If you have oily, acne-prone skin, skincare can tend to be a bit of an obsession, and even something as basic as taking off makeup at the end of the day can make a huge difference.  I don't use a lot of products, but there's always sunscreen, foundation, etc., and using an oil-based cleanser helps get all of it out better than foaming cleansers.  Easy solution, except that leaves oily residue on my face and just causes more acne.  And that's why I do something called "double cleansing."  This is apparently a method followed routinely as part of Japanese skincare, and I discovered it quite recently.  It's really simple and effective!

Quick Skincare Tip - Facial Cleansing with Double Cleansing Method

As is obvious from the name, double-cleansing involves using 2 different cleansers - an oil-based cleanser first and then follow through with a foaming cleanser and a hydrating toner.

Step 1:  Use an oil-based cleanser.  A lot of brands make lotion cleansers but something as simple as coconut/olive oil works just as fine.  The oil in the cleanser helps break down waterproof and more stubborn makeup, and also essential if you use sweatproof and water-resistant sunscreens.

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil - Not a balm-type cleansing oil because it washes off quite easily with water.
I use this for the first step, though, rather than a regular oil or balm because it's no-mess, easy cleaning.

Step 2:  Follow with a foaming cleanser.  The oil-based cleanser (or oil) used in the previous step will leave behind oil residue, and a soap-based cleanser helps take care of it.  I have oily-combination skin, so I do the oil first and finish with the soap, so my skin is left squeaky clean.

My current foaming cleanser:  Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Foaming Cleanser

Step 3:  Finish with a spritz of a non-alcoholic toner.  I love using the Lush Eau Roma Toner, but something fancy-schmancy like Evian's Mineral water spray would work great too :P  The important thing is to spray on something non-alcoholic and hydrating.  Spritz on, leave for a second or two to refresh skin, and wipe off with a cotton pad.

Lush Eau Roma Water - alcohol-free rose/lavender water with the goodness of essential oils.
I find the smell of rosewater quite relaxing and calming at the end of a long, tiring day.

Follow through with your regular moisturizer.  I don't double cleanse on a regular basis, partly because I am very lazy and also because as a stay-at-home person, I don't collect much grime over the course of the day.  Generally, I keep this for the end of the day, after a long day out and/or if I have had makeup on.  This simple ritual doesn't just help ensure that my skin is left feeling completely clean, but also leaves me quite relaxed :)
