If washing sheets that are coated in urine is your favorite hobby, you may want to skip this post and move on to another. All others, keep reading–I think you’re going to be pleased by what I am about to share and how easy it was for us to help our child stop wetting the bed!
When we first started going to our church, we signed up for the church-campout right away. One of our kids was a 1 year old at that time. We joined in on an evening worship activity, where everyone brought their lawn chairs to one campsite and sat around a fire and sang worship songs, to guitar. I had our 1 year old on my lap, and it suddenly felt like I broke my water–but I wasn’t pregnant. My pants were soaked and uncomfortably warm. We were with brand new friends, in a brand new environment, and I suddenly had to walk back to our campsite (with a flashlight, in the dark) and change my clothes (and said child’s clothes and diaper) in a dark tent. It was not pretty. And if that wasn’t enough–the same exact thing happened the second night, at the Family Talent Night. I was sitting there, enjoying the talent show and suddenly felt wet–again.
That was a 1 year old, though, and a 1 year old peeing their pants (day or night) isn’t too alarming, right? Fast forward several years. That same child continued to have urine issues…
Imagine with me: your most snuggly, huggy, lap-sitting child usually smells like pee.
Not only is the child wetting every.single.night and wetting through pull-ups often, but they’re also trickling bits of urine onto their undies and clothes everyday. Not a pretty picture, right? You want to be a loving mom and welcome the child onto your lap, and snuggle, and read books together. You want to hold that kid on your lap when you’re at a play and the play gets a little intense–or in church, as you listen to the sermon together. You don’t want pee on your lap, though, right? (If you do, well….I don’t know what to say to that…) 
This pee thing is getting in the way of your great Mommy-Child relationship. Have you been there? It’s awful. This is exactly the kind of situation that makes moms desperate–not for coffee–not for chocolate–but for a solution!
I was desperate. We had been buying pull ups too long (the cost, the thought of pee-filled pull-ups in a landfill…it was all too much). I was tired of smelling pee every day. The nice thing about toilet training is, unless you hang out in the bathroom with your kids (I don’t make a habit of it), you don’t have to smell their output. You know what I’m saying? I like to teach my kids to share, but we don’t share pee. Or poop for that matter. I mentioned before that I love smelling nice things. I like smelly lotions, and shampoos, and shower gels, and essential oils. I don’t love smelling pee. Ever. Under any circumstance.
So, one night, it was about 8 pm, and the above-mentioned child said “I don’t have any more pull ups.” It was one of those Mommy-didn’t-plan-ahead moments, and I was too tired to deal with it. Since we didn’t want to go to the store, I decided to look up which essential oils would work for bedwetting. That, and we said we’d wake up the child a couple of times to go to the bathroom in the night. It was risky, but we were tired–and to our surprise, it worked!
The oils that have been working for us are Cypress, and a special doTERRA blend called Balance. Cypress oil was one of the earliest treatments used for treating an overactive bladder or bedwetting. (source) There is evidence of using Cypress in this way, along with Juniper Berry and beer from clear back to ancient Egypt. I promise, my remedy won’t make your child get drunk before bed. Also, my solution is better than the idea someone came up with in 1642,to sprinkle bits of the bladder of a pig all over the child’s bed….lovely. It’s also a better method than the one from the early 1700’s–forcing children to drink urine before bed to keep them from wetting the bed. I’m sure that bedtime routine went smooth as butter!! Can you picture it?
“Johnny, drink your urine. You have to.”
“But Mom, it doesn’t taste very good! And it’s warm!”
Well, I promise not to tell you to make your kids drink urine!
Before I share the recipe for my remedy, I will mention something else we have done that has probably also helped the problem. While I am skeptical of Food Sensitivity Testing, we decided to have this particular child tested. This child was also dealing with quite a bit of asthma, and we wanted to figure out the root cause. The sensitivity test showed that the child had high antibodies to both dairy and eggs. There is debate about how accurate this kind of testing done, and Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride doesn’t think it’s very accurate at all–but again, we were desperate. We wanted our child to be able to breathe. I did notice that when we stopped feeding dairy and eggs to this child, the child peed less at night. Not that it stopped entirely, but I think the general inflammation in the body was improving and helping a little with bladder control. We also noticed that during holidays or times when the child veered from the normal foods (and cheated, with, say, a chocolate pudding pie with eggs and dairy in it), the child would pee the bed that night. SO—step 1, I would say, is figure out what your child is sensitive to, and stop feeding the child that foods. I would say dairy or maybe even eggs might be a good guess, even if you don’t do the sensitivity test (you would have to see a Naturopathic Doctor to have this test done–it is a blood draw). We had a friend who mentioned to us several years ago that when her son ate eggs, he would pee the bed. I had a hard time believing it, because I thought eggs were a super food! But now my eyes are opened a little more, and I’m beginning to wonder if eggs may really have something to do with a lack of bladder control. (More on that to come…)
That said, I gave samples of Cypress and Balance essential oils to a friend, and she tried it on her child who has had bedwetting problems for years, and it worked on her too! SO…My test subjects have only included 2 (wish I could try this on a whole bunch of kids and let you know the findings!), but it’s worked so far. Please tell me if it works for you or not in the comments! I’d love more feedback on this. Ok, now I’ll share the recipe!
Easy Bedwetting Remedy (or, No Pee Solution, if you prefer to call it that)
INGREDIENTS
1 oz glass roller bottle (I got mine on Amazon)
40 drops Cypress essential oil
40 drops Balance blend essential oil (you can buy essential oils through me)
fractionated coconut oil (basically, just liquid coconut oil)
METHOD
Fill your glass roller bottle with 40 drops of Cypress and 40 drops of Balance, then fill the rest of the bottle with coconut oil (or other carrier oil). Put the roller cap on, and then the lid on and shake the bottle.
Every night before bed, shake the bottle up a bit and roll some on your child’s abdomen. If you’re worried about the carrier oil staining their clothing (we haven’t had any issues so far), place a wash cloth over the top of the oil.
It works for moms, too!
Sometimes if I have eaten sugar, I feel like I have to pee more often. Do you get this? SO, I decided to try the roller bottle out. I immediately felt muscles tighten up and the urgency to pee went away. SO, I know it works! Check it out, if you struggle with this issue.
