www.theResurgence.org. As Executive Pastor, Sutton oversees all centralized functions for all 14 Mars Hill Churches, TheResurgence.com, Mars Hill Global, Mars Hill Network, Resurgence Books, and Resurgence Conference, all external Campaigns, as well as serving Pastor Mark Driscoll as his Executive Pastor.

April 2011 thru November 2011 he served as General Manager before becoming an elder.

General manager of MH?  Curious.  Given that by June 2012 Mark Driscoll was explaining the systemic deficits every campus of MH was running; given that Munson's policy on record was grow even when you shouldn't; it's not impossible to imagine that Turner came into MH and got the impression that the long-term fiscal approach of Mars Hill was a recipe for disaster.

By the way

http://www.churchleaders.com/pastors/pastor-articles/150820-4-reasons-to-expand-even-when-you-shouldn-t.html

Jamie Munson is Lead Pastor and President of Mars Hill Church. Pastor Jamie married his wife, Crystal, in 1999. They have four children: Caleb, Kara, Orin, and Haley.

If you try to click on Jamie Munson's hyperlink somewhere at The Resurgence you might get

http://theresurgence.com/authors/jamie-munson

We couldn't find what you were looking for.

"/authors/jamie-munson" doesn't exist on this site. Here is some recent content.

Munson's posts are still searchable and available but Munson's author profile is gone.

Munson, famously, got a fawning send-off from Mark Driscoll who then quickly had Sutton Turner introduced as someone with gifts MH had badly needed for a while.  Like Munson, however, Driscoll's sales pitch to Mars Hill was that Sutton Turner had great business experience and skill.  There's at least some case to be made that Turner has more actual business experience than Jamie Munson, whose sales pitch on leaving paid staff at Mars Hill has been to reverse his pitch and say he's a non-profit guy learning how to do corporate.

But finding stuff about Turner's corporate background has taken time.  Winston helpfully contributed some material and other materials presented themselves over a weekend of digging.

So let's keep going through Turner's LinkedIn resume to see what, if anything, we can find out about companies he's been part of.

2. WASEEF, BARWA REAL ESTATE GROUP

Chief Executive of Waseef

Barwa Real Estate Group - Doha, Qatar

Public Company; 501-1000 employees; Real Estate industry

June 2010 – May 2011 (1 year)

About Waseef:
Waseef was established in Q3 2009 from the merger between Barwa Property Management, Barwa Facilities Management and Barwa Hotels. It currently performs the property, facilities and leasing management for 10,000 residential units in 2011. In 2012, they will add to this massive portfolio with the addition of Barwa Financial District - a 9 tower and almost 700,000 sq. meter BUA mixed use property that will be the world headquarters of Qatar Petroleum. Waseef will expand the activities of Barwa in the local market while simultaneously cutting servicing costs and enhancing performance and quality.

About BARWA:
BARWA is one of Qatar’s world leading real estate and investment companies, established in 2005 with the mission of contributing to the sustainable growth of Qatar by investing in businesses, services and expertise. With business interests in real-estate, infrastructure, business services and financial services, BARWA's drive and determination comes from us working in tandem with the Qatari Government’s overarching development plan as laid out in Qatar Vision 2030, which stresses human, social, economic and environmental development.

BARWA aims to be one of the most successful real estate and investment companies in the world, with a home in Qatar and a business operating around the globe.

BARWA's flagship projects include: Barwa Financial District, Barwa Commercial Avenue, Barwa Al Sadd and Barwa Al Doha. Supporting these projects is a group of Business services such as Project Management, Development Management and Asset Management through specialized centers of excellence.

As blogged recently, Waseef included assets sold by Barwa in a $7.1 billion sale that was planned to reduce its debt but was not particularly successful.

http://wenatcheethehatchet.blogspot.com/2014/01/sutton-turners-old-corporate.html

For a direct link to the article go here.  See also:

http://www.albawaba.com/business/qatar-real-estate-543712

Finally, it is worth noting that despite the state’s effort to invest billions into infrastructure and real estate development, not all Qatari based developers are benefitting from these injections. Mega property developer Barwa Real Estate posted a 40 per cent drop in net profit for the first nine months of 2013 even after receiving $7.1 billion in support from the state to reduce its debts.

So despite the multi-billion dollar aid from the state of Qatar to reduce its debt Barwa still posted a 40 percent drop in net profits in 2013.  Maybe they sold the assets mentioned in the Waseef orbit because those were solvent?  Others can feel free to chime in with more details.  Moving right along ...

3. Khidmah, LLC

Chief Executive

Khidmah, LLC, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Khidmah’s approach includes management, consulting, facilities and maintenance, leasing and re-sales, security, cleaning, landscaping, health and fitness, 24/7 bi-lingual customer call centers, all provided under a single point of contact to improve communication, increase customer satisfaction and maximize service quality, all while reducing costs. "We teach what we know, but we reproduce what we are" is an intriguing quote.  You can peruse the rest of the short article there at your leisure.

http://khidmah.com/press-releases/sutton-turner-addressed-the-property-and-facilities-management-conference

Mr. Turner has more than 13 years experience in the real estate sector, where his particular expertise lies in the area of real estate management.  Prior to the founding of Khidmah, Mr. Turner was the Executive Director of Asset & Property for Sorouh Real Estate, P.J.S.C.  Before coming to the Middle East, Mr. Turner was President and Founder of a full-service real estate management company in the United States, where he managed more than 38 locations across 10 different states in the country, employing a team of 330 staff that delivered combined real estate services.  Mr. Turner also owned and operated a construction and facilities management company.

This? But if you follow the company link www.sorouh.com

http://www.sorouh.com/ turns into

Wenatchee The Hatchet has to trust that someone can explain what happened there and if it matters at all.

http://www.arabianbusiness.com/companies/sorouh-real-estate-66457.html

Now why isn't Sorouh Real Estate, P.J.S.C. on the LinkedIn resume?  Who knows?  But there is at least an article by Nathalie Gillet published September 28, 2009:

http://www.thenational.ae/business/property/developers-take-the-plunge

In these tough times, developers including Dubai Properties, Deyaar, Nakheel, Union Properties and Omniyat have created their own property management divisions. And more recently, Sorouh Real Estate has joined the club after teaming up with Capital Investment, which is based in Dubai. Their new joint-venture company, Khidmah, specialises in property management, and has 240 staff at Sas Al Nakhl and Golf Gardens, a recently delivered villa complex from Sorouh. They help residents at the state-of-the-art fitness club, maintain the swimming pool, and even check if the grass has been watered.

"During the past year, Deyaar has been working with a long-term strategy of diversifying its income streams and our planned expansion in property management is in line with this overall strategy," says Markus Giebel, the chief executive of Deyaar. Khidmah, though, aims to stand out from the competition and introduce a more comprehensive property management plan to the UAE. "Property management is not only about leasing," says Sutton Turner, the chief executive of the company. "Property management companies here tend to outsource the services. We are doing it in-house: the leasing, resale, landscaping, cleaning the swimming pool and taking care of the infrastructure, among other things. "It is a western model that I brought here because I ran a similar company in the US." Residents of Sas Al Nakhl and Golf Garden can ring Khidmah's call centre and discuss a range of issues such as a problem with the swimming pool, fitness centre or airconditioning. "We were having such a hard time finding good quality service maintenance that we felt we had to establish that business to retain the quality and to cut costs," says Mr Turner. While service management is a logical progression for major developers, other companies are taking more radical steps. Emaar Properties, for example, is shifting into the healthcare business. By the end of this year, the developer will open its first three medical centres and clinics in Downtown Burj Dubai, the Meadows and Arabian Ranches, following a partnership deal with the US private healthcare company, Methodist International.

.  That "full-service real estate management company"  in 38 states in the United States doesn't particularly look like:

4. CELEBRATION CHURCH AUSTIN

Executive Director

Celebration Church Austin

Not entirely sure what all of that means but perhaps alert and business-savvy readers can unpack this for us here at Wenatchee The Hatchet.

Now, finally, it would seem, there's this:

6. THE WENTWORTH COMPANIES

Chief Executive and Co-Founder

The Wentwood Companies

Privately Held; 51-200 employees; Real Estate industry

January 1998 – December 2003 (6 years)

Start-up property management and construction company that was spun off from Graewood Capital Partners, LP and that grew from 2 to 240 employees. Divested company of Property Management and Construction Divisions to form Mission Housing and Madera Construction.

Led company through annual strategic planning and day-to-day activities. Participated in after-action review and analysis of real estate acquisitions, including profitability, spin offs, future acquisitions and lessons learned. Oversaw draw process, monthly accounting payment and contract revision approval. Drove internal technology initiatives to streamline, redesign and automate operations and workflow. Selected as beta tester for property management web-based cutting edge industry software. Held P&L accountability with 6 direct and 234 indirect reports.

• Achieved average gross margin of 24%, including a start-up year loss, with gross revenues averaging $1.5M per year for six years.
• Took start-up from 5 to 24 properties in 7 states by focusing initiatives around team of turnaround employees who took over and managed properties quickly in any U.S. city – in 48 hours or less.
• Cut employee annual churn to 46% with industry average above 100% by initiating Team Member programs, including 401K, long term disability, performance bonus system, Work from Home program, and family health coverage.

Here's a brochure.  Of brief note is this:

In 2001, Wentwood shifted focus to properties financed with Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC).

There's also an old 1997 article

http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/stories/1997/04/14/story6.html?page=all

A "Big D" investment group is doing some big spending on Columbus apartments.

Affiliates of Dallas-based Wentwood Cos. have purchased four North Columbus apartment complexes totaling 1,511 units for $32 million.

The affiliated partnerships purchased the Laurel Lakes, Abbey Lane, Breckenridge and Old Nantucket apartment complexes March 27 from affiliates of Sentinel Real Estate Corp., a New York City institutional investment advisory firm. Sentinel had held the complexes for more than 10 years.

The new owners secured the $27.1 million cost of the real estate with $26.6 million in mortgages from Atlanta-based Column Financial Inc.

"We're very bullish on Columbus," said Wentwood President J. Sutton Turner. "It's a very stable market." ...

So there's that but there's this other entity that John Sutton Turner seems to have been affiliated with that hasn't come up and it's not the aforementioned Sorouh Real Estate that was merged into Khidmah, it's something else, cryptically listed as:

It looks like we might have a match, though the general manager being Rick Schaeffer suggests leadership/personnel changes in the last half decade.  Again, readers are welcome to contribute information and preferably through links and verifiable sources about the history of this country club.  It looks like Sutton Turner had something to do with the company CHCC - MGA but precisely what happened is a mystery.  But, hey, Wenatchee The Hatchet enjoys Batman stories so ... readers are welcome to contribute here.

POSTSCRIPT, comments are welcome but let's also have some discretion.  :)  For instance, that Resurgence Publishing is a for-profit company that got set up and of which Mark Driscoll was president circa 2009 can be readily established. Speculation about the real nature of the firm (or of foundations) is interesting, to be sure, but WtH would like to stick to what can be sourced and verified.  Let's err on the side of commenting when we've figured out what's going on and can document it.

This weekend was not much of a laundry weekend so there was some extra time to do some research but washing clothes isn't necessarily going to get mentioned just any old time at the blog. Specific unidentified commenter, did you catch that? ;)
