DBKL to discuss with cops further action over rally

Noor Adila Ali, Bernama

3:24PM Jan 1, 2014

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will discuss with police on what action to take on organisers of the illegal rally at Dataran Merdeka last night.

City Mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib said they will decide on the matter after they hold a special meeting.

“We have yet to identify what appropriate action to take… whether to sue the organiser or any other form of action,” he told Bernama in Kuala Lumpur today.

The illegal rally organised by non-governmental organisations (NGO) attended by 4,000 people had disrupted a New Year’s Eve concert by DBKL, which had to be stopped half an hour before midnight after rally participants thronged into Dataran Merdeka.

Convert to Islam, Umno veterans club tells Catholic priest in centre of Allah row

January 02, 2014

A veteran Umno leader has called on a senior Catholic priest to convert to Islam if he insisted on using the word “Allah”, saying that this will cool the rage of Muslims and comply with the Sultan of Selangor’s decree, reported Umno mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia.

Umno Veterans Club secretary Datuk Mustapha Yaakub said they are ready to hold the conversion ceremony anytime for Catholic weekly Herald editor Father Lawrence Andrew (pic).

“We are ready to hold the ceremony for his conversion to Islam anytime after he gets hidayah (guidance) from Allah.

“We will ensure that he becomes an imam (Muslim leader) and a preacher that is successful and respected,” he was quoted as saying by the Malay daily.

FACTS ALL WRONG, DR M SHOOTS AWAY at Christians, says they are being ANNOYING

KUALA LUMPUR – With Selangor religious authorities preparing to clamp down on non-Muslim’s use of “Allah”, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today questioned Christian motives for “annoying others” with their insistence on using the Arabic word to refer to God.

The former prime minister said it would not hurt Christians in the peninsula to yield on the contentious issue, claiming that the usage of the Arabic word was common only among Christians in East Malaysia but not for the minority group here in the peninsula.

“We live together at peace with each other, respect each other’s religion, but you want to do something that annoys other people,” Dr Mahathir told reporters after PPP’s New Year open house here today.

“It won’t hurt them not to use the word ‘Allah’. They’ve never used it before. Those who use it [are] Sabah and Sarawak. There is no objection, but here in the peninsula, why do we want to find a cause for quarrelling?” he added.

Umno Selangor threatens to protest over use of ‘Allah’ by non-Muslims

Umno Selangor is threatening to protest at all churches in the state on Sunday unless a senior Catholic priest apologises for insisting that Christians can use the word “Allah”, reported Umno mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia today.

Umno Gombak division chief Abdul Rahim Kamarudin said they would stage a protest if Catholic weekly Herald editor Father Lawrence Andrew does not withdraw his statement by Saturday.

“We have to be firm and cannot condone this. His actions are rude and we want him to apologise to all Muslims,” Umno Kota Raja division chief Kamaruzzaman Johari said in the Malay language daily.

Cops to probe December 31 rally-goers for illegal assembly

The Malay Mail Online

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 1 — Participants of an anti-price hike rally at Dataran Merdeka here last night will be investigated for possible violations of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012, police said today.

Dang Wangi police chief Asst Commissioner Zainuddin Ahmad also expressed his disappointment that the police force’s “patience” during the event was taken for granted by those attending the rally.

“We have tried to restrict them from disturbing Dataran Merdeka but they have rammed three barriers that we have erected,” Zainuddin told reporters late last night here.

“Police officers have worked with utmost patience from start until the end … We were using PAA, we were leaning more towards regulating,” said Zainuddin, claiming that police officers did not wish to show aggression.

Putrajaya ends 20% highway rebate ahead of possible toll rate hike

The 20% rebate for frequent users of toll highways in the Klang valley has officially come to an end. Highway officials, however, say that motorists have until June to settle their claims. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 1, 2014.

Putrajaya has ended the 20% rebate for frequent users of toll highways in the Klang Valley, but motorists have until June to claim whatever rebate that has been credited to their accounts, say highway officials.

However, the Najib administration which trumpeted the scheme at its 2009 launch as another caring government initiative has kept mum; leaving frantic motorists jamming counters to redeem the rebate yesterday.

(Malay daily Sinar Harian reported that yesterday was the last day to claim the rebate.)

“Yes it was packed in the morning. They thought today is the last day. I had to explain to them that the rebate will be stopped, but they have until June to claim it,” said a cashier at the Sungai Besi Plus toll plaza visited by The Malaysian Insider.

The cashier said they had been informed of Putrajaya’s decision to stop the rebate on Monday. ”We thought everyone knew. The news probably was published in the newspaper or television because there were lots of people who came this morning to claim the rebate,” said the cashier.

There were no notices informing motorists about the rebate being stopped.
