Your Facebook status can reveal some less-than-great personality traits.

At long last, we have scientific evidence explaining why we find certain Facebook statuses so annoying.  New research suggests that Facebook status updates can reflect a lot about the poster’s personality.

Researchers from Brunel University in London collected data from over 500 Facebook users. They completed online surveys measuring the ‘Big Five’ personality traits — extroversion, neuroticism, openness, agreeableness and conscientiousness — as well as self-esteem and narcissism.

The researchers compared participants’ dominant personality traits with what they tend to post about on Facebook.

They found that people who post a lot about their diet and exercise plans usually score very high in narcissism. Meanwhile, people who post a lot about their relationship tend to score very low in self-esteem.

Basically, the people who won’t stop posting about their kale smoothies and early morning aerobic classes might as well be shouting, “Look at me! Look at how awesome I am! VALIDATE ME!”

Likewise, someone who posts a never ending stream of Facebook status updates about their is telling the world this: “I have nothing else going for me! Look at how whole this makes me feel! Don’t we look cute together as I’m simultaneously smiling on the outside and crying on the inside?”

It seems like the solution is to try and live your life somewhere in the middle of these two extremes. Perhaps posting pictures of you exercising with your romantic partner?

No, that sounds way more obnoxious.
