The RN Clinical Nurse Leader \(CNL\) is an advanced generalist prepared at the Master’s degree level, with superior clinical and patient assessment skills\. The CNL works with Nurse Managers, nurse leaders, and staff to coordinate care, manage resources, and compile and evaluate data with a focus on patient safety and outcomes\. The CNL also enhances the bedside nurse’s education and critical thinking by using “real life” situations and best evidence to teach best practices and standards while at the bedside\.

The CNL will serve as the “lead nurse” and is accountable for the management of care and the care environment for a specified cohort of patients within a micro\-system/unit\. The CNL role provides horizontal leadership accountable for the management of patient care and the patient’s care environment through knowing the patient, effective communication and lateral integration of care\. The framework for the CNL’s practice is steered by the WellStar Professional Practice Model, 5\-Star Nursing, and evidence based practice and research\. RN competencies are derived from these models and are supported by the WellStar Core Competencies\.

It is expected that all RN Clinical Nurse Leaders are licensed, clinically knowledgeable, uphold the practice of nursing as outlined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and implement the Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics Standards put forth by the American Nurses Association\. As a member of the patient services team, it is expected the CNL upholds the voice of the patient, system policies and procedures while supporting service excellence goals\.

Required Minimum Education: MSN, Masters in Nursing from an accredited school or university and Certification as a Clinical Leader from an approved CNL program certified by the American Colleges of Nursing\.

Required Minimum Licensure/Certification: Registered Nurse, actively licensed in the state of Georgia\. Must have a current BLS card from the American Heart Association on the first day of employment in position or complete prior the end of orientation\. Certification as a Clinical Leader \- from an approved CNL program certified by the American Colleges of Nursing\.

Required Minimum Experience: Three to five years of acute care nursing for similar patient population\. Progressive experience in health care including involvement in dire

ct patient care, educating staff, supervising staff, and problem solving of unit or organizational issues\.

Required Minimum Skills: Ability to identify improvement in clinical operations and implement change and willingness to challenge established ways of doing things in a constructive way\. Ability to lead, mentor and develop staff\. Exemplifies a strong, positive attitude toward internal and external customers and continuous service improvement\. Excellent conflict resolution skills\. Has well developed diplomatic, tact and listening skills\. Adept at using technology as a tool to support education\. Uses quality improvement methodologies to evaluate system failures and patient safety practices\. Skilled at delegation, supervision and evaluation of care given\.
