In the last few weeks, Trump has said some notable things about his penis, had protesters violently removed from his rallies, and offended pretty much everyone who isn’t voting for him. As someone who has been in the spotlight for decades and even had his own reality show, Trump knows how to play the media. He knows how to keep the cameras on him when there are a million other places they could be (a Bernie Sanders event, for example…). So, in a lot of ways, there are no surprises with Trump—only aggressive reminders of how scary a rich white man with infinite power can really be.

For this week’s episode of Uninterrupted, we invited CNN commentator Sally Kohn and comedian and writer Akilah Hughes to share their very well-informed thoughts on Trump, the sexism directed at Hillary Clinton, and how this whole mess started and is currently playing out in the media.

While Sally is primarily known as a commentator on CNN, you might also recognize her from her very popular TED Talk on the importance of “emotional correctness.” Sally’s take is that words matter, but what matters more is the intention behind them.

“Political correctness is nothing new,” says Sally. “We’ve had a society for two hundred plus years that has demanded women, women of color, men of color, treat white men with a certain amount of deference. And if not, it was punished by lynching, rape, domestic violence—you name it. It’s only now that we have suddenly—culturally and normatively—said, ‘Hey, why don’t we treat everyone, at least with our words, with fairness or decency.'”

Akilah, a comedian and writer who recently moderated Fusion’s Black and Brown Democratic Forum, believes that we need to begin asking different questions of the candidates—especially when it comes to racial inequality.

“Something feels a little crappy about asking the first black president to have the burden to fix all the injustices towards black people,” said Akilah. “But it’s 2016, it’s about time someone is taken to task for it.”
