Borderland, 2015

Acrylic, ink and gouache on paper

27 x 21 inches, 68.6 x 53.3 cm

Denver artist Evan Hecox has been on his travels, and the experiences he’s assimilated in the unfamiliar cities of America and beyond have formed the basis of a new collection of works entitled Far. Hecox has ventured to all sorts of places, from the major metropolises of Los Angeles, New York and Tokyo to the desolate remoteness of the Mojave Desert and the borderlands of Santa Fe to gather material for the show which can be found at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery.

Hecox’s works on paper, wood panel and canvas fuse line drawings with abstract geometric patterns and lettering. Whether it be a cityscape or a small town landscape, the process begins with reference photographs taken during the trips. Back in his Denver studio, the artist maps out the work in pencil before applying a combination of ink, gouache, watercolour and acrylic paint according the properties of the medium and the subject; ink lends detail and gives a sketch-like quality to elements such as power lines, while the bold solid geometric shapes are achieved with thick smooth gouache. Join Hecox on his travels at the Far exhibition which runs from 7 May to 6 June.
