Under the supervision of the Histology Supervisor and/or lead technician, prepares tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist.

Performs all duties of Histo Tech I, in addition to, maintaining and programming tissue processors, performing special stains techniques and preparing various staining solutions, decalcifying bone specimens and staining using a modified H&E stain technique, operating automated slide and cassette printers.

Pay Grade: CI

Requires an Associates degree with one year experience (clinical internship counts as one year of clinical experience) and HTASCP (preferred) or successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program with two years of clinical experience and eligibility for HT ASCP registry. A high school diploma and five years of clinical experience and eligibility for HTASCP registry may be substituted for the Associates degree. Recommend registry within one year of employment at this level.

HT (ASCP) Certification preferred

1-5 years experience as a histology technician in a clinical setting, dependent upon education.

Work requires knowledge of histochemistry, microscopy, processing techniques, preparation of specimens, medical terminology, and chemistry. An understanding of metric system is required.

Capable of independently performing : loading and programming tissue processors following established procedures, embedding and organizing paraffin blocks, perform microtomy at appropriate thickness, staining of routine slides with hematoxylin and eosin (manually and automated), performing slide/block match for quality control recognizing discrepancies and takes corrective action, operation of automatic coverslippers (manual technique as well), use of metric balances, water baths, ovens, computers, printers and other related equipment according to lab & hospital safety procedures. Capable of performing preventative maintenance on microtomes, automatic stainer, coverslipper and other equipment as specified. Computer competency with typing of at least 30 WPM. Capable of independently preparing and performing all special stains; Capable of decalcifying and staining of bone tissue; Operation of the automated slide and cassette etching system. Capable of covering the accessioning desk and accessioning both frozen and routine specimens. Requires basic knowledge of theory and concept of Immunohistochemistry.

This is close precision work requiring attention to detail. Should have strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to read and interpret directions, both oral and written. Organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments. Can work successfully individually or as part of a team in a high volume, dynamic laboratory.

Visual acuity and the ability to distinguish fine gradation of colors, including differentiating of red and green. Manual dexterity in both hands, with above average eye and hand coordination. Able to grasp and manipulate small instruments and delicate equipment. Lifting typically not in excess of 20 lb. for no more than 20 feet.

Working Conditions: Attention to detail is critical to the performance of this job as it directly affects patient diagnoses.

Works in a laboratory area with frequent exposure to unpleasant odors from chemicals, dyes, etc.

Some exposure to hazards due to daily contact with flammable liquids, chemicals and infectious specimens. Potential for harm or personal injury is limited when proper required safety procedures are followed.

Prolonged sitting for up to 4 hours required.

Prolonged periods of time in performing detailed, precision tasks.

May be required to change hours and/or work overtime to accommodate work flow and staffing issues. Pathology employees are essential personnel and required to report to work in inclement weather, and may be required to remain on-site.

Performs other duties as assigned.
