New Yorkers have been crossing the Hudson River to Hoboken for more affordable real estate (and great views) for a while now. Now, the fitness scene is catching up.

This month, West Side cycling-and-more studio Pedal NYC opened an outpost called FIT RxN and boxing outfitter Everlast debuted its first-ever boutique gym, The Lab, in the small Jersey commuter town. Hudson River CrossFit opened eight months ago, as did boutique studio Work it Out’s second location.

“When Noel [Fiorentinos] started Work It Out, it was one of the first boutique studios in town,” says co-owner Lisa Bruno. In 2010, she was way ahead of the fitness scene curve, offering a range of creative, cool class styles—from Groove Cycle to Upper Class (upper body toning)—in a pretty, amenity-filled space. And she soon couldn’t handle the demand.

“Every class was waitlisted,” Fiorentinos says. The second studio is double the size and also offers “blended” (AKA mash-up) classes.

Hoboken’s CrossFit community has also been getting stronger and stronger (obviously), says Hudson River CrossFit founder John Franklin, who also owns Bowery CrossFit in the East Village.

“There are currently three operational CrossFit gyms with at least one more in the process of opening. On top of that there are at least two other gyms that offer CrossFit style training,” he says. “For a town of 50,000 or so people, that definitely indicates a lot of demand.”

So its not a huge surprise that Everlast chose the town as the setting for its first foray into fitness classes, and it probably won’t be long before others (ahem, SoulCycle) hop on the PATH train, too. —Lisa Elaine Held
