Here’s a peek into my must-haves for the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon on March 19. By Zarelda Marie Goh

Shoes

I took some time to find the right shoes and finally settled on a pair of neutral trainers with custom-made insoles to correct my overpronation. You should clock at least 50km in a pair of shoes that you want to use for a race. This is advice from my coach, Andrew Cheong of SSTAR.fitness. In general, wearing anything brand new on race day is a no-no.

Compression socks

I’m still new to using compression gear. So far I’ve seen the benefits of using calf sleeves and knee-high compression socks. My calves and feet feel less sore during a long run. I’ll likely be using the latter for my marathon. Prone to blisters? Put vaseline on the tips of your toes, suggests Andrew.

Two outfits

The weather in Los Angeles is expected to range from 13 to 25 deg C on race day. That sounds pleasant, but I’ve never raced overseas before, so I’m bringing both a pair of shorts and a pair of tights to see which is suitable for the weather. A water-repellent windbreaker is also a must. For tops, I’ll be wearing a loose sleeveless top. As a representative from Skechers HQ shared, “We can never guarantee the weather. Runners will need to prepare for all possible conditions.”

A well-worn sports bra

A sports bra that is too tight might cause chaffing. I’m going to play it safe and don one that I’ve worn many times as I know it’s super comfortable.

Wireless earphones and my marathon playlist

I will definitely need music to motivate me as I run my first 42km race. My wireless earphones are suitable for running as they don’t get in the way. In terms of my playlist, I’ve got a good mix of music, from Bruno Mars to The Weeknd. (Note that some marathons ban the use of earphones due to safety reasons so it’s best to check beforehand.)

Energy gels

Gels provide fuel to get through a marathon. This is good advice from my coach: Carry an extra pack of gel just incase. Take the one with the most caffeine first as it takes some time for the caffeine to kick in.

My husband

My significant other will be coming along to Los Angeles with me. He’ll be there to cheer me on. But to be frank, he’s been part of my journey from the start. He constantly tells me that he’s proud of me, and supported me emotionally when the going got tough. For all that and more, I’m very thankful.
