Anti-TPPA placards appear at Obama’s do

A group of students staged a protest at the Young South East Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Town Hall today, while US President Barrack Obama was speaking to some 600 youth leaders from across the region.

The group of about ten students held up anti-Egyptian coup posters as well as placards that read “No TPPA” in reference to the US-initiated Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

However, Obama, who was speaking about respecting differences in opinion at the time, merely responded “For example there is a ‘no’ over there. I don’t know what those young people are saying ‘no’ about.

“But I think that the basic idea is that somebody is not like you – if they look differently from you, if they believe differently than you – that you are treating them as you want to be treated,” he said.

At the end of the town hall session, spokesperson for the group Adam Fistival Wilfrid says he hoped to use YSEALI’s question and answer session to ask Obama to step in on Egypt’s death sentence against 529 Muslim supporters for allegedly participating in violent protests where a police officer was killed.

The group also hoped to voice opposition against the TPPA, especially its provisions on medical patents, which their fear would make medical care less affordable to the low and middle income groups.

Obama raises human rights issues in Malaysia

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE 3 hours ago

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — President Barack Obama said Sunday that he had raised the need for improved human rights in Malaysia with the country’s prime minister, but pushed back against suggestions that his failure to meet with a top opposition leader means he is not concerned.

Human rights groups have been urging Obama to meet with opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim while Obama is in the country as part of his four-nation Asia tour. Instead, Obama is sending national security adviser Susan Rice to meet Anwar on Monday.

Obama cited freedom of the press, human rights and civil liberties as issues that he said are always on the agenda when he travels the world. He downplayed the fact that a meeting with Anwar wasn’t on his schedule.

“The fact that I haven’t met Mr. Anwar in and of itself is not indicative of our lack of concern, given the fact that there are a lot of people I don’t meet with and opposition leaders that I don’t meet with,” he said at a joint news conference with Prime Minister Najib Razak after the two met privately. “That doesn’t mean I’m not concerned about them.”

Malaysia cannot succeed unless equal opportunity given to non-Muslims, says Obama

Malaysia must ensure non-Muslims in the country also have equal opportunites as its Muslim majority if the Souteast Asian nation wanted to continue prospering, United States President Barack Obama said today of his landmark visit, 48 years after the last American president paid a visit.

“Malaysia won’t succeed if the non-Muslims do not have the same opportunity,” Obama said in a townhall meeting for Asean youths at Dewan Tunku Cancelor in University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur today.

Obama said non-Muslims in Malaysia are currently facing hostility, and some have felt oppressed.

“There shouldn’t be reason to discriminate, and you have to make sure that you are speaking out against this in daily life.

And as you emerge as leaders, you should be on the side of politics that brings people together rather than drive them apart,” Obama said to cheers from the crowd.

WORDS FALL FLAT AS OBAMA LOSES CREDIBILITY! ‘Draw strength from ethnic, religious diversity’

KUALA LUMPUR – United States President Barack Obama said the US and Malaysia can draw strength from their ethnic and religious diversity and hope from history to carve a brighter future for the next generation.

In his remarks at a state banquet hosted at Istana Negara in conjunction with his three-day state visit to Malaysia, Obama noted that while the US and Malaysia may be different as nations, their people shared similar hopes and aspirations.

“I believe that whether we come from a remote village or a big city, whether we live in the United States or in Malaysia, we all share basic human aspirations – to live in dignity and peace.

“(We want) to shape our own destiny, to be able to make a living and to work hard and support a family.

And most of all, to leave the next generation something better than what was left to us,” he said.

National Mosque welcomes Obama

KUALA LUMPUR: US President Barack Obama arrived at one of Malaysia’s most iconic landmarks, the Masjid Negara, for a private visit on Sunday.

The visit to the mosque, built in 1922 on the site of a church, was greatly anticipated, with Muslim scholars here saying it would further emphasise the president’s commitment to reach out to the Muslim world.

“Religious Adviser to Prime Minister Tan Sri Dr Abdullah Md Zin said it was ‘not common’ for a leader of a superpower to include a visit to a mosque in their itinerary.” But, he said, “there can be no better way for Obama to honour Islam than by visiting Masjid Negara. It will be interesting to know what he has to say about the mosque and Islam.” Indeed it will. But whatever he says, it will almost certainly demonstrate that he has learned nothing since his outreach speech in Cairo on June 4, 2009, despite the spectacular failure of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, the abysmal failure of U.S. forces laboring under his impossible rules of engagement in Afghanistan, and despite the Fort Hood jihad massacre, and despite the Boston Marathon jihad bombing, and 1000 other events that refute his core assumptions. Despite all this, Obama will utter the same platitudes he has uttered before about the marvelous contributions Islam has made to world civilization and to the U.S., and about the need for mutual respect, and about how he will fight for Muslims’ right to observe Sharia provisions and fight against criticism of Islam and Muhammad.

Obama Visits Malaysia As Hunt for Missing Jet Goes On

Nolan Feeney @NolanFeeney

2:12 PM ET

The U.S. president reportedly voiced support for the search for the vanished Malaysia Airlines jet after landing in Kuala Lumpur, hours after a trip to Seoul where he spoke of North Korea as a “pariah state” that starves its people.

Obama was due to discuss the search for the plane with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, CNN reports, as one of various issues to be discussed on the first visit of a sitting U.S. president to the country in nearly 50 years. Trade agreements, defense and maritime security were also on the agenda, according to Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes.

SHAME ON YOU OBAMA! Why chicken out on meeting Anwar, who leads 52% OF MALAYSIANS

Anwar Ibrahim is the leader of Malaysia’s opposition, which won the majority of the popular vote in the 2013 elections and leads national opinion polls.

The White House announced that President Obama will not meet Anwar Ibrahim during his visit to Malaysia this week. In doing so, the United States would be ignoring the 52% of Malaysians who support Anwar and believe in democratic reform, transparency and religious freedom.

From Britain to Burma, President Obama has met with opposition figures and a meeting with Anwar would demonstrate his willingness to engage with Malaysia on the basis of mutual interest and mutual respect.

Statement issued by the Press Office of Anwar Ibrahim, Leader of the Malaysian Opposition

SHAME ON YOU OBAMA! Why chicken out on meeting Anwar, who leads 52% OF MALAYSIANS

TWO OPEN LETTERS TO OBAMA!

Tony Pua, MP: Mr President, with all due respect, we do not need you to visit our country to tell us that our country is a standout example of moderation, because it is not. Or for you to praise our Government that it is a model plural society living in peace and harmony, because it is only but a façade.

Open Letter to the President of the United States from Tony Pua, Opposition MP

Minority races in the country are extensively discriminated politically, socially and economically. No Malaysian can imagine ever the possibility of a non-Malay ever becoming the Prime Minister of the country. Race and religious issues are exploited extensively and openly to entrench the powers of the ruling elite.

Civil liberties are curbed via a web of draconian laws, with the complicity and collusion of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. The late Karpal Singh, the former chairman of my party, was found guilty of sedition, for simply expressing our Federal Constitution. This Government even wanted him jailed for the “offence”, even though he was pretty much paralyzed waist down. The leader of the opposition, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been politically and unjustly persecuted and previously jailed since 1998. Even I myself am under the threat of being disqualified as a Member of Parliament and jailed for up to 2 years if I were to be found guilty of “illegal assembly” for taking part in a peaceful candlelight vigil.

What’s more, religious freedom in the country is becoming increasingly suppressed, with religious extremism rearing its ugly head. Malaysia is the only country in the world where the term “Allah” is deemed exclusive to Muslims, a position which our Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Najib Razak has openly endorsed. Malay-language bibles have been seized. The Church is currently prosecuted in the Courts while religious leaders are being outrageously investigated for sedition.

Mr President, needless to say, I am certain your diplomatic corps would have also brief you on the extensive corrupt practices as well as abuses of power by our Government to enrich the influential elite and their cronies.

53% of Malaysians voted for a change of Government in the last general election held a year ago. Unfortunately, due to extensive gerrymandering, media manipulation as well as corrupt electoral practices, the aspirations of change by the ordinary Malaysians could not be achieved.

Hence it is our hope that your visit will not just be about “trade-relations”, the diplomatic euphemism for “profit maximization”, and “regional security”.

..
Malaysians hope that your visit to Malaysia can be a beacon of light in these difficult times. We hope that you will be able to share your personal journey and the fight by great American leaders against institutionalized racism and discrimination to make it possible for you to become elected as the President of United States, the leader of the free world.

Open letter to President Obama – from Dr Jeyakuman, Opposition MP

Written by Jeyakumar Devara

But one of the things that hold me back from warmly welcoming you to Malaysia is the fact that one of the important items on your agenda is to get our government to agree to the TPPA – the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement. You must know Mr President, that the TPPA will increase the prices of medicines for us, making it much more expensive for patients with HIV to get second line treatment which they will require once their viruses mutate and become impervious to the effects of the standard therapy. Your pharmaceutical firms have put in clauses such as “data exclusivity” which will impede the importing of generic drugs even after the completion of the patent period by “criminalizing” the use of data that was generated by the innovating company. Many patients with cancer will also have difficulty accessing the most effective drugs for their conditions once Malaysia signs on to the TPPA.

PANG KHEE TEIK, an arts programmer and a Malaysian human rights activist on the issue of sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, writes:

Malaysiakini

8:51AM Apr 27, 2014

Obama, LGBT are not political pawns

In the past two weeks, I have been invited to two meetings, one by the US Embassy and one by Human Rights Watch, in which Malaysians LGBT activists were consulted on what we would like Obama to say in support of Malaysian LGBTs.

It’s nice to be asked how we would like to be helped for a change, instead of simply being told to accept help according to the terms and conditions applied to the help.

While I appreciate the call for Obama to support the activism on sexual orientation and gender identity issues, I find myself confused by the intended outcome of such a support. How can they help, really? And who are they helping, really? (And no, I wasn’t invited to meet Obama. But with my cynicism, could you blame them, really?)

On one hand, Obama’s visit seems premised on securing better international relations. And better international relations are often the stepping-stone for better trade agreements. Better for the signers of agreements, naturally.

On the other, Obama wants to appear to his own people, and to the rest of the world, as the leader of the free world. It is easy for him to perform USA’s moral leadership globally by supporting rights issues elsewhere.

But why should Obama have the moral imperative to support local rights issues elsewhere? The US itself has not ratified major international UN treaties (not unlike Malaysia). Have we forgotten that the USA has a history of ‘fighting’ for freedoms using agent orange, napalm and drones on civilians?

It bugs me that increasingly LGBTs have become pawns in the ideological battles of the powerful. Being a gay Malaysian, I am called an enemy of religion, a traitor to my country, a threat to society.

During the meetings to listen to what local LGBT activists want Obama to say in support of the  Malaysian LGBT situation, I expressed my cynicism. I see no need for Obama to support our freedom as if the USA is the icon of freedom. East and West, North and South, we are all struggling together and learning from one another. But some of us get to determine who is developed and who isn’t.

Muslim NGOs hold protest against Obama’s visit

by austin camoens AND d. kanyakumari

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of Muslim non-governmental organisations led by the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisation (Mapim) marched from the Tabung Haji building here to the US Embassy Friday to protest President Barack Obama’s visit this weekend.

Members of various organisations spoke out against the visit during the protest which started around 2pm, saying Obama’s presence in Malaysia would be harmful to the country.

Referring to the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) Gamis representative Muhammad Afiq Awang Bakar said signing the agreement would allow the US to sue and rule the economy of Malaysia.

“Countries like Indonesia and Thailand protested against the signing and are now not bound by the agreement, hence we know that it is not compulsory.

“If we commit to this agreement, the cost of living will go up and the lives of Malaysians will be further complicated,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: US President Barack Obama offered support to Malaysia on Saturday in the baffling mystery over missing flight MH370, an official said.

Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, who is leading Malaysia’s efforts  to determine the fate of the passenger jet, said he spoke briefly with Obama  after the president’s arrival for an official visit.

“He said he knows it is a tough, long, road ahead. We’ll work together. There is always support,” Hishammuddin said.
