The Milk Carton Kids started off their set with a Joey Ryan (JR) song, "Permanent", followed by Kenneth Pattengale's "Girls, Gather 'Round". I thought Pattengale's singing style has a very Dylanesque quality…

DAKOTA JAZZ CLUB

The Milk Carton Kids w/ Brian Wright

Moms, you must have the best children, if they bring you to this Milk Carton Kids show at the Dakota Jazz Club for Mother's Day on Sunday.

For the 'kids', they will enjoy the music, for the mothers, they get to enjoy some great food at the swanky restaurant.

On a serious note, I have spent $75+ on dinner at the Dakota and it was well spent. Delicious.

TURF CLUB

Matt Pond w/ The Lighthouse And The Whaler

Matt Pond: A decade of Emblems

Matt Pond (PA), the NY-based collective formed by the Philadelphia native, hits the road again with Ohio folk-pop openers The Lighthouse and The Whaler, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of his seminal fifth album, Emblems (Altitude Records) and what Paste Magazine described as “a lush, haunting collection of superbly crafted chamber pop” and what CMJ said was "an ideal record for the mature indie-rock fan with a weakness for string sections."

Thought by many as their favorite of Pond’s 8 LPs and 8 EPs, the tour is a rare chance to see that work performed in its entirety, along with selected new music including cuts from last year’s The Lives Inside the Lives In Your Hands (BMG) and other favorites.

Pond has been busy of late, releasing Skeletons and Friends via Noisetrade and working on another new full-length, via a Pledge Music campaign. Expect a laid back look into the past, as well as one that looks ahead, from this seasoned indie veteran.

THE O'SHAUGHNESSY

The Idan Raichel Project

The Idan Raichel Project returns to Minnesota for a performance at the The O'Shaughnessy Auditorium at St. Catherine University in St. Paul on Wednesday, May 14th. We last saw Idan Raichel at the Dakota Jazz Club on his side project with Malian guitarist, Vieux Farka Touré.

The O'Shaughnessy is quite a grand concert hall, and it's really perfect for this type of world music because of the great acoustics and the audience will have a greater appreciation for this music (vs the usual dive bar that I'm used to attending).

The Idan Raichel Project's latest album is called Quarter to Six, and it is out now on
Cumbancha.

Be sure to catch this band for a rare appearance in North America:

Cage the Elephant – Come a Little Closer

The rising Kentucky band in support of third album Melophobia (RCA Records), has embarked on an extensive North American Spring tour, which kicked off at Coachella and features sets from Foals, along with openers J. Roddy Walston & The Business.

Post-punk and psychedelic, the new album’s title refers to a fear of music, though radio listeners have done anything but be afraid of lead single,“Come A Little Closer”, which hit the Billboard Hot 100 immediately upon release, and has been the #1 Alternative Song for the last 10 weeks. Touring non-stop since the album’s release last fall, like their earlier song says, there "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked."

Mirah

CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER

Mirah w/ Loamlands and Led to Sea

This is the truth, but I went to see Mirah and Thao a few years ago and I absolutely love Mirah's voice. I don't know what it is about it, but I can just listen to her sing all day.

Mirah is currently touring in support of her latest album Changing Light, which comes out May 13th via Absolute Magnitude Recordings and K Records. You can actually stream the album on NPR to get a preview for her upcoming live show.

The new album was written after a scorching break-up, so I suspect the songs are all very personal to Mirah.

Upcoming Mirah Tour Dates:

05-14 Evanston, IL - Space*

05-16 Minneapolis, MN - Cedar Cultural Center*

05-17 Iowa City, IA - Gabe's Oasis*
